#23075 Super Mario Wii U

Posted by Feld0 on 21 August 2011 - 01:45 AM

Consider for a moment that every main-series Mario platformer we've ever seen has been made to take advantage of its system's strengths. Super Mario 64 re-imagined Mario's world in full 3D on Nintendo's first console that could handle that. Super Mario Sunshine took advantage of the GameCube's raw power to deliver massive, sprawling, beautiful worlds and lots of puzzles built around its water physics. The two Galaxy games could not have happened without the Wii Remote's pointer.

Following that pattern, it's only logical to assume that Super Mario U will be tailored to deliver an experience conceptualized for the Wii U, and nothing but. The main things the Wii U has going for it are its HD graphics (and horsepower beyond any console on the market right now) and the touchscreen controller (possibly online, too, but I'm not gonna count on that yet for hopefully obvious reasons). I'm having a hard time imagining how the touchscreen could really further the Mario experience, but there is so much potential in the number-crunching side of the system, I'm surprised there isn't more speculation about it.

Think about this for a moment: the Wii U, with its 25 GB discs and processing power, has the ability to bring us a fully realized Mushroom Kingdom. It would be a natural evolution of the non-linear gameplay of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine; except that the entire world could now be realized as one continuous entity - no level select screens, no loading, nothing. Imagine being dropped in front of Peach's castle, with Mario's entire world waiting to be explored. You could travel to different towns, meet NPC's, perform errands for them, and also do whatever the game uses to track your progress (not sure if collecting Power Stars would still work).

Yes, it would be mashing Mario together with gameplay elements of Zelda and Metroid, but I can't see how that's a bad thing. It would certainly be a "riskier" Mario game for Nintendo to produce, but really no more so than Zelda: Skyward Sword. The idea of an open-world Mushroom Kingdom would be taking full advantage of at least one of the Wii U's defining traits - something that the Mario series is well known for. Now, Nintendo and the industry as a whole have been moving towards more linear, guided experiences so I don't know how good the chances of an open-world Mario game ever coming to fruition really are. But come on, it would be like GTA with Yoshis, power-ups, and Nintendo's amazing art teams. Who wouldn't want that?

I was a little lost for inspiration, so I pulled out an old picture I took for my XStylus Crayon video review.

#22276 GameCollector's Game Sales Thread (New stuff and things!)

Just posting to let everyone know that I personally gave Gamecollector44 permission to start this thread via private message, so don't go ragging on him for violating rule #7. :)

I've tried to record 15 times now.
1-3 was corruption
4-7 was Parents interrupting
8-15 was pure suckage on my part
Let's hope I can get it down before 30 tries

I suggest recording to an external hard drive or USB stick. It might help a bit with performance.

Personally, I think she looks more like a Lickitung in that picture.

Actually, yeah, she does. ;)

I just loved the way the tenth episode ended, with Princess Celestia leaving because of an "infestation" in Fillydelphia.

Btw, here's an awesome comic strip I just came across:

#21515 Super Mario 3D Land

Posted by Feld0 on 14 August 2011 - 11:47 AM

I think the story will just be something along the lines of: Princess peach gets kidnapped by Bowser. Mario has to rescue her. Personally, I don't find the story important in many Mario games. I'd rather have lots of good levels.

But what's wrong with having lots of good levels and a good story?

Super Mario 3D Land, to my knowledge, is supposed to be Super Mario Bros. 3 with a z-axis. From the impressions I've read, it plays very much like a classic sidescroller, even though the graphics make it look like a Super Mario Galaxy sequel. The camera is entirely scripted - you never get direct control over it - and usually looks at the action from one of four or five different camera angles (from videos, it looks like much of the time it's a side-on view). Mario is locked into moving in eight directions, and you run by pressing a run button. All of the levels have a time limit, and apparently do away with the sheer grandeur of the Galaxy games in exchange for shorter, faster levels focused on quick bursts of fun.

I still have no doubt it's going to be a great game, but it sounds really weird from what I've read about it so far. It's definitely gonna be different from any other Mario game we've ever had before.

And I second AMAC on Yoshi. Yoshi should definitely be in more platformers. I'm still waiting to see a true sequel to Super Mario World...

EDIT: I just realized that the thread's title was slightly off. It's Super Mario 3D Land, not Super Mario Land 3D. I've corrected it.

#21372 Is David still a mod?

Posted by Feld0 on 13 August 2011 - 11:51 PM

Allow me to take a moment to explain David's role in the management of this forum, because there appears to be some confusion.

I am the sole owner of this site. All of its data resides on my own server, and I am the legally registered owner of it and its domain. David does not partake in any actual administration or moderation around here - that's entirely up to me and the mods I choose - but what he does do for this site is something absolutely crucial that I, sadly, am in no position to do on my own (tell me, honestly, how many of you knew about me before the "big merge"?).

