I will be getting my Wii U this evening but thought of something now that I can't find the answer for.  Most everything I have seen says you have to use licensed headsets with the gamepad.  Has anyone used regular stereo headphones and does it work fine?  What about regular stereo headphones with a mic for black ops 2 or mass effect 3?

I can say, fo'sho, that regular stereo headphones work on the gamepad. Not sure about headsets, though.

Regular headphones do work on the Gamepad. I use them at night when I play Mario without the TV being on. Or I will just mute the TV and use headphones for no noise. But yeah they do work.

Hey, Mangina. Gratz on your Wii U.

To answer the mic questions, a guy on Youtube was able to use headphones with mic and he was able to voice chat with the mic on those headphones. Which means you don't need an uber expensive headset.

Great that's what I was looking for. I have an expensive headset I just cant hear anything else going on in the room so I wanted to be able to use some basic in ear headphones with a mic so I can still hear whats going on sometimes.

Ppl have been saying in the black ops 2 miiverse that you can connect your iPhone or android earbuds and it will initiate the mic within the gamepad

Aparantly you can use any crappy headphones you want and as long as they are plugged in you can use the gamepad mic as a mic for online voice chat.

Yes, anything with an audio jack will work. Thank you Nintendo for saving my pocket some money.

My headset has two cables: one for the audio and one for the mic
Can I plug one cable and use both audio and mic?

Okay, I bought the Turtle Beach N11's from Best Buy but the sound is just waaaay too low (gamepad volume and headset volume both all the way up). I really only want to use the headset for gaming on the gamepad only or a multi-player game, does anyone have a recommendation of a decent headset that will give me the great sound like my Turtle Beach X12's I use on my computer? Just about sick of not being able to hear anything with this headset and will return them for a different pair.

For headsets with a separate audio and mic jack, you can get a converter. Something along these lines:

http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-MUYHSMFF-Headset-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B004SP0WAQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1354011766&sr=8-2&keywords=mic+jack+to+audio

If you have the nicer high end headphones with the interchangeable cord (found in Aerial7s and such), most come with this converter, so check your packaging.
