HI I have a question, ok so i have this gaming rig from 2009 and i just managed to fix it today. Anyways, i was wondering what the highest graphic card i could upgrade too. the specs are a E8400 intel core 2 duo cpu, 4 gb of gddr2 ram, and the current gpu is a radeon hd 4650.

you can put whatever in it but you'll get bottleneck's that will make it a waste of money with your other specs i have a 6870 and it runs everything great and is really reasonable money i'm sure the 7 series equivelent card would more than suffice your needs.

thats what i was worried about. i just want to know if there are any graphic cards out there that are sufficient enough to run todays games and not be bottle necked by other parts. i read else where that the highest without bottle necks would be a radeon HD 5770. or should i just wait and build a better pc later on when i have the money? what ever is the most cost effective is best.

nothing to stop you buying a decent card now then putting it in your new build when you get a bit more cash.

I have a GeForce gtx 670... It rapes games... And it will support Shield!! GeFoce GTX beats Radeon HD hands down IMO.
PS. Go with nvidia!! And you should probably wait to build a new rig.

I was once known here as KillerMario, but since I really like Banjo-Kazooie, I changed my display name to show them my respect :)

it's a pci express card almost certainly.

4650 isn't bad, x770 are the better/more mid-gaming range for amd

I would hold off until you get a better PC. its now standard for gaming rigs to have a a quad core CPU and 8 gigs of DDR3 ram to run most games decently. I also agree that you should go with Nvidia. They have much better drivers which is really important. I don't know what your budget is, but I would say you should get something between a GTX660Ti (which is pre-overclocked) and  GTX 680. Those are more than sufficient. The higher cards, like the 690 and the new Titan are $1,000. They are worth the money.....but unless you have that much cash to burn, you dont need it. The other cards I mentioned will run you between $400-$600.

Ram is super cheap now and a 3rd gen quad core cpu is about $300-$400. So take from that what you will. It also helps if you have a decent motherboard to for compatibility sakes and performance. They are not AS important but still needs to be considered for a proper rig. I would also suggest a Power Supply with 1000w. Corsair is the best make for that. For Ram, look for Patriot or Mushkin. Hope all this helps.
