Damn that's a large amount. Hopefully these people can manage to find work over Microsoft's mistakes.

It's not MS making mistakes or losing money. It's Nadella changing focus of the company. They just hired 25,000 new people and the 18,000 was overlap that was redundant. MS is putting focus away from devices like Tablets and Xbox. So it's looking like Nadella wants Xbox to be the companies final console. I have said it for a while now and Nadella pretty much confirmed this that Xbox future is mobile. So expect it as a service and smart devices. Window phone be around since they just bought factories and Nokia. Surface may be around a little while longer but not that long. Writing is on the wall Nadella disapproves of Xbox division and wants them out of consoles. He wants MS to be focused on only a couple things Windows and it's services and likely Smartphones.

I'd prefer it if they simply made consoles another configuration of the Windows OS. I have a massive steam library, and Windows 8 is potentially a very awesome 10-foot interface if they bothered to make it and enforce the apps to be navigate able by a controller.
