#277726 MGS 5 Ground Zeroes IGN Review

Posted by Socalmuscle on 18 March 2014 - 02:50 AM

Will wait for the full version, however this got an 8 from IGN. No surprise the PS4 version looks much better, the Xbone version is very very similar to the 360.

http://uk.ign.com/ar...d-zeroes-review

Got a surprise for you.

The ps4 version looks like a 360 game too. Both ps4 and x1 have better texture clarity from the pictures. Ps4 is 1080p so it should be the sharpest. But the poly counts are very last gen in the game. As in obviously low poly in many areas. And the area size isn't exactly huge. Nor is the draw distance. Hopefully the full game is much different and new gen only. Because this just makes me sad a little.

I'm... Disappointed. Been playing it for a couple hours now. The animation is terrific. Some of the physics as well.

But the graphics really suffer from not being new gen only. Don't know what the x1 gfx look like yet. But the ps4 version isn't anything to write home about. Tomb Raider:DE looks better.

#277644 Rare: A Kinect-less Xbox One would be a "real shame"

Posted by Socalmuscle on 17 March 2014 - 12:09 PM

Pretty sad how people just hate on tech that is actually pretty amazing. Various reasons for this such as price, unfamiliarity with the tech, don't like to learn new things, etc.

The Wii U is better for having the gamepad is has. But developers are lazy and don't want to innovate along with it. Rather than people seeing this and/or accepting this, they then tell themselves they don't want it (granted it is completely underutilized as of right now)

Kinect is amazing as well. it's accurate, consistent, and makes everything so easy. In Ryse, when you are fighting hordes of tough guys, simply shouting an auxillary comand instead of having to stop fighting and run to press a switch - feels like what gaming nowadays should be.

The only thing I understand about Kinect is that the it drives the price up. However, once you've gotten used to using it, it's VERY hard to go back to not having it. and if you've played the dance or fighting simulators, you'd actually be blown away. I was. It's very good. And eating popcorn, pizza, etc. while watching a movie or browsing movies, it's a small, but nice extra to not have to wash your hands evry time to pick up the controller and change something. You just tell the Xbox what to do.

There may be reasons to dislike the Xbox One and/or MS. But Kinect is definitely not one of them.

#277539 New pics for Arkham Knight

Posted by Socalmuscle on 21 March 2014 - 12:44 AM

Considering I've played both on PC (the first GoW came out on PC), it's not the same graphics fidelity, particularly noticeable on PCs, where the actual in-game graphics are exceedingly higher than the pre-rendered cutscenes (except for the lighting engine, which was different for pre-rendered scenes than in-game), and are running at 60fps as opposed to the cutscene's pre-recorded 30 fps.

In other words, those screenshots look like they're taken from cutscenes (except maybe the one flying over the city, though that one doesn't look too great to begin with).  The other thing to keep in mind is that developers generally use the PC footage in advertising since it always looks the best, not sure how this will pan out on the consoles against the PC version.  The consoles are obviously still a far cry from the power of a modern gaming rig.

Never played gears on pc. Or arkham. But if there is any difference, it's unnoticeable on console. On some of the images shown appear to be in-game animations, which appear the same as those in the cut scenes.

The only times I've seen game engine cut scenes look worse than in-game is when that scene is inexplicably compressed into a video format.

Ok... So now it's not UE4, which makes sense given the date they started this project.

It's a heavily modified UE3 engine.

And still looks at least as impressive as the elemental and infiltrator UE4 demos.

Being that it's not UE4, I seriously wish we could have seen this push the wii u hardware.

Blu Ray did at first too, now they run 6x but the benefit of holding so much more data paid off in the end. 4k is an obvious reason for these new discs.

This.

#276401 In defence of third party publishers

Posted by Socalmuscle on 08 March 2014 - 10:03 PM

While I admit there is a lack of effort on third parties providing lackluster efforts to the Wii U, there is evidence creeping in that despite its low install base Nintendo Wii U owners simply don't care for third party games at all or supporting the Wii U if they can afford to buy a Wii U or buy third party games.

