Someone FINALLY gets it.

No, they don't.  Nintendo has had the more powerful consoles in past generations and it didn't make a difference.  The gaming industry hates Nintendo because the gaming industry is a cheap tangerine who has whored itself out for a quick buck and Nintendo still has principles both with regard to gaming content and business practices.  Simple as that.

The question was how Nintendo can gain more support. I suggested that part of the solution is increasing the install base. A large part of the gaming market is dude bros. Making a system that is capable of appealing to dude bros doesn't mean they have to abandon their current fans. They don't have to make dude bro games. They just have to make a system with competitive graphics and online capabilities. It's the only way to truly gain more third party support with the market's current demands.

Indeed

No more of this Wii sports crap.

The gaming industry hates Nintendo because the gaming industry is a cheap tangerine who has whored itself out for a quick buck and Nintendo still has principles both with regard to gaming content and business practices. Simple as that.

90s Nintendo was notoriously difficult to deal with. That and sticking with cartridges was the downfall of N64's support. GameCube's support was a victim of 90s Nintendo's practices and N64's short comings. To add to that, Sony had taken the market by storm by making it easier for developers by using discs and therefore gaining support for PS, carrying that over to PS2, and Microsoft found their niche, dude bros, with Halo. So yeah, I get it. I was there.

But the original point I was making is this: to gain third party support, you gotta move units. To move units, you gotta satisfy that huge segment of the video game market. That's the type of gamer these third parties are after. PS360's success was, in large part, because they were able to make their machines go to social event hosting mediums. Playing COD, Halo, etc is a social event to many people.

That will take years. Probably not gonna happen during Wii U's lifespan.

To get more developers, Nintendo needs two things: A bigger install base, and to have a system with similar power and online infrastructure/features as Sony and Microsoft. Not one or the other; they both are musts.

And yes, Dude Bros. are definitely part of increasing the install base. It seems to me Nintendo needs to make their home console THE go to machine for multiplayer gaming. Lots of gamers play what's cool... with their friends. It's just a huge part of the video game audience nowadays.

this is true. I also say they need to bid there time and release after the next gen of systems, because if they go to early, like say in the next 3 years, people wont buy it because they'll wait to see what sony and xbox will do, and those 2 will mimic whatever nintendo does. i dunno, maybe the focus should be lets just be profitable and not everyones favorite. Sega dreamcast knows all about that...

I happen to like the Wii Sports series. But I said they shouldn't abandon their current fans, just make a system capable of meeting other fans' demands. If the goal is gaining third party support.

Nintendo was never and will never be attractive for third parties. Their platforms are  usually very popular, but every game gets outshined by first party games. There's also  a huge bias  towards Nintendo lately, so they have to rely on their own. Sad truth.

Fans have been asking for Metroid Prime 4 with online for years.

Nintendo is out-of touch. They can recapture their audience with the Wii U. There decision to not incorporate online into their games is utterly stupid.

Yeah, thats why the gamecube and n64 kept gaining 3rd party support instead of consistantly losing it!!!

Oh... wait... No, no thats the exact opposite of what happened.

that actually happened because 3rd parties threw a fit that they still used carts or the small discs couldnt hold a lot of info, so yes, they were the strongest, but that pissed off 3rd parties, it was a dumb reason and there are easy ways to over come a lack of memory, but we have firmly established that 3rd parties are lazy

I think 3rd party support is the lynch pin in Nintendo's gallows pole. Not too sure but I think those 3rd party companies that do port games over to the Wii U feel obligated in some extent to incorporate the game pad into the experience of the game, which most likely makes the game harder to code and requires more dev time vs just porting one from one console to another like PC vs Mac games. If the game works well on the other consoles without a gamepad why force the gamepad experience? Just treat the Wii U as another console with a standard controller. The gamepad should be a feature they want to use not feel they have to. I think there was a quote on another post about some company saying that unless the game is written for the Wii U it does not hold up to the other systems and this is most likely the truth and therefore makes them weary of spending development time to the Wii U when they can just port to another already existing group (PS3 and 360s) so it isn't a performance issue but an issue of hardware\software differences being so big that devoting a team to just the Wii U does not make sense financially when compared to the install base and how many units they will sell.

guys, it's simple really. Nintendo has dug themselves into a hole and they need to dig themselves out of it, not pretend it doesn't exist.

E3 is actually pretty straightforward:

1) controller redesign

2) cross game chat announced

3)improved Miiverse

4) 2/3rds of time spent on games needs to be spent on 3rd party (Mighty No. 9, Project CARS, other bigger titles that are third party that the Wii U actually has and can be hyped up (not indies))  This is to start giving the correct impression that the Wii U has a library outside of nintendo content.

5) opening presentation with full reveal of Monolith Soft's X and closing the show with Zelda announcement. (Metroid Prime or F-Zero announced/teased a swell)

Once E3 is over, nintendo needs to make sure that the stuff they talk about is other developers games 2/3rds of the time in Nintendo Directs and youtube videos, etc. They need to start securing releases of games like Star Citizen and Kingdom Come Deliverance, racing games, and just going after every gaming market that isn't first person shooter and EA Sports addicts.

They do need to slowly build their way to where they have those games, and need to talk about the multiplatform support and games they do have. and constantly be reminding people that they have 80% of the games the other two consoles have, and then their exclusive stuff as well. That's all it  really takes, hype your system, release new and better features for it constantly, and lavish the third party support you have with praise and attention. Notice how these are things that 1) Nintendo can do really easily in their own way and 2) Sony and Mircisoft already do with their system. and 3) notice how nintendo doesn't have to change any of their game development philosophies in the slightest. So they aren't really changing that much.

Nintendo doesn't care about most other developers. Especially port teams.

Nintendo will do nothing to cater to a 3rd party unless said 3rd party proves to Nintendo that they are worth their time. If they do that then chances are Nintendo is trying to hire said 3rd party or collaborate, not convince them of a port.

A very large section of Nintendo only wants to make good games, and from the looks of it, the devs that seem to be doing the same tend to get the most support. The 3rd parties and port teams that Eather dont seem to care, under management that don't care, or show no real sign of being any kind of talent, are the kind of 3rd parties Nintendo doesn't care about.

Microsoft catered to devs with easy to use stuff and mass advertising, Sony latter copied Microsoft approach, Nintendo approach has very little changes.

Just to answer questions there is nothing Nintendo would be able to do in one E3 to make their situation better with 3rd parties. It is going to take new management, new strategy, and new way of thinking before Nintendo and 3rd party publisher make progress.

That makes sense, Nintendo has always preferred having a more personal relationship with other companies. That's partially why they switched to ATI graphics for I believe the Gamecube. They have never been interested in having primarily financial relationships.

They only switched to ATI because they bought Artx and only went with Artx because Silicon Graphics fell apart and the good employes formed Artx.
