According to reports, it’s possible to update the Wii U and use the system at the same time. All you have to do is, when prompted to update the system, select the “Cancel” option. It will still download in the background, then prompt you when it’s ready to install. You’ll be able to use the system in the mean time though.
If you’ve already updated your system, then keep it in mind for the future.
