From http://wiiudaily.com...ystation-video/

If you’re unfamiliar with the history of gaming, you may not know that the original idea for the PlayStation came from a failed venture between Nintendo and Sony. At the height of the Super Nintendo’s popularity, Nintendo approached Sony about producing an add-on that would use CDs as their storage, rather than the cartridges that had been present in all previous home console games.

While it never came to market because the venture between Sony and Nintendo collapsed before the product was released, Sony salvaged the product into their own game console and dubbed it the PlayStation. You can see one of the early peripherals designed for the SNES in this video and imagine would might have been, had Nintendo decided to continue their partnership with Sony and release the SNES PlayStation Superdisc.

There is a piece of history people miss about this. It was not Nintendo dropping sony that killed them. It was going catrridge as we had a bunch of CD based consoles that flopped at that time that Sony could have easily been another as at the time Phillips and Panasonic were huge electronic companies that rivaled Sony I mean heck NEC failed and they were massive. 3D0,Jaguar CD,CDi. Sony PlayStation being a success did not hurt Nintendo as so much is marked the end for SEGA. Tom Kalinske president of SOA of the time wanted to partner with Sony for the next console and gave them a spec sheet. SEGA of Japan rejected the idea and made Saturn instead. Sony used the specs to build PS1 and the Saturn was a nighmare to develop for and finished witrh 9 million sold worldwide. Had Nintendo went with CDs and SEGA partnered with Sony the industry today look a whole lot different.

SEGA and Nintendo made all the right mistakes to let Sony win. PS1 would have flopped otherwise.
