#36282 Wii U Must Support An Equivalent of Direct X 11/Open GL 4.2

Posted by Hyawatta on 14 October 2011 - 11:30 AM

If you look up the specs for any next-generation game engine you will see that there is at least one thing they all have in common, Direct X 11/Open GL 4.2 support. The only other major commonality seems to be a focus on multiprocessor (around 20 processors) support. Rallying support for an equivalent of Direct X 11/Open GL 4.2 functionality is likely much more feasible than asking Nintendo to add a 20-core processor to the Wii U.

If the Wii U releases without support for an equivalent of DirectX 11/OpenGL 4.2, then it would be in a similar situation as the 3DS releasing without a second slide pad. Except I don't think an expansion would be able to fix it.

It seems fairly obvious that the next generation development efforts are based around DirectX 11/OpenGL 4.2 functionality (Feel free to include any engines that I may have left out):

Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4
id Software's id Tech 6
Crytek's CryENGINE 4
DICE's Frostbite 3
Techland's Chrome Engine 6
CD Projekt's RED Engine 2
Capcom's MT Framework 3
Square-Enix's Luminous Engine
Valve's Source Engine

I can’t emphasize enough how critical this is. As long as the Wii U can support DirectX 11/OpenGL 4.2 level functionality and features, it should be able to compete with the new systems that Microsoft and Sony will eventually release. Of course the Wii U can run ports of games developed for the PS3 and 360, but the Wii U's ability to run the next-gen engines will secure its position as a viable console for developers to release their future multiplatform games onto during the upcoming generation of consoles.

If the Wii U can handle the next-gen game engines that require a DirectX 11/OpenGL 4.2 level of functionality and features, then it will enjoy the multiplatform support that the PS3 and 360 had. If the Wii U cannot run the next-gen engines, then it will suffer from having a similar level of multiplatform support that the Wii had.

#14042 the dream i had about the Wii U

Posted by nintendo3DS on 12 July 2011 - 05:41 PM

I had a similar dream about the 3DS, before it came out.

So In my dream, I was in bed. Then usually where my DSi was, the 3DS was there! As I glazed my eyes on the most beautiful thing I've ever laid my eyes on (technology wise) as I went to grab it, I woke up. :D
I didn't even have the chance to play it. Posted Image

Okay, so one day in my dreams, i dreamt about me getting a Wii U.

In the dream i walked into a store and saw the boxes of the Wii U`s and i grabbed one. I walk up to the cashier and asked is this really the Wii U? The cashier replied saying that this was a beta of the wii u (?) i bought it anyway and got on my motorbike. For some odd reason, my bike was messed up so it started up and moved really quick. I couldn't control it and then it crashed into a pole and I died.

Then i had a spazz attack and i woke up.

wow, what a weird dream...

:)

#35870 Not-clickable sliders, an issue?

Posted by Nintendo.fan on 11 October 2011 - 09:08 AM

definitely not. The buttons to the equipment will be subistituted by the touchscrenn so now there will be more buttons. The buttons without assignment have the same assignment that the normal game.

#27124 Mario Kart 8/Wii U

Sounds brilliant, but Mario Kart 7 isn't even out yet, and your already making ideas for Mario Kart 8? Bravo my friend.

#32406 Wii U Wishlist

I'd like to ,just as a side note, say i am also against Nintendo making another Metroid game with a team like team ninja (Retro studios made the Prime trilogy but they know how to keep and improve on already established elements... like samus being an emotionless killing machine , which ninja didnt keep true to metroid at all.)

Sorry... anyway i'd like to see the usuals to keep nintendo where they need to be. But a new Fzero could easily be made for WiiU (and 3ds) , along with All those old nintendo series that could be updated and improved but only exist now as old games (Ice climbers, Mach Rider, Yoshi, etc...)as downloadables , A modern Starfox with online community/ customization/ lots of easter eggs like SNES starfox.  Monster hunter also seems to fit very well with the WiiU and a physics based puzzler seems to also fit well on the console. A 3d Donkey kong adventure and although im not a fan MarioParty looks fitting too. Maybe a Pikmin with competitive game modes (seeing as pikmin at its most basic is a strategy game) and.... i dont know.....throw in a mariokart, Smashbros, side scrolling Yoshi , Mario RpG , Custom Robo, and downloadable Earthbound. And missle command

Sleepy, I hate to say this, but you are wrong about Samus/Metroid on 2 parts
1. The current head of metroid wrote the story of Other M, not Team Ninja. It's his fault that Team Ninja gets blame.
2. How did you get the idea that Samus was an emotionless killer? The only instances of character development for Samus in the timeline prior to Other M was Metroid 2, where instead of obeying her superiors, she keeps alive one of the most deadly creatures to ever exist. That's not an emotionless killer. That's someone who gave up on her job to play mommy. That can not be denied.

