#195395 Best WiiU graphics

Posted by Socalmuscle on 16 April 2013 - 10:16 AM

So far, Need for Speed looks to have the best texturing.  Possibly models too.

Nintendo land looks amazing in terms of the lighting and effect quality.

When I first saw NintendoLand, I thought: "Oh no.  Nintendo is actually just selling out, cashing in, etc."  But I am gald to see I was wrong.  The models are not super high poly, though in some areas, It looks like they did go high poly just because they can.  The texturing in some areas is astounding actually.  Far better than anything on the 360 and PS3.  And the size of textures they can use on the Wii U is equally astounding.  The lighting is amazing.  Sure, it sounds funny to talk in such terms about a game that is designed to be silly looking.  But we are looking at the technical aspects.  For a game that doesn't appear to be trying too hard, it looks like NintendoLand is Nintendo showing off what they can do, but doing so while keeping the theater curtain only cracked open a smidge.

I'm thinking NintendoLand is an early rough draft peak at forthcoming Nintendo graphics.  The clarity, crispness, "brightness," etc. of the NintendoLand graphics is extremely nice coming out of an era where consoles tended to render scenes "dark." The Dreamcast, when it came out, also had a bright, shiny, crisp look to the graphics, versus the PS2 which, while technically more powerful, tended to render "dark."

If you want to look at graphics quality in the traditional way, look at Need for Speed for the graphics crown up to this point.  the developers didn't have to try very hard.  They simply had useable tools from Nintendo, once they had that, they could simply build the game, import the high resolution PC assets, and it practically took care of itself (of course it helps that they had already made the game).  The time saved in having to learn the hardware from scratch was invested in improvements to the game itself.

Need for Speed is the best showcase for Wii U right now in terms of what most people would say is "Best Wii U Graphics."

But it is just the tip of the iceberg.

#195288 Why are people still ripping on the Wii U even after the X demo?

DexterousGecko, on 15 Apr 2013 - 06:15, said:So what defines "next" gen?
People like to play cute with the term and say it literally just means the next generation of any company's console. Since the Wii U is nintendo's next gen, it is indeed "next gen". If Sony came out with a retro console that had genesis graphics and gameplay, it could be argued that it is sony's "next gen" system, but it wouldn't be anywhere near "next gen" Next gen isn't just in comparison to what a company's console did before. Its a comparison to other current consoles on the market.
However, I believe most people think of next gen (at least in term of consoles, PC's will always be superior at least in terms of graphics) as a significant step up in comparison to current games. For example, Skyrim, Borderlands 2, Battlefield 3 etc. Right now, the Wii U has not shown anything that is remotely superior to anything the current generation consoles can provide. I keep hearing rumours about wii u versions being the "definitive" versions, but where are these games? The Wii U is Nintendo's next gen console, yes. So far however, it has not proven that it is "next gen" in the broader definition of the word. People can talk all they want about specs and tflops, ram, blah blah blah. It doesn't mean anything when there isn't a single game out that proves Wii U is a significant step up from the ps360.
That said, I do believe the Wii U will turn out to be next gen (at least, i'd be surprised if it didn't, it's 7 years newer then current gen systems for goodness sake)

No guy, it doesnt work like that. You cant make up new definitions for alrready established words. A generationalways has been, and always will be a term dealing with the subject of temporality, and not anything else.
Generation, noun.
the entire body of individuals born and living at about the same time: the postwar generation.
this recent explosion of complete silly pony nonsense STARTING AND ONLY STARTING AND NOT SEEN OR EVEN EXISTING ANYWHERE ELSE EVER UNTIL LAST GEN WITH THE WII is a marketing ploy pushed by publishers and the game media to brainwash the weak of mind, and its sadly incredibly effective.

Someone hasn't seen nfs:mw

Then why are developers flocking to the ps4 if the Wii U isnt that far behind in tech?

Because of the Sony marketing machine, the way Sony has been reaching out to developers, and the supposed ease of increasingly the market of their games (PC and console)  with x86 heritage.

In addition, games are an art as well as a business. If Sony has convinced developers that ps4 is super powerful, then it makes sense that you'd want your work of art shown off in the best light possible.

Motivation is a factor. Games are made by people. These people need motivation to put their best foot forward. Regardless of its great capabilities, if the wii u is being (foolishly) laughed at, then your motivation to specialize in that system takes a hit.

Such is life.

I imagine that such attitudes will change when strong wii u software is revealed.

#193952 Arkham: Asylum vs. City Which do you prefer?

Posted by Socalmuscle on 12 April 2013 - 11:58 PM

Both games are brilliant in their own right.

But the gameplay formulas, the story, and the clear sense of progress in Asylum (as well as some truly amazing moments) make it far superior to City.

