“While the development of Kid Icarus: Uprising was at its end, Satoru Iwata came me propose to develop the new Smash Bros game, and asked me if it should be on 3DS or Wii U. We arrived at a point where the series could not evolve, and we wondered if the handheld console was the solution. In the past, we have increased the number of characters and arenas, but this was not enough.”

“At that time, we could have chosen to develop a 3DS version only, but we realised the presence of several limitations. I am referring to the fact of playing a game like Super Smash Bros on a small screen. Thus, even if it is not easy to develop two versions simultaneously, we chose to adapt the game experience to the specifications of each platform.”

“Even though the characters will be the same in the version Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, the arena will be completely different. In the 3DS version, they are based on games released on portable consoles, while Wii U, arenas are based on articles on home console games.”

I would have been pissed if they only made a 3DS version. Hopefully this game will live up to my expectations!

I was once known here as KillerMario, but since I really like Banjo-Kazooie, I changed my display name to show them my respect :)

if it was 3ds only i honestly would be less interested. For one it would lack that same feel.

I can't believe only developing a 3DS version was considered.

Uhh. More characters and arenas is not evolving the series. But two different sets of arenas is evolving the series? Wat.

 What? Smash Brothers is evolving...

Smash Brothers has evolved into Smash Brothers HD!

 INNOVATION!

I love the history of Nintendo IP's and for the most part like that they stick to the same formula, but I find it so weaksauce when I hear the developers talk about innovation when it's nothing of the sort.  For the most part changes are improvements, not innovations. One thing I'm looking forward to down the line with dual gamepads would be gaming in the same room with a friend and being able to/being forced  turn around in your physical space to see what's around you.  I think that would be a really cool mechanic if Nintendo ever comes out with a FPS. Anyway... /endofftopic

that improvement is defined as innovation.

Cheap usage of the word when it's not really anything new or novel e.g. HD has been done for a long time now that's not an innovation just because Nintendo is late to the party.  Takes away any merit from their talking points for me.

'Innovation is the application of new solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs, or existing market needs.'

hrm....

Istill think, given the context used in the text read...

Its kinda bumpkiss balogne.

Though I dont really care, I dont want or expect anything out of smash beyond:

1. Updates: Graphics, arenas, rosters, items etc.

2: Refinements.

Not exactly the kind of series that needs to reinvent itself. If it wanted to go 3d for instance (uprisings multiplayer basically is this, has huge potential to be turned into something), id suggest using an entirely new name, no ones going to be happy about sacrificing 2d smash, no matter how awesome evolved 3d smash ends up being... It will be crucified out of sheer spite. I suspect nintendo has learned this, which is why they felt it necessary to release a smash on wii u too, to avoid a knee jerk hate storm.

Honestly... Im not that impressed or interested in wii u smash.

3ds smash though... I find very impressive and def. want.

 What does it mean?

 First result from google:

 in·no·va·tion

/ˌinəˈvāSHən/

Noun
  1. The action or process of innovating.
  2. A new method, idea, product, etc: "technological innovations".

Synonyms
novelty - newness

Eh, handheld version all always dumbed-down pseudo spin-offs; I'll stick with the Wii U version thank you very much.

I'm getting both versions! I'm just interested to see what they will do with the series!

I really hope they bring back the story mode and make it badass!

If the game was 3DS only, I think it would have been less well received due to console limitations. But both a Wii U and 3DS version are great, especially with each having different stages. I'll try to get both games, but if not, I'll be going with the Wii U version. Here's hoping that they launch on the same day!
