Can i just plug a usb mem stick in and play a movie thats in avi format on my WiiU like on the 360? asking as some of the HD formats seem to make the 360 struggle from time to time or won't play as all, so i thought seeing as the WiiU is a better/newer console i should use that.
Or should/could i use a server program to stream video like Vuze?

You can't use a flash drive or a SD card to play video/media.
I guess you could use a server program if the media is HTML5.

Is this just because Nintendo have not done a software patch/update to allow usb playback? I understand its a new console so stuffs still being sorted for it but i do expect it to do what the older ones do when the updates get done.
Going to try streaming to it in a bit.

The Wii U doesn't have any media player, except the browser's html5 player.
You can stream mp4 videos from a computer (or your android with the right apps)
www.vidiiustreamer.com
Doesn't really work that well yet though.
