Why do digital games cost as much as the versions available at retail?

Digital games on the Wii U and 3DS cost as much as their retail counterparts. The only exceptions are from third-parties, and even then, the price difference is minimal. Why is this? Unfortunately, this is all Nintendo’s customer service had to say:

…at this time we do not have any information as to why this decision may have been made, nor have their been any announcements to suggest that the price of the games may be reduced in the future. I know you were hoping for more information, and I appreciate your understanding.

I’d suspect the real answer though is that retailers still have too much power. Nintendo can’t afford to irritate the businesses that stock their titles by under-cutting them with more affordable versions via the eShop. But that’ll change in time. Retailers won’t maintain their power forever.
