Sometimes I wish I had a sound system, but then I remember almost no games actually support it.
That depends which consoles you own. All PS3 and Xbox 360 games support surround sound and on the PS3 in some cases in 7.1.

Really? I never knew that. It's interesting to know.
Yes they all support at least 5.1 and quite a few PS3 games also support the far superior DTS as opposed to just Dolby Digital. On the PS3 this is possible as the blueray discs can hold up to 50GB of data.

Just so everyone knows my ps3, xbox 360 and bluray player all output sound to my receiver via Hdmi then the picture is outputted to the television via the same Hdmi cable and they all work perfectly and utilise all the audio channels so my speakers and receiver is setup properly, but not getting 5.1 audio from the Wii U using PCM and my receiver supports up to 8 channels for PCM. This is really starting to piss me off now everything else works fine but not this bloody console :/
Just a quick update I have unplugged absolutely everything from my reciever, bought 2 brand new Hdmi cables and connected the Wii U directly to reciever and then to the TV and still doesnt work correctly, front left, front right, sw and rear right work fine, silence from centre and rear left speakers, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr lol
help me obi-wan kenobi you really do seem to be my only hope

I have a compatible amp connected with HDMI & i get 5.1 sound from my Wii U
You will also in the main settings menu have to go to the Gamepad settings the yellow one & change the sound setting to surround to.

Go into the system setting in the Wii U main menu, then move across to the green TV icon, go into that & then scroll down then click on the TV output type as Surround.
