The original actually already has a gyroscope!!!! The camera is the only new feature.
I'm pretty sure it didn't. Apple first introduced gyroscopes to their products with the iPhone 4, which was announced a few months after the iPad.

Wait... If iPods didn't have gyroscopes until the 4th generation of iPhone, how does my 1st generation touch tell up from down??? Unless my brain was the one who turned and stretched those webpages sideways, I'm certain that there was some sort of gyro in the old ones :/
That's that accelerometer. To be honest, I'm not sure what the difference between accelerometer and gyroscopes are though.

OooooH, ok. I think they do the same thing in different ways. Don't ask me how, though... I've only taken grade 11 physics :s