I point the finger at all of us for failing the Wii U just as much as the corporations that either provide ports of games several years old at a full price or just don't provide enough effort separating the Wii U version out from the crowd.

My game collection mainly contains third party games such as Tekken Tag 2, Trine 2, ZombiU, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Need for Speed: Most Wanted U, deus Ex: Human Revolution: Directors Cut, Assassin's Creed III, and Batman: Arkham City: Armoured Edition. With only a small fraction such as Wind Waker HD, Nintendoland, and Super Mario 3D World coming from Nintendo itself.

I feel sometimes that I'm part of a small breed of Nintendo fans that truly put their money where their mouth is, despite me only being able to afford £40 most months. Seeing the statistics of third part multiplats on other "next generation" (they're current gen now!) consoles such as COD: Ghosts sales on PS4 and XBO compared to Wii U sales especially when back then PS4 and XBO (XBO still does) had far less sales than the Wii U is horrid. Maybe it's the marketing, but I blame the majority of Wii U owners that say "we don't want a generic FPS on our console" these people are the snobs DESTROYING Nintendo's chances at gaining third party multiplat support.

Again the publishers themselves aren't blameless, far from it. They are lazy, and wont even try risking a PS4/XBO game on the Wii U, but I do also accuse the (seeming) majority of Nintendo fans for doing as much damage, if not more.

Yes Nintendo themselves could moneyhat publishers into providing ports, but to what advantage if the money is better spent in heightening the quality of their own products if the console ends up a first party only machine? Moneyhatting only provides temporary solutions at best for the majority of cases, and really Nintendo have to concentrate their efforts on gaining non-nintendo fans and the fickle general public with better advertising geared at gaining new Nintendo console fans or making their first party games better rather than temporarily gaining a third party game through essentially bribing other companies.

I also accuse a lot of fans who can afford a Wii U but wont invest a measly £180 - £250 (compared to PS4 and XBO) on the console itself, despite plenty of games and a brilliant future lineup!

What do you guys think, are the majority of Nintendo fans (who can afford it) to blame equally if not more than third part publishers? Or am I just being a meany?

Nah. Most third parties have simply hobbled their games, released crappy last gen ports, or released games that were already available on other systems years ago.

It's pure common sense that they didn't sell.

Now. Even watch dogs is in jeapordy because who knows how long the gap is between ps4 and wii u releases.

It's a bunch of stupidity from the third parties.

There is a self fulfilling prophecy they have created. And it started wit Ubi betraying Nintendo who was counting on them. That, along with EAs withdrawal hurt consumer confidence in the platform. Combined with the subpar ports, and it's a recipe for disaster.

Wii u owners are the victims of this political crap. Not the perps. That blame is laid squarely on the shoulders of studios who treat wii u like a second class citizen and then blame the platform when consumers don't buy their uninspired steaming piles of crap.

#275757 Batman Arkham Knight revealed...No WiiU version

Posted by Socalmuscle on 04 March 2014 - 08:16 PM

Are you saying it's not a huge amount of profit on the Wii U Versions end, or all 3 consoles? To be honest, 150K is very comparable to the numbers released on PS3 and X360. When comparing the percentages against total install base. Looking at just percentages of this game across each install base, nothing hits over 2 or 3% .

So for example: 150K copies for Wii U version in a 5 mil install base is 3 percent. 3 percent of Wii U owners purchased the game. 1.56 mil copies for PS3 in a 80 mil install base is 2 percent if you round up. Similar numbers for 360.

A good marketing guy could take numbers like this and say the selling rate of the Wii U version was better than that of any other console version.

Just thought I would put it into a different context. To be honest some of these ports didn't do as bad as the dev/publishers or others say, it's just the fact that you're comparing a small puddle to a vast overflowing river.

Not to mention the 150k is because the game had already been out forever on other consoles.

Any business case made against the wii u because of that is ridiculous.

Can't stand these companies and the complete lack of common sense.

No doubt the game would sell well on them wii u -! So long as it's a NEW game and not freaking gimped.

#275627 Retro Studio: Wii U "great box to make games on." New game already in...