Hopefully future ark ham games forego the whole idea of a big world just to be a big world. Asylum was one of the best games ever made.

City was great at what it did. But asylum was way more fun.

#193917 Rayman Legends delay results in 30 new levels, several new boss fights

Posted by Socalmuscle on 12 April 2013 - 09:32 PM

So 20 more levels for the 360, ps3 and the console it was supposed to be exclusive for.

Gee... Thanks?

To be honest, Im not sure i even believe them that these levels are necessarily "new." they can say whatever they want. There is no way to prove it. Rahman is sweet. This is the best Rahman ever. But ubi screwed their own developers as well as the Nintendo faithful.

Nah. There are a couple of other games at that time that I'll be picking up.

Rayman had its hype... Created its momentum... Then squashed it.

No amount of levels are going to rebuild that. And they had a golden opportunity of a non competitive window to take in the sales. They won't see that again for another 6 years at the earliest.

It's called a stupid decision.

That's all there is to be said. There is no fixing it. Unless the reduce the genes price for wii u owners only.

#192225 Why are people still ripping on the Wii U even after the X demo?

Posted by Socalmuscle on 09 April 2013 - 04:05 PM

The X demo showed a really cool looking game in its alpha, or possibly beta stages.

There were more than a few items there that appeared to be in design discussion.

The game will look better than the demo by a good amount.  I also have yet to see truly great footage of said demo.

But one thing about this game is that it is a true open world game.  Much like Skyrim. And Skyrim had some serious issues with performance.

The X demo didn't "wow" anyone with its graphics.  It did look really cool though, while very clearly doing many things the PS360 can not.

PS4 KZ graphics beat it handily, eve though that's not an apples to apples comparo due to the difference between true open world and "stages."

The "X" screens look better than some of the Ps4 games shown, but some of the PS4 games also destroy the current version of "X" graphically.

That said, sony simply pays attention to showing their games in the best light, sometimes resorting to false advertising and sometimes simply choosing the most impressive screens, stages, angles, etc., whereas Nintendo is somehow ok with showing compressed footage of the worst screens, videos, stages, angles, etc. of their games.

Nintendo should have sent out 4K screenshots of target renders too... nah! I'll take the real thing, thanks.

#190531 Unreal Engine 4: Elemental - PlayStation 4 vs. PC Comparison

Posted by Socalmuscle on 05 April 2013 - 01:24 PM

Socalmuscle, on 04 Apr 2013 - 16:49, said:Take a look at the chest plate armor on the fire dude. Texture reflections on pc. Completely absent on ps4.

If ue4 belongs on ps4 then it definitely belongs on wii u.

I'm kinda disappointed that a system which everyone seems to think is really powerful is already being beat (by a noticeable margin) by PC's.

For what it's worth, the original UE4 demo was on a pretty outrageous PC setup.  the new Infiltrator demo on a more realistic (but still very expensive) PC setup looks a lot more like The Samaritan, but with worse character models (especially the horrid face models).

Also, I would expect the PS4 can do a better job of the elemental demo than what was shown.  I suspect that the Unreal 4 engine is somewhat facing a struggle to leap ahead.  Not enough foresight was brought in to the beginning of development and therefore it is more like UE3 Plus (as in UE3 plus prettier particles and more realistic lighting - but at a very steep performance hit for a difference that isn't immediately noticeable.).  In other words, not much "bang for your buck." think of UE4 like a very optimized UE3, but with a few, new, processing intensive options.

The only problem with "UE3 Plus" is that the "plus" (4) part of it requires so much power to accomplish so (seemingly) little that no one really is going to care much.  And that leaves us with looking for minor details in what is essentially a very impressive demo on both platforms.

The reason we even care however, is that it is plain that the Wii U could do exactly what the PS4 is doing here.  and yet epic wants to artificially exaggerate their engine by saying it wouldn't be a good fit for the Wii U.

#190505 Next Xbox is confirmed online all the time 'Deal with it' - Adam Orth

Posted by Socalmuscle on 05 April 2013 - 12:32 PM

exactly.

microsoft has halo and gears.

with destiny coming out on all platforms, that doesnt seem to be a compelling reason to have the "stupid" console.

i bought my kid sister a 360 because i felt it was the best fit for her.

she lives in an area with no internet.  only possible via satellite that often doesnt work and is so skow and so expensive, it isnt worth it.

she has doesnt have a wii u until the update is built in.

but this assures that she will not have the 720. lol

so stupid.  but thats why ea loves them.

#190127 Wii U port of Deus Ex: Human Revolution "is sharper than the PC version...

