Many gamers out there will own 720p TV's and be wondering the same question, will everyone be forced to uprgrade to a 1080p set to enjoy PS4/720?

Surely PS4 and 720 will have the option to play in 720p? Wii U can do real 1080p and 720p and do you think the higher resolution will be noticable with next gen games.

nothing to worry about.. it will downscale them...  But I think most of developers said, that most of next gen games will be 720p/30fps

Forgoing 1080p nearly frees up 2x your pixel fillrate, which could all be used for bucketloads of post op effects @720p.

The best looking games of next gen, will likely be 720p.

As already mentioned there is nothing to worry about as any games in 1080p will just downscale. There are still a lot of people out there who do not have 1080p capable TV's and neither Sony nor Microsoft are going to ignore them.

A 1080p TV is cheap as piss these days, if you can afford a ps4 then you most likely already own a good enough TV.

Maybe so but there is no point in some one spending money on a brand new TV if the current one is working just fine and is capable of working with the new consoles. A new TV is still going to cost several hundred dollars or pounds.

It seems like there will no 'great leap forward' for the next generation, just more polished product.

Which is no bad thing for nintendo as they'll be making the greatest leap encouraging upgrading from the Wii.

I haven't seen any next gen footage that has blown me away yet.

I think we will see really astonishing graphics this generation, but not in terms of increasing resolution.

That's literally the exact same story for why Nano Assult Neo is 720p: they had it running in 1080p, but it wasn't as noticable unless you are really close to the screen, so they made it 720p and added a lot more effects.

1080p and 720p games both work and look great on HD televisions, it's easy to downscale too, just look how easy one can choose the resolution of their game on a PC, it's not hard.

IMO the PS3 and 360 were fine how they were, they worked for HD, while Nintendo needed an HD console. I think Sony and Microsoft should have waited until 4k TVs and GPUs that could handle 4k became cheaper to make a next gen console then.

Because due to the massive jump in resolution games would have to have on a 4k TV - a next gen console would have been worth Sony and Microsofts time, now by the time 4k TVs are popular (over 40% of households) Nintendo will have the upper hand and release their next gen to be compatible with 4k TVs and Sony and Microsoft will be screaming because they just spent a ton of money on consoles which tehy felt would last a long time and now need to be updated to compete with Nintendo and look good on a 4k television.

Common sense tells you that, obviously they wouldn't release a console that forces you to buy a new TV.

It should mostly be 720p and 1080p, it would be rather stupid if it was 1080p only I think.

I think it'll support 720p, but Sony will probably want all of their titles to be 1080p it's natural for Sony to want to have their next gen games to be 1080p. I myself personally don't give a **** but hey, I understand when they're trying to show off that their console is more powerful that they expect all the games that come out to be 1080p only

All of Sony's and Microsoft's current next-gen projects are currently 1080p, it's assumed that's going to be the baseline for third party games as well.
