so i just synced my wiimote to play with my gamepad so me and my gf can play. i was gonna play on the gamepad and her on the wiimote, but for some reason, this does not seem possible? I tried using boost mode and its telling me I need to connect another wiimote.. Anyone know why or am i doing something wrong?

I think if you're playing in the story mode of the game, you need to select a add player option on the pause screen when you're on the world map. But if you already did that and can't seem to get the remote working. I'd say use new batteries or resync the controller.

You can't play multiplayer using the gamepad and wiimote. If it's multiplayer, it has to be where everyone uses a Wiimote. The gamepad only works in single player. Trust me, I had this same question and came to this conclusion... :<

Very stupid decision. Just a way to get you to buy yet another Wii controller.

I just made a thread asking this question. I should have read down a bit further. This is a very stupid decision. Why can't we just use the game pad to play? Why are we limited to placing blocks?

I hope they patch this.

Edit- And what's this? You can't use a pro-controller either? WHY? Who is making these stupid decisions? So, in order to play with Mario and Luigi at once I have to have two Wiimotes? WHY CAN'T I JUST USE THE DAMN PAD?

I wouldn't hold out for a patch as this is the way Nintendo seems to have intended the game to be played. The Gamepad can only be used to play the game in the normal way in single player. In multiplayer you have to use Wii remotes as the Gamepad can only be used by an additional player to place blocks to help or hinder. I do agree it seems ridiculous and doesn't make sense why they didn't implement the pro controller as an option. My only guess is that they wanted to keep it consistent and not give any player an advantage.

quick question: one of the selling points I had with my kids for the wii u was seeign the Mario game where one is playing, and the other can use the gamepad to help (or hurt! haha) out the 1st player by placing blocks, etc. Is that considered a "multiplayer" game? so if my son is playing a single player game, and saves on world 3 for example, and then the next time he continues and my daughter wants to help him out with the gamepad, can they do that? or do they have to start a new save file in multiplayer and use THAT one to continue when they want to play together?

it is so confusing! things were so much easier back in 1986!!!