#32092 Kingdom Hearts 3 On PS3 And WiiU?

Kingdom Hearts 3? Come on, I'm sure you guys can wish for something better, like a Kindom Hearts trilogy on the Wii U.

Not meaning to sound rude, but one of Sony's key franchises from 3rd parties is KH. So it's not likely to be coming to WiiU.

That doesn't matter since Sqaure Enix can do what they want. And the there have been 4 games on Nintendo same as Playstation so it's quite likely Kingdom Hearts 3 will be Wii U exclusive considering Dream Drop Distance leads into it and that's on the Nintendo 3DS.

Final Fantasy is not relevenevent in a discussion about Kingdom Hearts. Nintendo has yet to see a solid kingdom hearts title hit their systems.

But they're talking really big about Dream Drop Distance, as if its on par with the numbered games.

Wow...how was the Mother series NOT on that list? :/

EDIT: I voted for a 3rd Chibi Robo game. :L

#36298 Sony has annoyed me yet again.

Posted by Wertville on 14 October 2011 - 12:55 PM

I agree with your post, apart from that point. The 3DS hasn't exactly sold fine without a second circle pad, which is why Nintendo have announced the slider pad add on. If the 3DS was doing fine I doubt that Nintendo would have felt the need to make it.

Except it was Capcom that asked them to make it... Well, that's at least what all signs point to. The Classic Controller Pro was made for Monster Hunter Tri, so it makes sense for Capcom to want the same for the 3DS system.

The reason the 3DS didn't sell fine (as I don't think it really can't be called 'Selling Poorly' right now) was due to the lack of games, anti-3D journalism and the price. 2 out of 3 are currently non-issues, and this November solves the most prominent one.

You're saying the Vita is bad? I'm pretty sure you haven't seen what's really in this portable.

-PS3 Graphics

- Messaging System

-Dual Analog Sticks

-2 Touch Screens

-Cross Game Voice Chat

-3G

-MULTI Touch Screen

-Bluetooth

-GPS

- 4 Core Arm Cortex-A9 MPCore

-Region Free

-640 RAM

-Facebook,Twitter,Skype, and FourSquare

-Adobe Flash

-Markerless AR and WWAR

-Email

And so much more. Just sayin'

Well...I'll give you more facts that you've left out.

PS3 Graphics are rather hard to see on a screen that size.

Dual Analog Sticks aren't a huge deal. The DS/3DS/PSP sold just fine without them.

The second touch screen looks hugely unnecessary, like they taped two iPhones together.

Voice chat could come to the 3DS without much of an issue.

The 3G is hindered by a 20 MB download limit, and it costs $60 per 100 hours...and did I mention it's hosted by AT&T?

Yay, Multi Touch Screen! ...what's the point? You have two analog sticks, a d-pad, four buttons, and a back touch screen...it most likely won't get used usefully in many games.

What good would Bluetooth do? (Not trying to slam it, but I really can't see the use here)

Most people have a GPS on their phone, or have bought one already...the battery on it wouldn't make it worthwhile either.

Most developers don't like their product being region free, as they lose money when consumers all flock for the cheapest release.

Facebook, and Twitter could come to the 3DS without any issues. I'm fairly certain Skype is coming to the 3DS soon...and I have no idea what FourSquare is.

Alright, you've got me, the inclusion of Adobe Flash is pretty cool. But once again, nothing any other system couldn't do without an update.

Markerless AR could be done on the 3DS with just a system update...and what the crap is WWAR?

I can access my email from my 3DS through the browser just fine.

And by so much more, I take it you mean...

Three to Five hour battery life...so long as the sound is mute, brightness is on the lowest setting, wireless functions are off, and you're not doing anything on top of that.

The better games (Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Marvel VS Capcom) will be $60.

The system has no internal memory, so you're required to pay for a $30 memory card.

The system takes 2 hours and 40 minutes to recharge by USB cable. If you want a AC adapter for it, that costs $40 in the form of a charging cradle.

There is backwards compatibility...but you have to pay an extra fee for something that should be there in the first place.

What's the point of having those awesome specs if I have to be near a charging point every hour?

TL;DR: The Vita is 5 years ahead of its time, and that isn't a good thing. I for one, will not be buying one unless the price of everything it has drops significantly.

(And, sorry for the long post.)

Oh, and quote Chris Norden. “Performance (of the Vita) is not as good as PS3. We can tell you they don’t run at that speed (1.5GHz) — just for short times, like sub-second times. The reason is heat dissipation. All modern processors change the clock speed continuously depending on what you’re doing… This happens at sub-second intervals. There’s some pretty impressive stuff that looks kind of like PS3 if you look at it.”
