to the coastland
So,

#4556 I think there's a handheld better then the 3DS.

But back to the original question I'm surprised that so many people aren't really convinced about the PSV.
Should you be? This is a Nintendo forum, so it's full of blind Nintendo fanboys!
But, seriously, it's like the "PSP vs DS" debate. Better graphics and better tech don't always make a better system. Back when the PSP debuted in E3 2004, Sony's first handheld dwarfed the DS. Other than having Dreamcast/PS2-level graphics, it had all sorts of options and multimedia features that hardcore gamers salivated over, while the DS just had a touch screen. However, thanks to Nintendo's marketing and the games, the DS became a huge success in spite of all of the PSP's functions. While the multimedia features were impressive, it also became a detriment, at least to me, because when the handheld launched, I saw more UMD movies than games. The PSP became paperweight until great titles like Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and God of War: Chains of Olympus saved it from heading to the buyback. Overall, I felt the PSP was a great handheld.
I hope the same goes for Vita, but the handheld didn't surprise me all that much. The PSP did things that wasn't imagined in handheld gaming, while the Vita is everything that I expected it to be. It displays better graphics, supports better online, and incorporates touch controls. So far, only 40 titles have been confirmed, and only handful of them appeal to me, so I don't plan on plopping down $300+ for this at launch. The same went for the 3DS.

#4536 Could the Wii 2 be outdated soon?

I'm sure it could but it would have to be with low settings, lol.
I was impressed with the background but something about the bird just seemed off...idk what it is.
Anyways, that was a tech demo, not representative of graphics during actual gameplay.
Remember the Quantic Dream's tech demo for the PS3 that had everyone's jaws dropping to the floor? Well it took Quantic Dreams 4 years to actually to be able to make a game with those visuals (Heavy Rain) and even then it wasn't on par with that original tech demo...and to even get close to it, the entire game had to be done in QT events.
Other than Heavy Rain, no game has even come close to what they showed off in that Tech Demo for the PS3 and we're well into the systems life cycle...if games were going to be able to do it, they'd have done it already.
It's entirely possible (if not likely) that it'll be the same for the Wii U with it's tech demo's.
Not that it would be a bad thing, it's still a MAJOR step up from the original Wii and short of people who made the massive mistake of actually buying into all the b/s pre-reveal hype no one expected a modern day graphical powerhouse from Nintendo.
I'm not against Nintendo, I love me some Zelda, Mario, DK and Kirby. I'm against people who try to irrationally overrate products or features of products.
You have to look at Nintendo's attitude regarding tech demos and general tech specs. Really the reason Nintendo stopped releasing technical specs regarding its systems is what happened with GameCube. Sony and Microsoft give the media fluffed specs regarding their consoles, which simply wasn't possible in a full game setting. Nintendo on the other hand were more honest and openly discussed the capabilities of the GameCube and the whole situation soured on them. This isn't Sony or Microsoft where consistently you can expect them to show case a tech demo simply not possible on the hardware in a game. Nintendo's tech demos for certain franchises for instance often end up not quite as impressive as the finished product and it wouldn't be like Nintendo to show case a demo that didn't represent what the console is truly capable of pulling off.
#4463 Wii U Graphical Demo in case you missed it.

