I don't think that graphics and audio should have made it worse as it is mainly opinionated and also that is a very small portion of what matters in games. What matters is gameplay, and he had no complaints with that.I feel like the score should've been harsher since he complained about the graphics and audio.

But 9.1 is a very high score for a game he says just manages to look better than the game on the previous generation, and the same music.I don't think that graphics and audio should have made it worse as it is mainly opinionated and also that is a very small portion of what matters in games. I'd give it a 7.

I'd give it a 7.
He actually says:
"This isn't a bad looking game by any means,..., the problem is that Mario U does just enough to reach an HD threshold, and then it stops. There's no mistaking this is a step up from the New Mario Series and it's a fair deal better looking that that last entry on the Wii"
The only other issues he has with the game is very minor multiplayer issues, though the way he speaks about it, I think multiple sessions with the same people could eventually become extremely fun, it just has a steeper learning curve than the rest of the game. He praises everything else.
All of these complaints are very minor issues in a game of this genre. Dropping 3 points for visuals and audio sounds harsh and leaves little value left for presentation, gameplay, longevity and story (lol).
If the game had been released with the same graphics as Super Mario World, it could still get a 9.1 in my opinion.
Also, you'd give it a 7 based on what he says about the game or what you have seen about it? I'm assuming you've not played the full game to completion yet.

I'm the number one mario 2d fan. Also, you'd give it a 7 based on what he says about the game or what you have seen about it? I'm assuming you've not played the full game to completion yet.
They're not getting any better since the Wii version.
Therefore, with new hardware and 3 years, I'd lower the score.
I'm basing my score on what he said.
Subtracting what he says against his actual score.
I think he's a chicken. NSMBU has been getting 70's and 80's.
After we all saw NSMB2 we got alarm bells in our heads which said: Don't let them get lazy, push them to actually try.

fair enough,
I've not actually played any 2d mario's since Super Mario World I think or even followed any of them. Its the first 2D mario i've been interested in for a long time, so all the changes made appear a lot bigger to me than they might be.

9.1 is very high, but based on his review it deserved it. I guess our interpretation of what he said, and how much we believe it affects the game is totally different. I'm saying that with him saying that the graphics do not look bad by any means but just aren't as powerful as they could be is very superficial. If an 8-bit styled game was released they would not criticize it to a very low score for having a different visual style. The music is a slight bigger problem, but one that doesn't affect the overall game. If the graphics looked legitimately awful and the music was ear-bleeding then yes, I think it should detract from the game. But it is not, and all of these portions of the game are great. If you never played a New Super Mario Bros. game before, you wouldn't notice any of this. If you have, then it makes you slightly disappointed but you quickly get over it due to the amazingly good gameplay. But 9.1 is a very high score for a game he says just manages to look better than the game on the previous generation, and the same music.
I'd give it a 7.
What I'm trying to say is that his problems were that things were not better, they were not bad. In fact it was good, but he wanted them to be better.
