#142407 Rumored xbox 720 CPU specs... 1.6GHZ

Posted by GAMER1984 on 03 December 2012 - 01:04 AM

Here are quotes from the Iwata Ask on Wii U console regarding the CPU.

"So I myself have been happy to see how far game consoles have come. I hope people will be impressed by the types of software enabled by the CPU
It turned out to be a CPU without any strange habits—one that runs just the way you expect".

Sorry if you guys don't but I have more faith in Nintendo than random Neogaf posters. Seriously they have 30 plus years. If they say the harware will be capable of runnig powerful engines and that developers have to optimized engines for the architecture I'm fine with that. I have faith in nintendo... They don't say things about harware just for PR like a sony does. I believe when next gen is over people are gonna be praising nintendo for what they created with the Wii U... Small, efficent, powerful designed machine.

This CPU drama makes me remember when Intel released the Core 2 line. The LGA 775 Pentium 4s were known for their clock rate and yet, when the Core 2 was released, some were barely clocked at 1.6GHz and could easily beat the f* out some P4s. Adding a core or 3 changes a lot of things too! The clock speed is only part of a bigger picture.

Also, if the clocking gets too high, there are also other issues appearing : heat (which can be a serious issue in a home console) and CPU lifetime. There are a lot of stuff to take into account when you create hardware.

I don't get why people are hating on the WiiU and how supposedly weak/slow ect ect the console is. I've owned my 360/PS3 since launch and I'm honestly excited to get a WIIU. It looks like a lot of fun, and I can't wait to get one.

#142193 Forget about the specs..wiiU is next gen

Posted by Dan1984uk on 02 December 2012 - 03:01 PM

Seriously, the wiiU is an awesome console. The whole experience on the wiiU is unlike any other console out there now. The gamepad is brilliant, the graphics on trine 2, black ops & zombie u are quality. Miiverse is a great way to socialise, and is almost like a game in itself. Specs clearly aren't everything, the wiiU is more than capable of producing next gen games, new experiences.
Makes ya wonder what the ps4 and 720 can do now, that will make them unique to current ps3/360..just increasing specs is pointless. Look at some of the games already on ps3 by the way, heavy rain, last of us comes out next year and beyond. They don't look like they can get much better.
The wiiU's unique gamepad and software makes this next gen gaming. ..the games are a plus ;)

I have to agree the Wii U is quickly becoming my favourite console of the last 10 years it has everything i could want from a console and more.

I love my Wii U it is easily my favourite console.

#141596 Wii U Cpu is horrible? Real developers

Posted by Hinkik on 01 December 2012 - 03:41 PM

Well this is gonna sound funny but this "kinda confirms that wii u truly is nextgen."

The next generation of graphics and games is heavely based on the gpu. Almost everything is simulated and rendered with the gpu.

Since the CPU and memory is cheap ones and the system still is 300 bucks shouldn't that meant that the gpu is really good?

#93740 Wii U CPU confirmed (by respected game producer) As weak.

hehe
silverismoney's reasoning actually matches processor with a rumor not long ago, funny coincidence, neat find? who knows
i do have expectations on this thing though, and the mass amount of developers saying things is starting to contridict each other
but i do have to agree, how the masses are talking, it seems to be only slightly above current generation consoles, and it better not be

Let's just say this.

Nintendo has learned a lot from IBM working with their tech. Some of that Is applied to the custom power based CPU. The Watson paths and algorithms built for the power architecture are a huge gain as well. The CPU itself is much more powerful than anything available in a console currently. no doubt the power pc capabilities inherent to a power CPU are greatly enhanced and will be utilized heavily. But there is more...

I'm thinking IBM had to have given Nintendo a sweetheart deal for them to have what they have. IBM has lost Microsoft this time and Sony is going x86 as well. Can see them wanting to make a fight of it.

The GPU is very nice as well. For those thinking they can simply buy the same gpu or an upgrade of it are missing the point. The wii u does not use a stock PC gpu. Also, because of the efficiency inherent to a console package and due to nintendos relentless focus on efficiency and refinement, the Wii U handily outperforms any PC with comparable specifications.

My prediction/hypothesis/whatever:

The wii U wil look marginally better than current systems at launch. The many ports are limited by default as those games began life on lesser systems and were built around those limitations.

About a year after launch, the real gods become available. Games written specifically to take advantage of the superior firepower running on engines built/modified/enhanced to run on said hardware.

They will be ready to face off against the launch hype of Microsoft and Sony new consoles.

There is a reason why so many are excited about what the wii u allows us to make. But for those looking to sell soon, they have had to deal with the lowest common denominator dev kits for performance budgeting, current game engines, porting from older architectures, etc.

Nintendo isn't coming up with a 360+ type system. They ate ushering in the next generation.

Just like microsoft did with the 360-and it's games looked like Xbox 1 games until a year after launch as well.

Poor Patcher, I'd hate Nintendo too if they constantly made me look like I was bad at my job.

I don't think he's right at all.
What I think may have happened is Nintendo asked third parties what they wanted, and most of them said "360-like controller".

This guy is just kind of weird in the sense that he just kind of talks out of nowhere all of the time, making assumptions, making stuff up. You know, what some industry analysts often do.

I'd like to remind you guys that while debates like this are fine, insulting other users is not, and some of the posts in this thread are bordering on being insulting. If I see anymore offensive posts here, I'm going to start giving out warnings.