Posted by Socalmuscle on 04 March 2014 - 12:37 AM

I know that "feminazi" is normally used by misogynists to refer to feminists that they think have gone "too far" (which in their perspective can mean anything from demanding equal salaries for women and men to being allowed to have an advanced sex life without being called a whore). But this has nothing to do with the particular piece of Samus concept art we were looking at, that's why I asked what it was supposed to mean. And the answer I got was quite clear, right?

Lol.

No one is calling equal rights names. You're really, really reaching there.

It's the girl samus with an ugly, offbeat, somewhat creepy look in that concept art. Not to mention the Wolfenstein inspired armor... That may work for bio shock, but not this.

She's not characterized that way Nintendo's games.

A woman doesn't have to be ugly or manly or crazy to be a strong, battle hardened veteran-heck, look at Gina carano or Rhonda rousey...( nor does she have to be traditionally attractive to be sensitive or loving ). Again, the recent tomb raider reboot is a shining example of a strong woman that retains her feminine qualities. If you have a console that this game is out on, you need to play it. You'll be very pleasantly surprised. I never was a tomb raider fan. Ever. Until this. It's that good.

There are a lot of great points being discussed.

No need to get hung up on all the negative connotations you want to pretend were implied. Terms have been defined. And they aren't the far reaching, woman and all mankind hating remarks you want to pretend they are. Time to move on.

#275362 Retro Studio: Wii U "great box to make games on." New game already in...

Posted by Socalmuscle on 02 March 2014 - 10:49 AM

I liked the article but I think it could be applied to the rest of Nintendo's overlooked franchises and some of his suggestions I find questionable. For starters he's totally of the mind that Retro HAS to do the next Metroid just because they made the prime games. I love Metroid and I love the Prime trilogy but in terms of quality the Prime series had a downward curve. The first was the best, the second was a little worse, and then the third was the weakest of the bunch. A series needs to improve throughout iterations. I wouldn't mind if Retro did another Metroid but only if they actually had some really new and interesting ideas.

Another problem is he's saying Nintendo needs to try to buy up all these different people who seem to love Metroid, throw them in to a room, and they'll spit out gold. Sounds like a good idea at first, but it could also be a recipe for disaster. Having too many chefs in the kitchen, all with their own visions, is rarely a good idea. He also seems to really point out to that fanart made by someone from the Bioshock team. Yeah it's cool looking, but it looks like everything that could go wrong with Metroid. It's like Metroid meets Gears of War or something.

While I don't care AT ALL for the Bioshock style Metroid art (and it would never happen. Too feminazi), I do agree that Retro HAS to make it. They've been developing a Wii U engine from the ground up, have increased their ranks insanely, and have the muscle to make Metroid awesome on a wii U.

Look at Smash Bros. Shaping up to be insane fun, no? Sure it is. But then get critical on the graphics for a bit.

Nothing to write home about. Low poly (except perhaps the mega man and Mario models), poor textures, and overral not very technically impressive. Now imagine that game with Retro's graphical capabilities...

Metroid NEEDS to be a true new gen game. Epic, with the absolute best graphics the system can possibly generate right now. It needs to be made by folks who know the IP and have a knack for making this type of game work well.

They can even change the name of the series since "Metroid" doesn't sound like high tech sci if anymore more like an 80's "bleep bloop" sound (betting they keep the name btw, since it may be too confusing and too much trouble to rename the metroid creatures).

Retro doesn't HAVE to make it but it would be likely better off.

I don't agree with everything in the article, but most of it. He mskes great points about nintendos foolishness in choosing games to mske this gen. Also mskes a great point about timing with female protagonists.

Though I'm not sure I agree in that.

I just finished to be raider: DE and there were many powerful story elements that were made powerful by the protagonist being female.

But... I would have preferred being a male protagonist and those same elements could have been written just as powerfully that way.

However the point is made that games featuring female leads are selling and have general been extremely well received

Could have something to do with game makers breaking out of creative block while wrapping their minds around a different perspective, could be market reasons, could be all of the above and more. But it's happening.

And now is the time for the original to return to the top.

Better not be. Metroid is not going to save the Wii U, Retro should put all the mind and creativity into something awesome.

