I'm pretty sure it was the Odyssey. Nintendo had the rights to distribute the system before they made their own TV games.

You need to be more specific, because the Magnavox Odyssey is the first video game system.
"In 1974, Nintendo secured the rights to distribute the Magnavox Odyssey
home video game system in Japan."
It may not be nintendo branded, but they owned the rights, technically making it their first console.

And from my research, Garolymar is technically correct as well. Despite the Game&Watch being an LCD based device, it is still counted as a handheld.

All right then, are you talking about the Japan only Color TV Game system series of Consoles? The consoles were "Handheld" (Well some of them were, since the console was basically the controller.) But the image was on the T.V. screen.

Color TV Game is correct! I believe the console timeline went like this: Color TV Game then the Game & Watch.

Is it the Wii U its a handheld/console.