Can we also please stop typing in all-caps?

#92765 Debunking the 8th Gen

Posted by Link707 on 10 July 2012 - 12:54 AM

I found it interesting that he pointed out that the Cloud Services offered by Microsoft and Sony will make all that hardware you paid for obsolete, and you may as well gone for an OnLive box.

Cloud services are far in the future. Right now it's technically impossible in the us and many other areas around the world. Internets speeds are way to slow, especially in the us. Also most Internet companies set a bandwidth on the connection. Until this changes cloud gaming is impractical. I don't see that changing in 5 years, it's going to take at least ten years

Wow! A game system can play movies and I can browse the Web! High five Sony! :P

Although in all seriousness, I wish the web browser on the 3DS actually worked properly and at least played youtube videos :/

#92490 E6760 is this the processor wiiu gpu is based on nintengen/metaldave

Posted by I4got2pullout999 on 07 July 2012 - 08:38 PM

Wii u is a beast.

Very powerful CPU. Extremely powerful gpu (both customized to be better for gaming than the stock setups), a ton of ram, and the architectural efficiency to make to whole much better than a sum of its parts.

The thing is powerful. The perfect machine to herald the arrival of next generation gaming.

Add to that the  we gamepad, and Nintendo has just revolutionized the entire industry. Again.

The wii was Nintendo in survival mode. Amazing what they can do when they are backed against a wall.

The wii U is Nintendo doing exactly what they want with the resources they want. and the leverage to get great deals on their hardware.

That's how such a powerful system with such great capability is going to be priced at a decent number.

great time to be in the gaming industry. Whether a creator or a consumer. Mostly because Nintendo has never been this humble, open, and easy to work with.

#91332 Wii U Has “Capability Issues” Due To Single Processor

Posted by Socalmuscle on 02 July 2012 - 03:37 PM

[a]list: With Nintendo, where do you think they came up short in the way they showed the Wii U?
Dean Takahashi: They have a major issue with the capability of the Wii U console where it has a single processor but it has to drive multiple displays. A single graphics chip inside the console has to drive the big screen, the main game screen, but it also has to provide the imagery for the tablet controller, the game pad. And yet the system itself isn’t that powerful. Nintendo only showed games with one game pad controller and the TV. Most games out there, if you’re in a social setting, you want two controllers. Nintendo didn’t show any games that do that. They admitted in a Q&A that the games are going to run slower if you have two game pads and playing on a main display. That’s a fairly big issue for them. They made a good case that you can play with one controller and multiple Wii controllers, what they call asymmetric gaming where one person is looking at the small tablet screen and trying to deploy zombies while the people playing with the controllers were all on the main screen. You come up with very creative, different kinds of games where it’s one against four, or one person going online. They tried to justify and turn into an advantage this major weakness of the Wii U, but I think a lot of people saw this as a weakness. The games themselves were creative. They tried to do something like Wii Sports with NintendoLand, which has mini-games in it that explore the capabilities of the tablet and the touch screen. But there wasn’t an obvious blockbuster within those games. They may have had a good one in ZombieU, but in the demos it didn’t necessarily play that well. Nintendo came up as a pretty big disappointment at E3.

The ATI chip has built in ATI tech for driving multiple displays.  Kind of irresponsible for this guy to downplay it to investors of all people.

Also, he notes that the machine isn't that powerful.  He is unfortunately incorrect and he also has no idea what's in the system. Irresponsibility strikes again.

He is right that two gamepads take up more resources (duh) and will cause a performance hit.  Your game console driving 3 screens? Yeah, that's not a shock. You will be able to use two gamepads.  But in the most graphically demanding and impressively visual games, you may not even use the gamepad screen for much beyond menu item selection.  that would be normal, OK, and a perfectly acceptable use of the gamepad while showcasing the systems graphics chops.

If having only one tablet controller working is a weakness, then what would he call systems that have ZERO? Again, asinine logic here.

Yet, Nintendo has revamped the console to utilize two gamepads.

Nintendo needed a killer app at E3.  they did not deliver.  I think they sensed that their AAA titles wouldn't be in show form and the major third party games wouldn't be either.  so they went the tried and true Zombie route.  Zombies sell and a zombie game is an easy showcase.  So Ubisoft trashed Killer Freaks and cobbled together a zombie game from its remains.  It's no wonder the game was merely very good looking at E3.

In the end, this individual is jumping the gun and doing so from the wrong end.  he has zero facts to offer, zero insight as to the systems potential, and a skewed view on what pros and cons are.

It's his career, so he can do what he wants and deal with the consequences.

Interestingly, some known studios who last year were merely happy with the system have become very excited right before E3, lauding the systems power, graphical capabilities, processor, etc.

Ignore the anti-nintendo sentiment.  especially when it comes from someone who has zero info other than what he googled one day over coffee, then got paid to write about it.

It was the same way with the Gamecube, which was a tour de force graphically. So many were calling it the kiddy console, noting the GPU having less transistors, and predicting less powerful graphics.  When it came out, it not only stomped the PS2 power wise, it at least held its own against Microsofts fabled Xbox.  Media sway is a dirty game.  Don't play it.

The Wii U is a powerful, next generation console that is easy to make great and graphically impressive games on.  It far exceeds the current consoles in specs and is worthy of the "next generation" tag. we should all enjoy it when it comes out.
