#88255 Eurogamer Observations Playing with Wii U

Posted by dagwood dang on 17 June 2012 - 07:17 AM

It's the TV's problem. I bet if it were hooked up to a CRT (old school "big booty" tube TV) the images would be in sync.

Plasma, LCD, and LED TV's have a little lag to them. The numbers vary between brands and the tech they went with.
Going to "Game mode" is supposed to help reduce the lag, but it doesn't eliminate it. If you have a big screen, lag is pretty much unavoidable.
IMO, latency is the biggest problem with today's tech. It's really killing our ability to be precise in gaming nowadays,
and since most consumers don't even know it, the demand for better, faster response TVs isn't there.

Here's a way to test this with audio:
If you have New Super Mario Bros., pop that in your Wii. Get killed by a goomba or grab an item in a level that activates a sound in your Wii remote (I think grabbing a 1up or getting all 8 red coins should do it). If you have a big screen TV, you'll notice a slight delay between the chime in the TV's speakers and the chime in your Wii remote, with the sound coming out of the Wii remote slightly before the TV. If you have "game mode" in your TV, it'll reduce that delay a little bit, but it's still not going to be in sync.

So basically, that delay in time that you're hearing is the amount of time that stuff is going on in your game before you even get to see or hear it. Definitely NOT ideal for gaming.

the good folks at thewiiu.com. Enjoy.

Original Post:

Hey all.

#85185 Heading down to E3!

Posted by dagwood dang on 06 June 2012 - 10:21 PM

Okay *cracks knuckles*
So I'm back home. Unfortunately, It was my final day at E3. I won't be able to go tomorrow, 'cause I have to get back to my job. Gotta pay bills.

Anyhow, let's get started.

I think this is one on some peoples minds besides me. On games like ZombiU that use the Gamepad heavily what exactly do you do when someone wants to watch the TV do you just press the TV button or is it like on the menu?

I'm not sure about that one, I don't think the "tv" button was active for people to try that. I didn't get to play it myself, cause the lines were over 9000! That's a good question because a secondary screen is pretty important for that game. I'd guess that if you were only playing on the Upad (short for Wii U Game Pad), things like the back pack menu would just slide in from the side or something? and the screen would just have to switch to first person mode whenever it's utilized, like a regular game. That's just my guess tho. (you'll see people playing it in my vid)

How much do E3 "ONLY EXHIBITS" Pass cost(like the one you have and where do you first purchase)?

E3 passes can be purchased from the E3 site, however, you MUST be part of the industry or media to get your hands on one. Chances are this guy got one from a friend not going, or he's part of the media.

I got my pass from a certain major publishing company (yes, with my own name on it ;)). Didn't pay for it, but andodel is right, you have to be affiliated in some form or fashion, however, it didn't seem like everyone there was... but who can tell, right?

Do you, (or anyone I suppose), know do the Wii-motes have to be the Wiimote +'s?  Or can regular old Wii-Motes work?  Is it game specific or are only the + ones compatible with the Wii-U?

Well, the lovely booth assistants either didn't have that information, or they weren't allowed to say,
so they just didn't know, or Nintendo had a gag on them, while their ninjas watched in the shadows .
Another guess, but I'd say the Wii U can still use the non + Wii remotes, since it's said to be fully backward compatable with Wii.

As for my question, do they have any Wiiu Pro controllers there, and if so, whats your opinion on them?

Yes they did and I loved em. Aside from the non-analog triggers ( <_<*grunts*), it felt pretty much perfect. Like the Upad, it just took a second to get used to the face button/right stick swap, but once I got it down, it became very comfortable and easy to use. I'll definitely be buying a couple of them.

my biggest question: so far i havent been able to spot anyone holding the controller with their middle fingers on the triggers and their index fingers on the shoulder buttons at the same time, is it possible to do that or does the shape not allow this? thx in advanced :)

Yeah, It's possible to do. Depends on the size of your hands, I guess. The shoulder and trigger buttons aren't too terribly far apart, so if that's your play style...

ohhh, someone to throw questions at!
if you see the console, does it make any noise or let off heat, id expect no but i want to "hear" it from you(bad pun)
also, which games seem shown off the most, which are sorta kept in a dark booth

First, it was too noisy in there to tell (you'll hear in the video), and second, most of the Wii U's were placed inside these plastic booths (you'll see in the video). Sorry I can't answer your question. I hope it's quiet.

