Nintendo has released a statement concerning the Wii U eShop's adult content block.

Last week, it was revealed that Nintendo had blocked the sale of adult-rated content on its eShop until after 11pm.

Nintendo has since confirmed that the sale of mature content has been restricted to comply with German law.

"At Nintendo we always aim to provide a safe gaming experience for fans of all ages and ensure that we comply with applicable legal age restriction requirements across Europe," reads a Nintendo statement.

"Legal age restriction requirements vary across a number of European countries. Since Nintendo of Europe is based in Germany, Nintendo eShop is complying with German youth protection regulation, which therefore applies to all our European markets.

"Under German law, content rated 18+ must be made available only at night.

"Therefore the accessibility of 18+ content in Nintendo eShop is limited to [USK: 22:00 UTC until 4:00 UTC] [PEGI: 23:00 UTC until 3:00 UTC]."

Users attempting to buy restricted content on systems on which no parental controls have been set are met with a message informing them of the block, reading: "You cannot view this content. The times during which this content can be viewed have been restricted."

thats ridicules... One of the most barbarian civilizations, till the 15th.. now restrict adult content in EU? ... I will send a complain letter to Nintendo, about these primitives.

They must add parental controls... to saw or NOT to saw content... And as far as I know, nintendo is not posting porno content in their e-shop.

You don't even own a Wii U because it's too expensive.

old news.

I hate it. I'm an adult.

I'm glad I live in the US. Way to appeal to core gamers Nintendo! They should just move the headquarters :) I guess they expect people to get up in the middle of the night to download anything huh. They should at least add a feature that will run the download at the set time frame.

This is Nintendo being far too over protective for then own good as usual. How they expect to compete against Sony and Microsoft with such ridiculous and arcane policies is beyond me. Fortunately for me my Wii U is not my primary console so I'm not too bothered but its still unacceptable for them to place such a restriction. If they want to restrict German consumers then so be it but to penalise consumers in the rest of Europe is just ridiculous. Just because their EU HQ is in Germany shouldn't mean that have to enforce German law on the rest of the EU.

They may say they aren't but they are. They're competing for the same purchasing dollars/pounds/euros.

It's not referring to adult rated games as you put it but games that are rated 18 like Zombi U, Ninja Gaiden 3, Assassin's Creed 3, Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 and Mass Effect 3. There will probably be more like that in the future.

Gha!

Seems very odd that he Wii U account used to access the store is restricted by time, despite the lengths gone to, to set up parental accounts/controls on the device (yes, the account used is a verified adult :-)) - a German law encroaching into the whole of the EU domain - very, very bad Nintendo.

Although I suspect Nintendo tried to make this work and Germany has not sanctioned the OS controls yet. But to make it a restriction for the whole of the EU just because of Germany is a great way to alienate many users. Who knows the details, but its a real great way to hit online sales, and not in a good way.

So it seems there is currently no way to access restricted (eg ZombiU) eStore content prior to 23:00 hrs (changing the console time doesn't help - I tried :-().

This is very poor, but smacks of a general impression I've got from the Wii U, having had it for a day now, it's just not finished. The OS UI is very slow, and clunky (eg no progress bar / spinning icon during load screens to let you know your console hasn't crashed).

Nintendo have pushed to get to market before the likes of MS & Sony, to grab as much market share as possible. During the time between now and the 'real' Wii U go-live (ie when Zelda is out), they'll use this time & user feedback to polish the products OS. However, I think the quality/completeness bar was just too low.

Nintendo - please sort this and other usability issues quick or you are likely to really lose your hard core fans to IOS.

Why can't they only restrict adult content if parental controls are switched on?