My impression is that its graphics capabilities are not far beyond the current competition. That is probably plenty enough power anyway, but at the same time they don't want to reveal specs because people would judge the system on the fact that the specs are similar to five year old products, despite that you shouldn't.
We're rapidly approaching a threshold where graphics across the board are going to be impressive and they simply won't matter anymore. There will still be improvements, but they won't be defining systems like they were a decade ago, when everybody was debating what system had the best capabilities.
The industry in the modern era is about marketing, software, and services. Hardware matters more in form than raw tech specs.
What's most important about Wii U on the technical side is its architecture. Work on the system to an extent carries over from the current generation. Don't expect visuals of Wii games to get much better than you see in their first year. Developers already know how to achieve results with the hardware because they've worked on the Xbox 360 for years. Of course they aren't identical, but they're going to find all the ins/out/tricks a lot faster this time.
Your impression is quite off then. Both demos to some degree showcased effects simply impossible to replicate with current generation consoles. That's without mentioning that both demos where running at 1080p native resolution in real time while pulling off Global Illumination, high quality textures, and ext. Literally only a few PC games on their highest settings can do some of the things being done in both demos. The more impressive demo the Japanese Garden Demo is specifically stated as being based on an older version of the hardware and Zelda tech demos always are worse than the final product. Their choice regarding the demos perhaps wasn't the best. It would of helped get the capabilities of the console around to specific crowds of individuals if one demo had been a realistic urban setting (a FPS ext). We've more or less already meet the threshold where most individuals have a hard time telling several of the current improvements in graphics compared to the capabilities of the current consoles. That has a lot to do with the fact majority of it is very subtle and that no developer has really embraced tessellation. What improvements can be seen for next generation consoles also really need to be seen in person or the original video files as recordings lose quite a bit of detail.
#4333 New Controller Limitations?
Posted by Aaron Barton
on 08 June 2011 - 03:08 AM
Miyamoto: Right now I'm planning that people can still be able to use their Wii Remote controllers that they already have, which means this time you now have five controllers to play with. Iwata: You mean this new controller, and four Wii Remote Plus controllers for a total of five. Miyamoto: Right. Five controllers. And we have people play in many combinations.
They don't exactly confirm it either way, but I don't like the sound of it.
Consider that the Wii-U console needs to process the video for each screen to be transmitted wirelessly, and you see just how dangerous it is that they allow only one Wii-U controller for processing or wireless bandwidth limitations. Not to mention cost limitations, as it's clear that this would run higher than your typical 360 pad. They may have designed this whole setup so that they don't really expect you to have any more Wii-U controllers than the one it comes with.
If this is the case, I'm extremely disappointed. You couldn't even make the four swords concept work on this system as it existed on Gamecube. All of the obvious applications such as having your plays in a football game on your personal screen are suddenly a lot more gimmicky. It's not going to keep anything secret in multiplayer -it's just going to clean up the TV interface.
I need confirmations before jumping the gun, but I'M NERVOUS.

LittleBigPlanet is indeed owned by Sony, so we'll probably never see it on a Nintendo console.
Sony/Nintendo IP trading system..yep.that's what we need. Nintendo gets to build a LBP, GOW and Resistance..Sony gets to build a Mario, Zelda and Kirby....
Rights are still owned by the current owners but they agree to let each other build one game from each series
....that would be so awesome...why can't companies be cool enough to do something like that?

#90 NES Vs. SNES

Sentiment aside, though, NES games are a bit too arbitrary and indirect. I know it's fun to explore a game like the original Legend of Zelda or Metroid, but I feel the partial guiding and other improvements to the sequel and prequel (LttP) made them feel more present and allowed me to have a better time playing them. I also enjoy marveling at the graphical achievments of this device, trying to remind myself this was the system right after the NES. Plus, I'm a music guy and find so much to love about what's been done with that Sony sound card.

Last but not least, I'm pretty sure that EVERYONE who played Okami(den) loves this guy here:
Issun from Okami

He wasn't really important in Okamiden, but he's one of the funniest characters in Okami by far. His comments are epic