Posted by Socalmuscle on 04 April 2013 - 11:32 AM

The use of the gamepad seems the biggest improvement but clearly it would be great to see some visual improvements in the game hopefully not at the expense of frame rates. Maybe this will be the first wii u game to show marked improvement over 360 and PS3 in all areas. Lets hope it sells well enough that over publishers and developers keep developing for wii u.

I've got the 360 version and haven't even started it yet though.

Need for speed beat deus ex to the punch in terms of improvements in all areas. The wii u destroys the 360 there. Destroys.

Destroys.

And deus ex is more about art direction than it is about actual graphics quality (though the graphics are certainly nice). The OC version didn't look much better than the console version. But the wii u version appears to use enhance the pc game. Not actual graphics upgrades. Just using a couple new tricks. Add in the gamepad and various fixes and this is the best version of the game.

Sales would go nuclear of it wasn't already played out. It is one of the best games ever though. I might pick it up for wii u just to replay the definitive version.

Can't wait for the next Deus Ex on Wii U.

Games like It and Watch Dogs are definitely the kind that reel you in and take over your life. For as long as the game lasts anyway. Lol

Deus ex: hr had me mind locked into coming home and playing it for hours on end every day for weeks. Kept thinking how genius it was.

Wii u fans everywhere need this game.

If you haven't played it, do yourself a favor and get it. It's that good.

#189435 Confirmed: Wii U GPU only supports up to DX10 level graphics

Posted by Socalmuscle on 02 April 2013 - 08:56 PM

Silly 3DUDE. You really are picky. You should enjoy the Wii U for all the great gaymes we are getting. Sure the graphics aren't PC like but that doesn't matter when you are having fun slaying Bokoblins in Zelda

Omg. Are you joking???

I hope so.

Not only are the. Wii u graphics "pc-like" with need for speed and dues ex, but its capable of quitevavbit more than that.

And calling 3dood silly when you say what you have just said boggles the minds of a thousand of those three eyed Martians in toy story.

And the dx10 story here is almost funny if it wasn't so stupid.

The veiled swipe at wii u saying crap like "who cares if the graphics suck! It's going to be teh marios!"

The reality is this:
Yes. The Mario is cool.
But the wii U also has the graphics down.

So Nintendo gamers can have their cake and eat it too.

Right now, we are only seeing the wii u begin to be understood and next gen console gfx are being realized. Only seen in NSF so far. And its just a port.

All the haters in media, on forums, and randomly trolling gamestops everywhere can out themselves now by screaming at once: UNIMIND!!!!!

We know who you are...
Lol

#188713 Wii U won't be getting Unreal Engine 4

Posted by Socalmuscle on 31 March 2013 - 06:15 PM

Epic kinda sorts has a point about the sense it makes putting UE4 in wii u.

But only in the exact same way it doesn't make sense putting ue4 on ps4.

Ue4 is hardly an upgrade over ue3 except in a couple of areas which ultimately boil down to lighting and particles.

It was basically an engine company asking themselves what the next big thing was. They thought it was lighting and particles. In a sense, that's true.
But they way ue4 does it requires tons more power than your think for the minimal ultimate difference it makes.

The ps4 for example, while running ue4, has most of the ue4 specifics turned off. There are some working benefits over ue3, that's ptob why they aren't using 3 only. In the ps4 ue4 demo, the lighting difference is staggering in terms of how much it loses versus pc (ie: the appearance of distance, ambient particles in the air, etc. playing with how the lighting is rendered).
The ps4 version appears to have that completely turned off. Even the particle effects seem to be purely scripted, and much less dynamic. Even some reflections on the textures are gone on ps4. It actually loses quite a bit.

But the geometry and textures are similar. So it ends up looking trchnically (not speaking of art direction) not even as good as The Samaritan, which focused heavily on textures and geometry combined with precise, less dynamic, but very well chosen lighting.

Without those specific ue4 benefits, ue4 looks like... Ue3.

So Epic has a point.

But they are being hypocritical because that point very much applies to ps4 as well.

The unreal engine may actually be one of the technically lesser engines of this generation. But everyone is familiar with it.

Being that PC gaming looks poised for resurgence, it makes sense that developers will want ue4. That way they don't have to completely revamp their game to work on any of the consoles. They can simply rework features that can't be done the way epic envisioned with ue4 originally.

Ue4 on ps4 faces the same hurdles the wii u does. With one exception.

Mark rein likes Sony. But not so much Nintendo.

Seriously. That's all there is to it.

They make ue4 for x86. Ue4 for arm. Ue4 for the whacked out x86 stepchild the ps4 uses. But no Power? That's ridiculous.

Ue4 technically would run the same demo the ps4 did. (even though there were glimpses of frame rate issues in the ps4 version...)

But rein doesn't "like" Nintendo. Period. Never has.

And it seems that he's losing the tale t around him that actually made epic the monster it is now.

