I have my Wii U connected directly into my receiver yamaha rx-v373 and then from receiver to television, I have set in the Wii U sound options to surround and when I do a sound test it only seems to be outputting to the front left, front right and rear right speakers the other channels are silent, now I know for a fact my receiver supports PCM 2ch through to 8ch so not my equipment at all. So far had no luck getting 5.1 audio from my setup.

I have nano assault neo, zombi u and nintendoland but nothing I try is working, any advice please?

i think the games are just stereo, i know Super Mario Land is, i have NintendoLand & also Zombi U, you should get surround sound with all games but i do not think you will get 5.1 like you do on X360/PS3 the games on these systems are encoded with Dolby Digital (X360) & DTS (PS3) the Wii U doesn't support this it is just loss-less audio & your amp will just say multi-channel on the display, but i think it is dependent on the actual game on the audio, so you might just get 4.0 surround.

Already looked at the thread before posting, I just don't understand why only seems to be sound coming from the front left, front right and rear right speakers when I do a sample test from the Wii u sound menu though.

Sometimes I wish I had a sound system, but then I remember almost no games actually support it.

The odd part is the single rear speaker. I could understand just the fronts cause that would mean the receiver is just outputting stereo but the single rear means there is something strange going on.

If i set stereo in the wii tv sound options menu i get front left and right output plus sw output as expected but when selecting surround itdisplays on my receiver as using all 5 channels plus sw but when running the sample test the centre and rear left speaker output nothing im at a loss as to what to do could the hdmi cable with the wii u be at fault? If i call up audio input info for the sound it displays pcm 3/2/1 0.1 but no outputting to all channels its really annoying me now.

That depends which consoles you own. All PS3 and Xbox 360 games support surround sound and on the PS3 in some cases in 7.1.

Really? I never knew that. It's interesting to know.

Yes they all support at least 5.1 and quite a few PS3 games also support the far superior DTS as opposed to just Dolby Digital. On the PS3 this is possible as the blueray discs can hold up to 50GB of data.

Urrrggggggg so many sound problem threads, can we just get one pinned, along with one pinned thread each for all the Wii U's problems, it would help a lot.

Anyone else had a similar problem? even though my receiever displays 5.1 audio operating the sample sound test from within the wii u menu has missing tones.

Just so everyone knows my ps3, xbox 360 and bluray player all output sound to my receiver via Hdmi then the picture is outputted to the television via the same Hdmi cable and they all work perfectly and utilise all the audio channels so my speakers and receiver is setup properly, but not getting 5.1 audio from the Wii U using PCM and my receiver supports up to 8 channels for PCM. This is really starting to piss me off now everything else works fine but not this bloody console :/

Just a quick update I have unplugged absolutely everything from my reciever, bought 2 brand new Hdmi cables and connected the Wii U directly to reciever and then to the TV and still doesnt work correctly, front left, front right, sw and rear right work fine, silence from centre and rear left speakers, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr lol

help me obi-wan kenobi you really do seem to be my only hope :(

Go into the system setting in the Wii U main menu, then move across to the green TV icon, go into that & then scroll down then click on the TV output type as Surround.

I have a compatible amp connected with HDMI & i get 5.1 sound from my Wii U

You will also in the main settings menu have to go to the Gamepad settings the yellow one & change the sound setting to surround to.