#3769 Super Smash Bros. 4 Discussion Thread
Posted by Limelight788
on 03 June 2011 - 04:39 PM
The Super Smash Bros. series has always been great games, including the last installment and some people, singlehandedly prevents their Wii from being taken to the next store, it's that great. Super Smash Bros. Brawl may have made a few major errors (Eg. the terrible online system), but it succeed in providing a great experience overall.
If Nintendo learns from their mistakes and improve upon what they do best, the next installment will be even better then before. I will be all over it and will be buying it at all cost. So expect me to be talking about it for a long, long time.
I think that we'll see announcements regarding it in E3 2011 and if not, it will eventually come.
Let's go through all the posts first:
@Sirralart RCP120 (#8): I wouldn't mind a few more third-party characters, but in the end, as Feld0 said, this is mainly for a celebration of Nintendo's titles and games and I'd like to keep it that way. Street Fighter already have their own series, so they aren't really a good start for Capcom's characters in Super Smash Bros.
@Wertville (#14): Final Fantasy's characters are unlikely to be represented, especially considering that they went a whole generation disregarding Nintendo's platform. Plus the main games have not originated on Nintendo platforms since since March, 1994 if you consider it where Final Fantasy VI was first released. Good luck with getting any Square Enix's characters in the fourth installment.
Well that was quick, now to propose my idea for the next installment. Gotta get that done quick before the new installment spoils some of it for me.
My Ideas for Super Smash Bros. 4:
The Character Roster
* by the character name indicates unlockable players.
Mario:
Mario
Luigi
Peach
Bowser
Bowser Jr.*
Paper Mario*
Donkey Kong:
Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
King K. Rool*
Other Mario Subseries:
Yoshi
Wario (Alternate costume same as previous game)
The Legend of Zelda:
Link
Zelda
Ganondorf*
Young Link* (Alternate costume is Toon Link)
Unknown*
Metroid:
Samus (Same alternate as before)
Ridley*
Kirby:
Kirby
Meta Knight
King Dedede
Gooey*
Star Fox:
Fox
Falco*
Wolf*
Krystal*
Pokemon:
Pikachu
Jigglypuff
Pokemon Trainer
Mewtwo*
5th Gen Pokemon Character*
F-Zero:
Captain Falcon
Samurai Gorah*
Earthbound:
Ness
Lucas*
Fire Emblem:
Ike
Marth*
Michaich*
Kid Icarus:
Pit
Pikimin:
Olimar
Golden Sun:
Issac*
Custom Robo:
Ray MK II*
Retro:
Ice Climbers
R.O.B.*
Balloon Fighter*
Mr. Game & Watch*
Third-Party:
Snake* (Representing Konami)
Sonic* (Representing Sega)
Mega Man* (Representing Capcom)
Bomberman* (Representing Hudson Soft)
Explanation (And a lot of it):
First thing we should do is to keep our expectation low. This is personally a roster I think would do great and a very satisfying one, but I have a feeling that the roster could go down to as much as 43 characters, as any of these listed could be easily omitted. That said, it will be higher then 35 characters, count on that. I expect the player roster to be anywhere between 43 and 56 characters, so a lot to work with, so my rosters works at a realistic wish list that I hope is taken into consideration.
Some of these are more or less merely suggestions from other players.
I think it's plausible to assume that all or some of the original unlockable characters will be made available from the start. Captain Falcon will almost certainly be in, so if F-zero gets a second representive, then someone should take his place an an unlockable character. I just think he makes more sense as a starter then an unlockable. Same with Ness on the latter reason, thought he should be playable from the start as well since he's more well known then Lucas. I'd be fine with Jigglypuff and Luigi being unlockable, but again, prefer them as starters.
I removed Lucario because he did not originate in a video game and as such, is the least likely out of all Brawl characters to come back; yes even less then the clone characters and third-party characters. Do some research and you'll see that he originated in an anime Pokemon movie. The rule states that no character that does not originate in a video game may make an appearance. By including Lucario, they are contradicting this rule. He may be a video game character, but he does not have video game origin. Mark my words, when the developers figure out this, he will be removed instantly with possibly no reference to him in the game. It's not something I want, but something we'll probably have to deal with.
I'm not sure if we'll get third-party characters in the game, but I'll say it's very likely that we'll see them anyway. Snake and Sonic will probably be back since Konami and Sega are producing games with both characters on Nintendo platform and Sega has remained as a consistent supporter of Nintendo. As for representatives from different companies, Capcom and Hudson Soft are the most likely since they've been regarded as Nintendo's strongest supporters throughout the years and many games they make land on Nintendo's platform. I choose Mega Man because he represents the feeling of a Nintendo character very well compared to potential third-party characters, he is the most requested 3rd party character not in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and that the majority of his games have appeared on Nintendo platform. Same with Bomberman, except that he isn't as requested, although still pretty wanted. This is, however, the part that I care the least about. As awesome as it would be to play with Snake and Sonic again and as awesome it would be to play with Mega Man and Bomberman, if they have to drop anything, this is unfortunately the place to do it as it is harder to keep third-party characters in then Nintendo characters. We'll get anything from nothing to four third-party characters here.
Now if we get all of the four playable third-party characters, either all of them should be unlockable or have just one starter. Obviously, it won't be Bomberman, but any of Solid Snake, Sonic, or Mega Man would be the possible starter. Of those, I lean towards Snake as he is the first third-party character in Brawl.
One thing I do not wish to see are non-video game characters making an appearance, mainly because there's no need to and it destroy the purpose of the series, to play with Nintendo characters. It's impossible anyway since it is clearly stated that only video game character can make an appearance and they must originate in a video game. You could argue that anime characters could get in since Lucario is in, but he technically did not originate in a video game, so as said before, expect him to not make an appearance as a playable character in the next installment. That said, if Lucario stays in the game, then that opens a new possibilities of playable characters of mainly video game characters that appeared in a different format. Obviously, Goku and Naruto stands zero chance, but a few more characters could get in, so I'm kind of hoping video game characters with different origins don't get kicked out.

