Maybe they are developing just a futuristic hover based racer. I don't think Shin'en is big enough to cope with a complete nextgen Fzero. I don't say they couldn't or have not got enough skill, just not enough capacity.
I was thinking something similar as well. I really don't think they're working of F-Zero, probably just something similar.

Would be interesting if Shin'en got pulled in as a second party developer and fed more resources.
To be honest, I am surprised that Nintendo hasn't full on employed these guys to do ONE hugely important matter:
Write the definitive Wii U game engine for licensing. Yes, the games are great. but these guys aren't so much great game makers as they are great coders with a good eye for graphics.
Put their strengths to use.
Retro, meanwhile, could be freed up to modify, enhance, etc. said engine instead of building it entirely. and then Retro could be freed up to focus on the gameplay experience itself.
Ah, fantasy... lol