Have you played zombiu yet? If so then how fun was it

:( no... Sadly, I did not. The lines were long. I tried to go away for a while to come back later, hoping it would die down, but NOOOOOPE. Everybody was loving it. Easily one of the top games in the Wii U area (up there with Nintendo Land)

Hm... I guess I'll ask. How does the Gamepad compare regarding weight? I expect it to have a bit more heft to it than a normal controller, although it was reported to be light. Could you see yourself playing a game marathon with it for 10 hours straight or so? Both used normally, and like a game such as ZombiU where you're expected to lift it up to your face occasionally.

They said it's as light as a notebook.

Nah, It's heavier than a notebook, if we're talking about the same kind of notebook. 3 spiral notebooks, maybe? It has just a little weight to it, but it's nothing unbearable.
My question to you guys is "are you planning on standing up while you play all of your games?" I don't know about you, but when i play, I sit on my couch, leaning forward with my elbows resting on my thigh/knee area. Shouldn't be a problem. Think of it like an iPad that's very easy to grip.

Awesome guys. Right now I'm working on the video. Hoping to have it up sooon friends.

#84723 Heading down to E3!

Posted by dagwood dang on 05 June 2012 - 07:07 PM

I guess my only question right now is how does the controller feel.

The controller feels... Great!
all that talk about it being "too bulky" is ridiculous. Granted, there was a redesign, but even the original Wii U Pad was probably okay.
However, I welcome the new changes.

Now the sad part:
I can officially confirm that the new Wii U Game Pad does NOT have analog triggers. They're digital (just buttons, no squishy).
Also, No analog triggers on the new Wii U Pro controller. They're just buttons, and from what I've heard, These designs are final. I was quite disappointed.
I'll explain more in a full post later. :)

What are the graphics like?

Pikmin 3 graphically, how is it in person?

I can safely say that the graphics for Wii U are GREAT!
Lots of detail, even in toonish games like Pikmin. Zombie U looked awesome, not just graphically, but intuitively! In fact, Every game (Nintendo Land, Zombie U, P-100, Scribblenauts, Trine 2, Game & Wario, Fit U, Sing, etc.) ran very, VERY smoothly with neat Wii U Game Pad integration, I'd bet 60fps+ easily.

Now Nintendo (as a developer) isn't really known for trying to make HD realistic games like, say, an Uncharted, but even in the simplified style of the Mii designs, you can see great detail in them. Subtle proof of Wii Us secret might.

P.S. I actually had fun playing Nintendo Land today. Can't wait to go back tomorrow.
As I've said earlier, I'll make a more complete post with details of my experience,
but for now keep askin' them questions if you got em, guys. I'm happy to share.

#84417 Heading down to E3!

Posted by dagwood dang on 05 June 2012 - 10:12 AM

Hey all!

So I managed to get myself an E3 Expo pass!! Don't ask how, 'cause I can't tell you.

I'll be there getting as much info as I can. I'm going to try to put to rest many unanswered questions I've been asking (and STILL asking after Nintendo's E3 press conference).
I will have my smart phone on me with access to thewiiu.com, so if you might have any questions regarding the Wii U, the Wii U Game Pad, Wii U games, or even stuff from other consoles,
be sure to post the question here. I'll try my best to find answers for them all.

As you can see from the pic, I still need to shower up and get ready to go. Haha!

#80857 What music are you listening to at the moment?

Posted by dagwood dang on 26 May 2012 - 10:17 AM

I'm down with anything that has a strong melody and feels real in the moment. Don't care for fake, overly auto-tuned music.

Eclectic. From Gospel to Manson

Recently, I've had this stuck in my head.

It sounds all over the place. Even after you bypass the shaky translations,

bullet point by bullet point, it doesn't really make all that much sense.

#78888 How would you react if...

Posted by dagwood dang on 17 May 2012 - 08:05 PM

That might not be as absurd as you think. If you think about it, a flash memory cartridge holding about 50GB is quite possible. Might be a little more expensive to mass produce than a High Density Disk, or whatever Nintendo is planning on using, but it would be much faster for loading times. Then again, maybe it won't be too expensive. Flash memory is getting cheaper every day.

Personally, I like the idea.
