#317361 Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem - Maiko Character Trailer

Does this mean the US version willbe a blank screen the whole game?

The character will be a boy in the US version.

Either that or she'll be wearing a burka.

#317353 Thoughts on Linkle

Posted by CUD on 27 November 2015 - 05:56 AM in General Gaming

Well what would changing the gender of Link achieve? He has always been male so why change him to female? This is why it comes across as nothing more than a novelty. Giving an option is different though because more choices are always better than less choices.

The difference between a female Link and Linkle is that they seem to be two separate characters.

Also Linkle with no sword would be dumb, are we gonna have the Master Crossbow?

Link isn't just one character though. I think Waller covered it in their post:

Linkle being the protagonist of a mainline Zelda =/= Linkle being Link.

Either way, Link as a character is not defined by his gender, so I don't know what your problem is here. It's not the same situation as in, say, Mario suddenly turning into a woman, because Mario in every game is the same entity while most Zelda games have a different Link.

Since Link is a different character in each game it's not changing the character but rather introducing a new one that's a different gender. It doesn't really need to achieve anything, does it? I wouldn't think it needs to achieve anything just like Link being male doesn't achieve anything, it's just a design choice. Is it a novelty in a game like Infamous First Light where you play as a female character instead of male as in previous games? No because it's a new character and a new story.

Giving an option would be good but I don't see your point with "more choices is better than less choices" when only being able to play as a female character is the same amount of choice we had before.

I'm not so sure that a crossbow would be worse than a sword, different sure but they could pull still pull it off.

...How? Literally nothing changes. All Nintendo has to do is allow you to pick your gender when you pick your name. Sure they could have a proper character customization thing, but having any changes to the story would be completely optional depending on how it is written (for example: in Twilight princess Telma's flirting will work though a little scandalous, but the scene where Link and Mayor Bo share knowing glances while Ilia yells at them would work better if the mayor and Ilia's genders were reversed). But literally 95% of all Zelda games' stories work just as well as is if you pretend Link was female.

Maybe you can have a story where Link and Linkle are fraternal twins and the one you choose becomes the hero while the other takes on NPC roles throughout the story. (Imagine a conversation between Link and Linkle)

I agree that nothing changes. I was responding to Hunter's suggestion for playing as both characters or incorporating co op into the game. Having optional genders will change very little but including two playable characters in a 3D LoZ game seems like a more difficult task.

A main-series Zelda game with Link and Linkle would be cool. You can switch between them whenever you want and have co op too.

A game with both of them would be interesting but seems like a considerably more difficult concept to pull off so I'm not so sure they'd go that route.

If it isn't a part of the gameplay or plot then what's the point? It won't bring anything new to the game and is nothing more than a novelty. I think a male/female option is best for everyone since Link has always been intended as an extension of the player (although he has become more characterised in recent years). Let me be clear that I am talking more about a female version of Link and not Linkle, Linkle looks like she will have her own character traits and is not just a female Link.

If they want to make a game with Linkle then so be it, I don't think it will ruin the game unless you didn't get to use a sword.

Well why is Link male in LoZ games when it doesn't affect the gameplay or plot? Why not just say he's gender neutral or gender fluid elf-kin? Gender is very rarely a decision that affects gameplay and story, it's purely a design choice that the developers are free to make and that doesn't make it a novelty just because it's different. I mean, if Link being male was never a novelty then why is it suddenly a novelty when Link is a female?

I haven't played Skyward Sword which I hear there is a bit more characterisation given to Link but other than that I don't recall Link having much of a personality and since Link isn't the same character in each game the character from one game doesn't even make a difference to a new Link. So since Link doesn't have much of a character I'm not so sure that a female Link would be so different other than appearance, furthermore what difference is there really to a female Link and Linkle? Since Link changes from game to game so can the character of Linkle.

I wouldn't even say that a game with Linkle as the protagonist where she doesn't have a sword would ruin the game, definitely different but I can't see how that alone could ruin it.

Yeah but turning Link into a girl really is just for the sake of it unless it is a big part of the plot.

However, give people an option to choose. I don't want to be forced to play as a female Link but I'm sure some people out there would like it if they didn't have to play as a male link.

Why does Linkle's gender need to be a big part of the plot when Link's gender never has been?

Giving people the option to choose will keep people happy but the devs should be free to make Linkle the protagonist of a game without people thinking it's somehow going to ruin the game.

Soon people will demand a Caitlyn Jennar link

They'll probably just insist that Linkle and Link are both trans until everyone accepts it and if you deny it you're a bigot.

Finally getting a female version of link and people still find ways to moan and groan. Gamer Gaters were hoping Link in early Zelda U footage was indeed female... which we know is not the case. Now with Linkle coming to Hyrule Warriors those same people are complaining she is too much like Link. LOL. Can't have it both ways.

Speaking for myself, the name I don't mind and the design from the early art has greatly been greatly improved. Her move sets look fun and should be a great addition to HW Legends and HW on Wii U.

Not so sure about the GamerGaters part. I've seen more complaints coming from anti-GamerGate and just general Zelda fans from the Zelda Informer facebook page. The only complaints I have seen from people I know to be associated with GamerGate are regarding Linkle's name.

How would you feel about Linkle being the protagonist of a main series LoZ game?

More characters more variety. Problem? Answer none. Those complaining need to be slapped. Game is offering more replay ability.

