I heard a lot of discussion since the PS4 announcement, with the PS4 being x86 (64-bit).

Deciding to take a visit to the flash site (r.i.p mobile flash,) and it said I was running a 32-bit system.

Is this the answer?

x86 is 32 bit..... x64 is 64 bit

x64 is more of a buzzword.
It's still based on the (80)x86 architecture.
It's still x86 at its core.

Random pointless information™

PPC is better than x86 because x86 has useless junk clogging it up making it slower than all balls in winter.

64 bit is not really necessary for the Wii U since it only uses 2GB of RAM, when you want to use more than 4GB of RAM then 64 bit will be needed and the PS4 uses 8GB, so that makes sense. 32 bit versus 64 bit is not really exciting, except for the RAM usage (and some other small things that are not really important for consoles). The only issue it could present is ports from the PS4 to the Wii U.

And I want to emphasize on the x64 term, x86 can be 32 or 64 bits, x64 is just a marketing thing.

assuming we are talking about whats usually talked about, the front side bus size, all ppc750's used by nintendo have a 60x 64 bit front side bus.

Nes was 8 bit, snes 16, n64 64, gamecube 64, wii 64, wii u 64.

64 bit is not really necessary for the Wii U since it only uses 2GB of RAM, when you want to use more than 4GB of RAM then 64 bit will be needed and the PS4 uses 8GB, so that makes sense. 32 bit versus 64 bit is not really exciting, except for the RAM usage (and some other small things that are not really important for consoles). x64 refers to a processor with the AMD64 extensions to the x86 instruction set. The only pure x64 platform is IA64, but it is not code compatible with x86 at all and requires a different HAL and Kernel to run. It isn't very popular.

Also, x64 has other improvements over 32 bit other than just access to more memory. The expanded FSB allows for more access lanes into system RAM as well as reduced communication latency between CPU and other Northbridge peripherals.

Of course you can go higher than a 64 bit bus. That has nothing to to do with what nintendos systems use.

There's a difference between a 64-bits bus and 64-bits instructions. Yes you can have a bigger bus and, yes, theorically, you can have 128-bits instructions. Only, we are VERY far from even getting close to the limit of 64-bits instructions and addressing.

Btw, x86 is indeed 32-bits. 64-bits is not a buzz word. Intel could easily do a pure 64-bit processor if they wanted. The current CPUs are what we call x86-64 CPUs. Why? Because they can use both 32 and 64-bits instructions. This is for compatibility with 32-bits programs of which... are very far from disappearing. Having a 64-bit CPU's main advantage is memory addressing. The theoretical limit of 64-bits memory addressing is over 1 exabyte. There's no way in hell that any hardware and software available now can even use or address that much.

For the WiiU, I can see it using a 32-bit CPU with 2GB of RAM. ARM released in 2011 a 64-bits CPU but we don't know if Nintendo went for an older chip or this recent one. It could be 64-bits. Having only 2 GB of memory doesn't mean it's stuck to 32-bits. Of course, there's no advantages but it doesn't mean 64-bits can't have less than 4GB of memory.

Some other good points. 64-bit isn't marketing, it's real stuff. ;)

P.S Didn't know about the IA64 CPU but I've heard the "IA" thing elsewhere (probably wikipedia, haha) so I believe you here ;)
