On my ps3 I can stream movies etc from External hard drive I have plugged into my router.
The ps3 doesn't play MKV and some other files..I was wondering whether the wii U has a media server and also whether it will play the like of MKVs??

Nintendo consoles won't even play DVDs. No chance they have media server support.

I would hope so since all other consoles do and I think the wii had netflex capabilities if I remember correctly

Doubt it from Nintendo themselves, but a third party might do something.
