#305274 Digital Foundry : Captain Toad 60fps

Posted by Scumbag on 13 December 2014 - 02:58 PM

The game is obviously running on the Mario 3d World engine and since that was 720p they probably wanted 60fps over a higher resolution, as it should be. And what a flawless framerate it is.

Nintendo is still making fun, consistent games today as they were all those years ago.

http://www.eurogamer...reasure-tracker

"At a glance, Captain Toad shares much with Super Mario 3D World - as it should, considering it shares its technical underpinnings with the Wii U classic.

There's a series of well-lit, nicely modelled stages that double down on its predecessor's aesthetic, utilising all of the tricks that Nintendo has picked up since transitioning to HD development.

As in Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad delivers a 1280x720 image with limited edge smoothing - the game is certainly crisp and colourful but would definitely benefit greatly from improved anti-aliasing, as many edges completely lack any sort of smoothing - particularly in stages with darker colours.

Still, with the simple and clean artwork here, image quality is perfectly acceptable and aliasing does little to spoil an otherwise gorgeous game. We would love to have seen support for 1080p a la Smash Bros, but clearly that wasn't in the cards.

Much of Treasure Tracker's beauty stems from its simple yet brilliant visual design, which sees a series of nicely detailed, Mario-flavoured stages transposed over colourful backgrounds. It's all rather whimsical, but beautifully realised, with stages often resembling small floating models that you could almost reach out and touch. With the focus on smaller maps this time around, the designers are able to include more detail per block, giving the world a richly textured feel.

Every edge is beautifully smoothed off and everything just fits together into a cohesive whole that - aliasing aside - feels almost pre-rendered at points"

#305156 Mario Maker Analysis

This looks a whole lot better than the e3 version now that we can see the other art styles they added. Do we know if there are any more to art styles to be confirmed or is this all of them?

Anyway this game looks like it has so much potential for people who are creative, the idea of linking levels together to making worlds is really exciting and I hope it's implemented into the final game.

If you can upload and download levels online then this is a day one purchase! If I had actual talent in level editors then it'd be day one even if it didn't have level sharing but sadly little big planet has shown me I have no such talent haha.

#304278 Thoughts on Smash Bros. 3ds vs. Wii U

Posted by xile6 on 02 December 2014 - 05:14 PM

I got both.

Ended up getting the 3ds ver a week after launch. I was unsure if i wanted it.

but once i got it and started to play it was pretty cool to have smash on the go.

Then the wii u ver came out. the upgraded graphic where nice.

having both games is pretty cool i get to pick and choice if i wanna play at home or on the go.

Other then that its just a cool game overall on either system.

I've been enjoying the 3DS one more. Little things such as custom controls saving and the color of my character in the selection screen also saving make it easier for me to jump in and play. Plus, the portability aspect wins for me. The Wii U version is fine, but I find myself playing the handheld one more.

I think both versions pushed their systems. Smash Wii U being one of the only 1080p 60fps games on the Wii U, and certainly the only 8 player 1080 60 game on next-gen. Smash 3DS is just impressive that it doesn't feel stripped down, it has all the same characters, almost as many stages, etc. You know a game is pushing the system when it has to RESTART to exit the game.

I feel like Sakurai and his team have done an incredible job in the time they had to create some wonderful games.

I think smash 3ds deserves more credit. It is stunning to me. Smash on the go. It is almost perfect to me.

So did I get my money's worth out of my steering wheel and stand setup with 'Forza Motorsport 5'? Watch and find out!

***AUTO-MERGED: Destiny Review! (9/23/14)***

Yup, I caved into the hype and gave 'Destiny' a whirl. So, how did it fare against all that hype that got non-believers like me to buy it?

***AUTO-MERGED: Let's Play with Jeremy! (10/7/14)***

I bring my first guest onto the Xbox "Hut" show, and allow him to try his skills at Forza Motorsport 5... with my steering wheel setup!  He's consequently also the first dude to come on my show as a guest!

As a player who's been using a controller, how well does he fare with a force feedback steering wheel?  Let's watch and find out!

