My headset doesn't work with my wii u right now because it is usb powered but has 3.5mm mic and sound.
Can you just use a usb mic with the wii u? I noticed most of the mics for the wii u plug into the gamepad, which i dont want because i would use my headset for pc too and don't want to buy an adapter, also when i plug headphone into the gamepad only gamepad sound comes out of it.

also would this mic in theory work?

Most likely your current mic or that mic would not be supported via USB. Due to how the mics are usually designed to pickup on Plug and Play drivers built into the OS. If not that a lot of headsets are even designed to work with custom drivers only. Being as this is a console OS and it being a closed environment it is 99% likely to no work in most all cases. (Also, as far as the gamepads jack any mic should work in it).

Them a major problem is the Wii U supports mics via USB & the 3.5 jack based off the game itself. This is going to be an annoying and rocky road ahead of us. "Pull out mic via USB for X game & insert 3.5mm jack plug and vise versa".

In all honesty you should probably just check out the mics either labeled as Wii U supported and/or get feedback from users on each mic.
http://www.gamestop....-headset/103048 (USB wireless dongle & 3.5mm support)
http://store.gamesha...?idCategory=467 (Mad Katz/GameShark store might need change of location | 3.5mm support)
http://www.turtlebea...adsets/nintendo (Both Turtle Beach mics 3.5mm support)

A few headsets that are branded Nintendo, now just for you to find possible reviews on each. Then here is hoping Nintendo does not later release a mic that is supported only by two games, similar to the Wii. (shrugs) Always another way to take out of your pocket. <_<

Edit: I can not really add any input on either of those mics as of yet. I also own no games that support the mic functionality at the moment. Though, from my experience with the Wii your looking for a headache. It will be supported by few and questionable if the price of the mics outweigh the usage you're going to get out of them. Anyway, I do plan on purchasing some of those PDP mics later down the line for the option of both wireless & the 3.5 option. If I had them now I could only review them for you.

In theory it should work as your using the given 3.5mm jack. Worst thing when coming down to phone/media plug style connectors is how the device utilize the rings on the plug. There is two standards that most mobile devices use TRS & TRRS (FYI T= Tip, R= Ring, & S= Sleeve). Which are not really compatible electrically speaking, as they can have different amount of rings and how it is overall wired. You could run into the mic not working, not getting stereo sound & only mono, no sound but mic support only, or sound only and no mic support. This day and age though smart phones are more TRRS and a bit more compatible with stereo devices using the standard 3.5mm so hopefully Nintendo is similar to smartphones. I personally can not say as I have not tested any headsets as of yet (No games with mic support). Then another problem is what the game will utilize as supported for talking via USB or 3.5mm jack. Hopefully 3.5 will always be a must in the games due to it being built into the gamepad. Yet whom is to say with these crazy developers. (Shrug)

Edit: This is sort of why I suggested you stick with a branded Nintendo mic. Then just go off reviews to see what is what. At least these should be wired right, though you could try some adapters if they do not work by default. They make them for turning TRRS to TRS (Stereo) + TRS (mic).