There's a saying about pride going before a fall. And given the rash and unprofessional nature on display last week, I'd say epic is cracking at the foundation.

#188480 Wii U won't be getting Unreal Engine 4

Posted by Socalmuscle on 31 March 2013 - 02:52 AM

reading his so called updated comments confirmes he has issues with nintendo that wont go away. so he says oh if a developers wants to make a game on unreal 4 for the Wii U they can... then he also says they can also do it for xbox 360. to me he seems like he is going out of his way to say Wii U is on same level as 360 and somewhat in the same generation.

That's exactly what he's doing.

Purposely.

He knows that the gpu is light years ahead and a true next gen unit.

He also knows the CPU has more fundamentals in common with ps4 than 360.

And he knows the wii u ram setup is just about perfect.

But he showed his true colors with his "gaffe" when he basically laughed at the wii u and did it in a way to put Nintendo down and encourage everyone there to do the same.

He only somewhat reverted to his previous stance because people thought he was very unprofessional.

The only reason that a version of ue4 that rivals the ps4 version isn't on wii u is because mark doesn't want it to happen. He thinks "fortnite" is somehow more worthwhile.

#188224 Wii U won't be getting Unreal Engine 4

Posted by Socalmuscle on 30 March 2013 - 11:11 AM

the ridiculous nature of his "next gen" comment wasn't bad enough. Now he's actively comparing wii u to Xbox 360 like saying unreal 4 would be the same on both.

I fully understand now why epic top talent has been leaving.

This is no longer a business that looks at things factually or objectively. It's essentially a "good ol' boy" doing whatever he wants because he wants to.

I guess we will see how that works out for him.

Unreal engine 3 has paid for itself many times over and now mr. Mark just wants free money from the Nintendo angle. Then he wants game debs to do the port work for him? And still charge them an ue4 license???

Idiot is going to drive the company to the ground.

He seems oblivious to the fact that other developers not stuck with legacy issues of the unreal engine are actually meeting or exceeding ue4 already.

And to be honest, ue4 looks like ue3. Just with more particles and better lighting. But only on pc. The ps4 demo showed lighting that looked zero like the pc version. The textures and geometry were there (just like ue3samaritan), but the lighting (main selling point of ue4) was completely absent. Looked like ue3 lighting.

Ue4 would run as well on wii u as on ps4 based on what was shown. If Nintendo ever needed to, they could even go the n64 ram Pak route and that would be that. But the ram isn't the issue. The MCM isn't the issue. Stupidity is.

And you can't fix stupid.

The only way to change this is for rein to step down.

Going by the rate at which epic is declining, I can see that happening at some point.

Every unreal engine iteration has been an amazing change from previous. Now, it's barely an upgrade at all.

Fox, Panta Rhei, look superior. The thing about ue4 latest demo is the theatrical sci fi art direction. But one thing I noticed on the soldier (who quickly donned a low poly mask to detract from the issue) and the infiltrator, was how seriously poor the faces and eyes looked. Like characters from an Xbox 360 gears 2 game.

It would be better for epic to make ue 4 for wii u. But they aren't. Natively. So that's that. Sad. But it's the case. I suppose we will see then what cryengine and Retro's engines can do in the hands of multiple developers.

It's almost like some companies are jealous of nintendos success and morals. So they conspire against them. Helps when you're making sweetheart deals with competitors.

#188080 Wii U won't be getting Unreal Engine 4

Posted by Socalmuscle on 30 March 2013 - 03:08 AM

Ue4: " for next gen consoles... And um... Your telephone...

But not a certain nect gen console... Because... Um... Has anyone seen cliffy b?"

No wonder everyone worth anything has left epic.

Crytek is surpassing them.

And nothing shown from ue4 even looks better than the latest ue3 demo

It sucks they are hating like that. Very unprofessional too.

A very strong anti-Nintendo statement was made there.

He never once noted specs. Because he'd get called on it but he just played it off and spun it.

Wow.

Wonder if Nintendo will license Retro's engine...

Ps4 is more powerful.

It will outperform wii u.

But it won't be by a large amount.

screen for kz4:

http://images.pushsq...46282/large.jpg

It's a major difference.

A generational leap.

PS4 is going to be great regardless of your opinion.

I agree.
In fact, I think the ps4, the new xbox, and the wii u all have much going for them.

But the actual game performance differences between each will be compareable.

Not the technical gulf there was during last gen.

Ps4 will be good. But it won't have anything to crow about.

All three systems will have great graphics, great services, etc.

But the wii u is the only one with the gamepad and the one with a company not trying to bleed your wallet for no reason.

And... Gaikai... Hopefully they have better uses for it than wasting bandwidth on probable laggy vita remote control.
