Ok I've seen the answer you are not able to use game pad for play until, the 5th player.
Do you have to have it turned on the whole time! As you're not using it?

I believe there is an option in the settings to turn the display off.

If you go onto gamepad settings on the home menu screen there is an option to turn the gamepad display off.

Yes, the upad remains on constantly.
The best you can do is save the grunt of power by turning off the display as above.
Some people believe it to be a problem.
I don't really agree, but I can see it'd be as easy as having an option in the controller menu or a button on the upad, so you can't really argue for it.
Some people have issues with the upad remaining on constantly while watching netflix.
Justifiable.
