They also have a quicksave function which allows you to save anywhere, but you need to remember to save every time you play as it's deleted once you select it again.
Gameovers would usually result in starting the current world over as that would be the last save.

Is this right, my boy plays for half an hour on the first few levels, loses his lives on the boss level and has to start all over? I'm doing something wrong aren't I?
He has to beat a fortress/castle to save. Why don't U help him? Get the gamepad and let him play with the Wiimote and help him out

so, i would have to play through the entire game for it to not loose my world progress? i completed acorn world and whatever the next one is called it started me all over at the first world. did them again and did quick save. went back in and it started me at the beginning again. i don't have hours to play, nor would i want to. i'm not concerned about progress within a world, just the ones i've completed.

As has been said, you can only save after each miniboss. So if you're low on lives, and have done a lot of progress worth saving that you don't want to lose, you can go back to the first castle and finish it again to save your progress.

Easy... Hit (+) then "Quick save".
Or like the others have said beat a fortress or castle and hit "save".

Yeah it's a little funky how the saving works. To get a reliable save you have to beat a castle or fortress. I believe ghost houses save as well. Quick save only works once so if you load it and then exit again without saving I believe you lose it. But it's better than prior mario games where bottom line you could only save after beating a boss.