How would you feel about Linkle being the protagonist of a main series LoZ game? Some people were saying they would only want Link to be a male but they'd be fine if they gave the player the option between Linkle and Link.

I get that they're just making a joke but they had to make Link look more feminine to do so.

Here's a pic of Link and Linkle from Hyrule Warriors side-by-side:

Link looks much more masculine in the actual game.

I'm pretty sure most of you here have already heard that Linkle will be a new character in Hyrule Warriors. I've seen a lot of mixed opinions on Linkle. So I was curious to see what people though here.

Most people seemed to dislike her name but I don't really have a problem with it or her design.

Do you like or dislike Linkle? Would you like to see Linkle (or another female protagonist) in a main series LoZ game?

Now they've gone too far. You cannot edit boob size in the localised versions.

Seems like an even more unnecessary change than the revealing clothing you could choose to wear.

#317185 What games would make the NX launch successful?

maybe for sega fanboys like you!

People keep saying Zelda will end up on NX but I don't think it will. Although a Zelda at launch would be beneficial.

Maybe they'll do a Twilight Princess and release it on Wii U and NX.

Soul Calibur 6

Sonic Adventure 3

Virtua Fighter 6

House of the Dead 5

NFL 2k17

Power Stone 3

Skies of Arcadia 2

Sega Rally Championships

Super Mario Next

Madden

NBA

Waverace

Burnout Reboot

Metroid Prime 4

There the greatest launch since Dreamcast.

With that many Sega titles you'd think it was the Sega NX. If only, if only...

Do you have any other World of Nintendo figures? I ordered the Metroid one last week. From what I've seen, most of the WoN figures aren't that high quality compared to other companies out there so I'm not sure that I'd want Samus since the Figma Samus is a lot better.. Although the Figma is the Other M style Varia suit while the WoN one is Metroid Prime but it's not much of a difference anyway and even then the quality of the Figma is considerably higher. The Metroid figure (if you can call it that) was the only one that I really wanted from WoN.

Anywho, do you plan on opening them or do you collect them boxed?

#317152 Xenoblade Chronicles X - Costume changes for Western Release + Discussion

Sex and sexy characters in games is positive in general, unless it's out of context. Having your characters run around half naked while trying to fight aliens really destroys the mood and feeling of a game. So this is definitely an improvement.

Well these were optional costumes, I don't think they improved the characters stats and were purely aesthetic so having the option of wearing them if you so choose would be better than not having that option at all if you ask me. If devs want to keep a serious tone then they can choose not to put such costumes in the game at all or just make them unlockable, even better way of maintaining that tone would be to make the costumes unlockable after the first playthrough.

Let's also consider US state laws vastly vary for legal ages. Some 18 some 17 some 16. Nothing is 13.  To avoid any controversy they had to edit it esp for concerned US parents. Called localization for a reason,to make a certain game fit that market as much as they can without ruining the vision of the game. I don't want to see a sexualized child of any age fiction or not. I mean If I made game with a toddler in a bikini being sexualized be just as revolting. If Elma gets censored then yeah Treehouse and 8-4 need a swift kick in the teeth as for spoiler reasons I can't say there would be zero reason for it.

13 is the technical age of consent in Japan tho also technically it's 18.

I'm not sure that those laws would necessarily apply since she's not naked or in a sex scene even, it would definitely be more acceptable for this in Japan than the West but is it still the consent laws that apply to fiction such as this? I'm not so sure about that.

I do think the much easier solution would be to change the age of the character to something like 18 for Western audiences.

#317129 Xenoblade Chronicles X - Costume changes for Western Release + Discussion

Unless your name is Jared Fogle it's revolting to see children in outfits like that. Western looks better.

Yes she is 13 even in the western version confirmed today despite earlier reports.

The outfits were overly sexual but I suppose that was the point of them. I do quite like the new ones except for those shorts... They seem out of place to me.

Anime (and Japanese anime styled games like this) character ages are often hard to tell from appearances. I'd say the character looks older than 13. What if they changed the age to 21 but kept the appearance the same? Would it still be an issue?

Best image I could find comparing anime character ages:

I'd have no problem if they left the costumes in the game, it's fiction and not full nudity on a body that doesn't look like a child's so not really an issue to me.

#317126 Xenoblade Chronicles X - Costume changes for Western Release + Discussion

Posted by CUD on 30 October 2015 - 05:42 PM in Wii U Games and Software

If this is more suitable to be merged with the official Xenoblade thread then please do so, I was curious as to what people here thought not only regarding this but also on the lingerie costumes being removed from Fatal Frame for Wii U. I can't really think of other examples from other companies or which company in particular is responsible for making these decisions so I don't want to criticise Nintendo for what may not be their choice since it's probably more to do with the EU/NA rating system.

Anywho, just wondering your thoughts on this? Should we be able to use the same costumes as the original release? Is this a big deal or not an issue for you? Are you disgusted that a 13 year old character is wearing this?

Personally I think we should get the same costumes as the original release. Sure she's a young character but that's how they designed the game, I can't see people actually getting off to this stuff anyway... I've seen people saying that only pedophiles would want this in the game and similar things but I have seen a number of people against the decision also so at least there's somewhat of a discussion around the issue going on.

#317084 Fatal Frame Has Zelda and Samus Costumes

They had to in order to release the game in North America, and that's why we have Zelda/Samus clothes in the first place.

Yeah, because there are no scantily clad characters allowed in games in the US... Seriously, there wasn't nudity was there? What's the big deal?