Disagree. An epic, fps with the flair of metroid and a compelling storyline setting up a new series is exactly what the wii u needs. Especially one that shows off the wii us true new generation roots.

The last thing wii u needs is another platformer.

Zelda, metroid, smash, kart, and all do well to balance out the first party offerings and create compelling reasons to game on Nintendo hardware.

Saying retro shouldn't do metroid is like saying konami should stop metal gear. Or Nintendo should stop Mario.

The wii u is in DIRE need of a hot rod metroid game right now.

#275141 Retro Studios calls Wii U a "Powerhouse" - confirms new game

Posted by Socalmuscle on 28 February 2014 - 03:59 PM

Wow. He said "powerhouse..."

Wondering if he means that in terms of comparing to the severely, horribly, handicapped and outdated wii (which was outdated on day 1) or in terms of console gaming today.

DK sure looks amazing for a platformer.

You just know they're going to kill it with Metroid. That kind of attention to detail in a Metroid FPS GAME? Yes please. Also, wonder how long they've been working on this new game with their swollen staff numbers...

So looking forward to seeing an apples to apples comparison from killer wii u games to the competition.

Interesting quote about polygon counts too...

Wonder just how many this thing can push.

#274995 whats invovative about ps4

Posted by Socalmuscle on 27 February 2014 - 04:11 PM

The Wii U has a tablet you do nothing with .

What's innovative about the Wii U?

How about the fact that it actually HAS a tablet. One that works very well in game interactions such as Batmans batarang, Sniping, off TV play, video chat, even blowing into the mic to affect game play, browsing the internet, universal remote, etc.

The only issue has been that it hasn't been utilized enough.

Then there is the fact that it has had its own social network since launch.

You missed the point, Nolly.  It's gone from 0 to more than a third of states (much more than "2") in just a few years, and the federal law against it has already been struck down by the supreme court.  The people in my state who voted against the proposed amendment were brutally demonized in a way the media would never support for any other group of people.  The only reason it's still not allowed in the other states is because of the votes of the otherwise silent majority who don't speak up outside of the confidential ballot box because, despite being a majority, broader "culture" is controlled by the people (in many or even most cases the elite minority) who are in support of overturning traditional norms as quickly as possible.  To use a crude metaphor, being against gay marriage in the US is very much like being pro-Nintendo.  Even if there are a lot of people, they're more or less afraid to/unable to speak up outside of their own bubbles because of the way the "industry" is trending.

Good post.

Someone sees past the media spoon feeding.

#272748 Anyone think X looks a bit worse compared to previous viewings of it?

Posted by Socalmuscle on 15 February 2014 - 09:43 PM

#1) the image quality due to unbelievably poor compression was severely compromised. To the point the game footage is unrecognizable from original.

#2) This wasn't even a trailer. It was just some sloppy footage thrown in. To bolster the Wii U part of the Direct, new hitch had little to show.

Not only was the footage bad and no real editing, choreography, etc. done, but it appeared like they were deliberately holding out on what we could see. Attack, attack, attack, attack, mad nauseum.  Pretty boring. But the gigantic creature and mech getting some air time was a treat. Would have been much better had they shown it in hd.

That's the thing Nintendo needs to "get."

People don't just figure (like they should) that "oh that's live stream compression chewing up the video."

They instead go "nasty gfx"

That's why Sony so carefully sent out enhanced, double resolution still images and even video of some ps4 games. Do those games look as good as the stills? Nope. But they look good. And no one cares because the original impression made my the marketing team was "Oh. My. Goodness!"

Compare to Nintendo... White screen. A half disinterested looking Iwata, very difficult to understand developers, and then blurry, grainy, pixelated low res footage.

Meh.

But then the game comes out. Different story.

On a side note, I've enjoyed iwatas quirky style that seems like a transplant from a kinder, simpler era. But I almost felt his pain watching this Direct. He was so reserved. Even for him. Not a hint of that childlike smirk, smile, or excitement. Just seemed like a beaten man. Things will turn up for Nintendo. Just hope they are soon. I want to see a genuinely excited Iwata again.