David's incredible social reach is a priceless luxury that I simply don't have, and as a friend of mine, he is doing us a huge favour by spreading the word about this community like only he can. Although he is not an active member of the community, he is a key reason for its success, so his being an admin is more of a symbolic way of expressing his importance to us. Without him, there is a certain other site I will not name that I am almost sure would have overtaken and crushed us, if in no part because its domain name created a lot of confusion among all the 3DS Forums folk.

Adding a link here to 3DS Forums is actually something that neither of us thought to do. I'm not sure how much of a purpose there is to it, since 90% of you are migrants from there and the rest of you are no doubt aware of its existence. At this point, it's very important to keep the look and feel of this forum as focused on the Wii U as possible - adding a link to 3DS Forums would be almost equivalent to splitting the General Gaming section in two, which dilutes activity and generally isn't a good idea for new forums - but I'll talk to David about it and see what he thinks. I just don't think there's much in it for 3DS Forums, but it may potentially do a little damage to Wii U Forums.

Now, I also don't want to make any promises, but David and I have thrown around a few thoughts for working together in a closer fashion that would help each of us focus on our strengths. It's far more complicated than that, of course, but we do have a few cool ideas for the future. Stay tuned, especially once the Wii U's release date approaches.

Not sure where it should go, though.

#20456 My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Just watched episode 6, with Trixie and the Ursa Minor. The show only gets better. I hope Twilight makes more use of her magic further on - you hardly see her doing anything more than simple telekinesis prior to this episode.

It's too bad I can't get nearly as many ponies and rainbows at a time as I'd like to, though. I'm watching this show totally in secret - I don't think my parents are even aware of its existence. :P

Sounds good :D I must say it's great how you actually listen to our feedback, on other forums I've been on (even in their early stages of growth) the owner(s) haven't ever been nearly as active.

Giving my members what they want is my top priority in running this forum. So I take feedback seriously and always pay attention to it. I really see no reason it should be any other way, regardless of what stage of growth a community is at.

I was once part of a forum that the owner didn't give two damns about. I tried to make contact with him and coax him into letting go of his site and letting someone else take charge of it, but he insisted on keeping it under his own umbrella even though he officially quit activity three years ago. Lots of feedback was thrown around, with some truly great ideas for improving the site and its management, but the owner hardly responded to any of it, let alone make most of it happen. The site then deteriorated into just another "discuss everything" forum and the warm sense of community disappeared as trolls took over and I realized we were being treated like fish in a fish tank. I since left the place, but I felt bad about it because there were a few truly awesome people there.

Perhaps my experience there has shown me just how important it is for a forum to have an active leader who not only cares about his users and their opinions, but is also willing to work with them to make the site better for everyone. Wii U Forums is only the third community I've been an admin of, and the second that I've owned, so I can't really brag that I've got loads of "experience" running community after massive community. But if you can commit to it, stay active over the long term, and most importantly, treat your members like human beings and not a revenue-generating herd of cattle, it doesn't matter whether you've run X number of communities in your life. All you need is to care, commit, and have a little common sense. :D

Don't worry. I'll always be able to do it.
/blatant lie

Haha, you're free to resign at any time. :P

I'd really appreciate this.

Also, thanks for taking care of the members of this forum in the way you do.
I'm sure because of that, this forum will stay on top of other Wii U forums :D

You're very welcome. It's just what I do as my little contribution to the world. I'm glad you enjoy being a part of my community. See my reply to NinjaShock. :)

10 new introduction threads per day is an awful lot. The number of intros we'll get is bound to increase in the future, but I doubt we will have ten of them per day for a sustained period of time. I expect there will be a huge rush when the Wii U releases that may last up to a week, and possibly one or more smaller rushes if any really huge announcements happen before then, so I think we can work something out with the Guides to be especially active during those times. But it will be a long time until we start seeing 10+ new intro threads per day, trust me.

It is a problem that is not worth addressing in detail at this time, but I do have a few ideas to mitigate it. One, a system may be introduced in which certain Guides get assigned to certain intro threads, as a way of sharing the work; two, I may offer special perks to the Guides to encourage them not to give up their position beyond just getting an orange name.

Do keep in mind, as this is the Internet, nothing is ever set in stone. So the rules for being a Guide are flexible and most likely will eventually change to match the forum's growth.

#19703 Wii U Graphical Demo in case you missed it.

Posted by Feld0 on 07 August 2011 - 10:50 PM

This is old but some of you might not have seen it yet. I didn't get any results from the search bar and I apologise if there is already a thread like this.

By the way it looks significantly "crisper" if played in HD.

NinjaShock, of all people, Guides should be aware of the search feature. <_<

I've merged your thread into the original one we had for this.