"The Science Ministry announced late on Friday highly radioactive materials were detected in a 300-km north-south stretch from Kesennuma in Miyagi Prefecture to Choshi in Chiba Prefecture, the Kyodo news agency reported."
One city huh? As I said before, the Nuclear Disaster is MUCH worse than the West is reporting, it never stopped and is still ongoing (another explosion was heard near reactor 4 as recent as yesterday). Not to mention the fact that Typhoon season is upon us and Fukushima is prone to getting hit which will only hinder efforts to get things under control. Because of the fact that radioactive material is so light and travels so easily through the air, there is no such thing as "only one city" being affected by a nuclear disaster like this.
EDIT:
By the way that quote is in reference to this past Friday (May, 27th). Not a quote taken earlier in the crisis.
I think you're overreacting to the size of the situation... I never said that it wasn't devastating, nor that it would only effect one city... However, it's not about to wipe out the Japanese race. Or else they would have been finished at the end of WWII, thanks to a certain western country >.>
I don't know where you live but where I'm at people haven't exactly stopped spending money, the money spent has simply shifted to other areas. People are spending less money on entertainment and more money on Fuel, Food, etc...because of rising inflation costs. In fact some areas affected by the current economic situation are seeing people spend money more freely, with the extremely low costs of houses right now a lot of people are taking advantage of the fact that you can buy a house that 5 years ago would have cost 100k+ for as low as under 15k (at least in Michigan where I am you can easily find houses that low), including my uncle who bought a house for 13k that in 2009 sold for over 100k and my parents who bought 5 bedroom, 2 and 1/2 bathroom house for 5k, 5k they would have never spent on that house were the economic crisis not happening.
I live in Canada, which is doing relatively well compared to the rest of the English speaking world. And as for the rest of your paragraph... Two things:
a) The Great depression is considered the worst time period in all of human history, don't think that the US' current situation even scratches how bad that was
The great depression was already seeing signs of ending in many countries a few years before the outbreak of WWII (the United States being one of them), while there is no denying that WWII did play a role in helping to end the depression the reality is most nations would have seen the end of the great depression in the early 40s even without the war.
Even if they did see the end of it, they would not have seen the economical prosperity the war brought.
While relief efforts and rebuilding projects in Japan will certainly create jobs for the Japanese, it doesn't offset the many many jobs that were lost due to the destruction caused by the Tsunami.
If someone lost their job in a tsunami then, as cruel as it sounds, they have a larger than 50% chance of being dead. Also reconstruction efforts are a lot harder than you might think.
When did anyone debate the success of JRPGs in Japan? You mentioned it sold over 1 million copies in NA and Europe in it's first year, a milestone many western shooters and WRPGs (not to mention sports titles) are able to hit in a much shorter time. The argument was how much of an effect Microsoft having no popularity in Japan with their consoles would effect what system got what games, Dragon Quest selling 2.3 million in the first week in Japan isn't going to have any effect on western gaming. Dragon Quest was a huge success for a JRPG in the West but comparing it to WRPGs, Shooters, Sports Titles, Etc...it was a moderate success at best. Like I said, I LOVE JRPGs...I've invested so many hours in Final Fantasy and Suikoden games it's ridiculous...but that doesn't change the fact that JRPGs and other games that are huge in Japan are at best moderate successes in NA and EU where the market is dominated by Shooters, WRPGS, Sports Franchises, Etc...there are certainly exceptions to the rule but if you look at those exception many of them are shooters as well (Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, etc...)
Did anyone debate the success of Shooters and WRPGs in NA/EU? I know I didn't.
However, do you know why those games get so many sales in the western world? Advertising. And word-of-mouth.
JRPGs rarely get 1 Million sales, let alone in the first year. DQIX was advertised better, though, and got more sales that way. Just the same, it got much better word-of-mouth advertising. Nintendo is started to do this for third party 3DS games; People will know about games that they would have never heard of had they never travelled to an Internet chat room or an Anime club.
Plus, if you think about it, if a niche game in a small country like Japan can sell the same amount as a popular NA game in the first week, then you can tell which place is less anti-video game
