#302427 Porhorse's Top 20 Games of All Time

Posted by BrosBeforeGardenTools on 10 November 2014 - 10:11 AM

So I had an old thread where I listed my top 20 favorite games of all-time. I tried to edit it to revive it, but my post got botched up. So I'm posting a new, updated one - some two years later. My choices:

20. Star Fox 64 (N64) - This is one game you can never play enough, despite how much you play it. It has villains which you love to hate, and great missions. It has it all.

19. Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA) - Short, but a great game. A decent level of depth is achieved in the 3 hours it takes to beat this. Also features the original Metroid (NES) when you're done. Add to that multiple ending screens, and you have 19.

18. Super Mario RPG (SNES) - The best Mario RPG in my opinion. This game oozes quality, and has great graphics and interesting scenarios.

17. Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2 (Dreamcast) - Two great Sonic games that can only be linked together. Say what you want about them, but these two are some of the best in 3D Sonics. Chao are also fun, when you get tired of the game.

16. Megaman X (SNES) - A must-play game. Easy to learn but hard to master.

15. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - A great Zelda game. Not the best. This game isn't overrated, it deserves its praise, but barely so. Still a fine game featuring many dungeons and an engrossing adventure.

14. Final Fantasy VI (SNES) - A memorable game with great pixel art and memorable characters. The opera scene goes down as one of the greatest game scenes of all-time.

13. The Last Story (Wii) - Once you finished the campaign, you had a whole other game to play - the online.

12. Toejam & Earl (Sega Genesis) - A great game that is wacky fun with a friend. You play as one of two aliens and must advance through a dangerous world while using powerups.

11. Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis) - It's hard to pick a choice between Sonic and Mario. I prefer Sonic as a whole. It's a shame some of his later titles were botched.

10. Halo: Combat Evolved (XBox) - A great game for its time with mechanics that are still good. The campaign and multiplayer were fun for their time, especially fighting Hunters and Capture the Flag, respectively. Unfortunately, unlike most Nintendo and old Square games, it hasn't aged well.

9. Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention (PS Vita) - I'm not sure what's funnier... this game's humor, or its attempts at it. With about 60 hours or more of gameplay total, abundant humor, and a good battle system, this game is incredible.

8. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GameCube) - The music was epic, and so was the game. The transfer between Light and Dark world made the game. The game did a great job of making you feel alone.

7. Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (PS1) - An unexpected entry, Abe's Exoddus is a fun and weird game that, unlike the one before it, allowed you to save anywhere.

6. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64) - An innovative game. Playing it gives me thrills and chills. The town is well-done. And if you like difficulty, some of the moments in this game make it the game for you.

5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES) - A Link to the Past features a funny and robust Dark World, cool music, and cool dungeons.

4. Super Mario World (SNES) - A simple game, but a good one with nice features - like the Halloween edition.

3. Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - This game featured splendid graphics and fine gameplay. You couldn't help but laugh at some of the character designs. This is the best Donkey Kong.

2. Super Metroid (SNES) - THE best Metroid game. This game is an absolute classic. Barely beaten by number 1.

1. Golden Sun & Golden Sun: The Lost Age (GBA) - Golden Sun delivered in almost every way. It's a cool game now, but it was an even more extraordinary game then. Breathtaking and with great characterization, you can't afford to miss it. Its sequel Golden Sun: The Lost Age, I am also listing - it's an incredible game, one almost as good as the first before it.

What games on my list haven't you played?

#302376 Miyamoto says they focused too much on two screens

Posted by BrosBeforeGardenTools on 09 November 2014 - 02:44 PM

http://nintendoevery...-enough-on-nfc/

I actually disagree with Miyamoto for once. The two screens and the lack of NFC was never really the main problem of the Wii U. A lack of good software starting out was.

If anything, I want them to focus MORE on multiple screens, eventually having more than one Gamepad usable on one system for two, or even three or four players.

#302365 Majora's Mask was in development as soon as OOT 3D was completed

majoras mask is the best Zelda game

Fixed.

#302303 New 3DS Specs

Posted by BrosBeforeGardenTools on 08 November 2014 - 07:33 AM

It's frustrating there isn't any teardown of the new 3ds yet... it's already out in Japan and coming to Australia this month. Sucks, we may have to wait until it releases in NA for someone to figure out the specs. The CPU speed doubling seems adequate given the test videos of loading times, doubling of the RAM makes sense and VRAM too. GPU , I dunno.

Well, I don't think there's any information to say the GPU itself has been improved. My guess is that Nintendo was being smart and realized the GPU wasn't the bottleneck. For all we know, doubling the GPU could have made less than a 50% speed improvement even.

#302287 New 3DS Specs

Posted by BrosBeforeGardenTools on 08 November 2014 - 05:21 AM

I looked through the various leaks and they almost all say the new 3DS will have double the RAM, from 128MB to 256MB, the same GPU, and either 2x the clock speed or 2x the cores - this is the only thing they disagree on. It's also said that the new 3DS will have an extra 4MB of special RAM that they think might be used for video RAM, which would boost it from 6MB to 10MB, giving you an actual graphics boost without ever touching the GPU.

Either way, I think these specs are just about correct given the severe loading time decrease reported about the new 3DS. Should these new specs be correct, I can easily see in-game performance being 50% better over the old 3DS.

One of the several specs reports: http://www.rllmukfor...-spec-revealed.

#302221 Making a video game

Posted by BrosBeforeGardenTools on 07 November 2014 - 09:08 AM

Now for making your first video game, you really need to keep it simple. Keep it 2D, go with a program like Scirra Construct 2 or Game Maker Studio, and make it for PC. Then later you can move onto compilers and like C++, or just make a 3D game, and make it for PC or other systems.

Art programs I recommend (though I'm bad at art):

Ms paint
Photoshop
Gimp
Blender (for 3D)

Game engines I recommend:

Scirra Construct 2
Game Maker Studio
Unity (bit harder)
Unreal Engine (bit harder)

You don't have to believe me that Scirra Construct 2 and Game Maker Studio are good. Just google it and try them, for a few days. Read the help files and try to make a 2D platformer or bouncing ball game.

Game I made: m93gas.jpg

Controls A key Arrow keys, needs Windows PC to run, unzip and click on something like agent light.exe

#301936 Looking at the whole Saturn thing again...

Posted by BrosBeforeGardenTools on 05 November 2014 - 03:52 AM

who are you people
why is this happening

why is everything just ryudo talking about old things and sorceror posting gifs and porridge making tons of threads

wii u video game system .com

GIFS are funny. Sorceror is a good jokester, that never takes things to heart. I haven't seen him post many gifs, but I explained the reason for you.

Ryudo is nostalgic. It's something we've grown to live with. He has very good tastes, and those tastes are old school games and systems.

I create threads because without them, there would be a serious dry spell and no discusson. Also like Ryudo said, I sometimes get things off my chest.

How you managed that opening post without ever saying CAPU once is beyond me.

Oh god. Look what you made me do. I had to create a thread on me and capu.

#301935 Nintendo Searching for Lead Graphics Architect - The Future Awaits

Posted by BrosBeforeGardenTools on 05 November 2014 - 02:36 AM

I guess. If the next generational leap is as big as this last one then I can't see it getting much better though.

As soon as system power becomes negligible, I think it might actually work in Nintendo's favor. I could be wrong though...

#301916 its okay porridge

I'd say I'm doing pretty well considering one of the closest people to me died three weeks ago roughly and I became scorned by half the internet that isn't WUF over something that involved a dream of mine.