***AUTO-MERGED: Forza Horizon 2 Review! (10/21/14)***

There's nothing quite like the unrealism of an arcade racer. But what if that was layered with sim racing characteristics, placed in a highly detailed and large open world, and spattered with lots of cars and various activities? What you have is this.

Also, my British apparently degrades drastically on 3 hours of sleep...

I'm buying the characters I like because they look cool. Probably won't use them after the first time for the lolz.

#296945 Wii U, my home of gaming

Posted by MarvelofMan on 26 August 2014 - 08:29 AM

I have owned it for a short while - games wise i own Zombi U, Mario Kart 8, Nintendo Land, Super Mario Bros U, Sonic All Star Racing Transformed and Tekken Tag.

I plan on clearing my other systems out and investing that into the Wii U and 3ds. No doubt sticking to Nintendo. Great to play Wii U alone, with the girlfriend, with family and will give my son a tonne of memories when he is old enough to join in.

Also loving the fact everyone..yes everyone i met so far has been so laid back and cool to talk with. On Xbox Live or PSN i have never felt really that comfortable interacting with other players.

You look and sound like a Luitenant I used to have. Of course, Hes much older now, but the resemblence is rather striking.

What you are talking about doesnt have anything to do with the cloud, um, beyond the servers comprising the 'cloud' storing and sharing the data.

It is, however, at least from your description a fine example of heuristics in videogames. Something thats been around actually, a very long time, but, unfortunately, is often ignored in favour of simper, faster, cheaper streamlined solutions.

Its also a viable use for an evaluation of playability.

Heather Desurvire, Martin Caplan, and Jozsef A. Toth wrote an excellent peice on it back in 2004.

(
Love the stuff, but has nothing to do with the cloud, beyond transfer of data, and server processors processing the recorded data (offline), and then sending the finished product out.

The cloud has become a joke because Microsoft has marketed it as something the cloud simply can not do, because internet technology itself is not advanced enough to make it possible, nor does it look to be any time soon without a major breakthrough and paradigm shift in technology, Mictrosoft has attempted to promote the services impressive bandwidth, which is how much information can be moved at once (Like how many people a bus can hold), which is deceitful because bandwidth isnt really the limiting factor on realtime cloud processing for game use. Latency is, which takes into account how fast the data can electronically travel, in my example, that would be how fast the bus can drive.

Thing is, I get exactly what you're talking about, but it's actually not the same topic (despite how it seems).  Giving AI human-like behavior is not the same as adapting to it.  In other words, the cloud is the only way to receive 100s, if not 1000s, (maybe even 10,000+) player scripts uploaded from their gameplay, have a program simply analyze "common" behaviors, and then have the AI "react" to this common behavior.  This cannot be done on a single local machine because the processing power required to create an AI that dynamically adapts on the spot to a single player is WAY beyond the power of a 6-core mobile CPU that is also running the system itself.

In other words, cloud computing IS required, and it's WHY many movies/books employ "hive minds" or "overlords" or some other form of "cloud" thinking.  The best way to manage how your forces (in this case, CPU enemies) react to another force (human players) is to cluster the data, and update all entities (CPU enemies).

Simply put, you're talking about individual AI becoming more life-like and reactionary, I'm talking about adapting simple AI to react to human behaviors.

The Cloud. The modern version of "blast processing"

I get the feeling you didn't watch it, you don't seem like the type to want to jump into an announced stereotype, hahaha

i'm very tempted to get the upcoming Madden bundle.... Forza and then the next AC when it comes out. Madden sounds really cool bc it is supposed to actually teach you about the schematics of the game.

I'm not big on sports games, but I DO get that they're advancing the tech their thanks to the current generation of technology!

That's probably more like what a normal collection should be like.

I have 5 games. 5. I don't care if that's closer to a normal collection, i want to steal all the games i've seen in this thread. ;_;

Sadly, mine is no where near as large.

1. Mario Kart 8

2. Wind Waker HD

3. Pikmin

4. Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap

5. Yoshi's Island

6. Mighty Switch Force 1-2

Mario Kart 8 is the only one that is a physical copy, but I have a tone of DS/3DS games. They rest are from the eshop.
