I've never played a Monster Hunter game before!

Seriously thinking about getting into the series. I know, I know, what have I been waiting for :)

I cannot wait for MH3 Ultimate on Wii U so I'm thinking about 'diving in' with MH3 Tri. I don't own a Wii anymore but plan to get a Wii U at launch. MH3 Tri seems like the perfect entry point into the series, but I wanted your thoughts on this. I know Wii U is backward compatible with Wii games and most accessories, so I felt that I could add to the list of great games I can play on launch day by ordering MH3 Tri for Wii from Amazon and having it arrive around Nov. 18th.

I do realize that Wii U will not improve the graphics of Wii games in any way -- So I know playing MH3 Tri on Wii U will be like playing on a standard Wii.

So, is anyone else in the same boat as me, never played any game in the series before? Don't own a Wii but plan on getting a Wii U? Thinking about getting MH3 Tri?

This game looks so badass

Thanks in advance for any replies on this topic.

It's perhaps the most solid title in the series in terms of learning curve.

But I would suggest waiting for Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. It has more to offer, and from what I've heard, bowguns aren't an ass to configure like they were in Tri.

You also said you don't own a Wii anymore, which leads one to think you no longer have the peripherals for it. You need a Wiimote + Nunchuk at the very least to play the game, but a CCPro is recommended. If you don't have these, then you'll end up paying even more money, which is probably more reason to wait for the Wii U version.

When is Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate due to arrive on Wii U in the U.S.?

Also what about Monster Hunter for 3DS?

I don't know when they are due, but they are both to be called Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and apparently have a cross-compatibility of some form.

One of the creators said March 2013 I believe during the Nintendo Direct. Whether that means Japan or not I'm not 100% sure, but it was in the English broadcasts.

I think March or something, It's a launch title in Japan (bundled instead of Nintendoland). I'll get both versions, 3DS and Wii U and I've never played em before.

Alright now I'm kinda confused. Lets see if I can work this out.

According to IGN, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is already out for 3DS in Japan. Apparently it arrives in the west in March 2013. However there is also Monster Hunter 4 for 3DS, which hits Japan in March 2013. It has no release date in the west. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for Wii U will arrive in Japan for launch on December 8 and March 2013 in the west.

I probably got that all messed up and will have to edit this post later.

Edit: LOL, the more I look into what MH games are on (or to be released) what platforms, the more confused I get!

Okay the eikipedia page should clear things up

MH3 Ultimate atleast must be the same game in HD, but more improvements except the resolution its very unlikely, like DQX, anyways we must see some footage before deciding

but the best thing about this game is to play Online with people hunting big monsters : D

wil be realeased in march 2013 in america and europe i think, Japan will have a M3U bundle with the premium wii u but its exclusive only for japan and they will have it in december

Just thought I would post this although I'm sure you figured it out already!

Monster Hunter 3G ((3DS) known as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate outside of Japan) Is already out in Japan and slated for March 2013 for the rest of the world.
Monster Hunter 4 (3DS) Is March 2013 for Japan with no announcement for the rest of the world.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U) Is a launch title for Japan and slated for March 2013 for the rest of the world.

I would just wait, I'm sure quite a few members here are getting the Wii U version, so that would give you that many more people to play with online (if that's your cup of tea). :)

I'd also opt to just wait - While Tri is a great game - MH3U is an HD overhaul of it with tons more content. March may seem like a long time from now - but with all the great games coming out at launch and beyond..they should be enough to keep you busy until then!

Also to be noted that the online service for tri will likely end when tri ultimate comes out...Though by then you could just get tri ultimate.

Definitely wait for Ultimate. It is also going to have a crossplay component with the 3DS version. If you are really liking the game you can pick it up on 3DS also, and continue your adventure from your Wii U save point for some on the go hunting.
Currently playing: AC 3, ZombiU, BLOPS 2, Nintendoland, NSMBU, Nano Assault Neo, Halo 4, Darksiders 2, and Far Cry 3

From Famitsu:

NEWS

Monster Hunter 3G HD Ver. will launch with the WiiU on December 8th. Features include full 1080p display, 5.1 LPCM surround sound, a WiiU pad display based on the 3DS display, and internet multiplay. Local play works with up to three 3DSes, and a free eShop app will handle moving save data between the two.
