i have a 500gb verbatim store n go color hard drive, everything works great but when i plug the hard drive usb cable in the wii u  console it either gives me some error code or it says something like "please unplug the hard drive from the wiiu console"

my question is can this be fixed or do i need to pick up another version with a ac plug thats recommened by nintendo themselves

don't forget the wii u must be turned off when you plug in your hard drive.

It should ask you to format it when you insert it.

That's a weird problem.

the drive has been installed and formated for the wii u system

i have ordered a usb 3.0 y cable to see if that sorts it out

Does the Wii U support USB 3.0?  the cables themselves are backward compatible, so using a USB 2.0 cable with a 3.0 device works at 2.0 speeds.  I have a 3.0 device plugged into my Wii U and what happens to me all the time is the drive will idle when it isn't being accessed, then take too long to spin up when it does need to be accessed then the Wii U throws an error and asks me to restart.  I had to move BLOPS2 saves from the external to internal memory to keep it from locking up while trying to save progress.
