While everyone's attention has been shifted to Nintendo new console, let's look at the present
What are your opinion on the Nintendo Wii

-The best selling game console of the 7th generation with over 94.97 million units sold worldwide
-Brought Motion Control gaming into the mainstream market and now is a standard by all gaming systems
-Over 54 titles titles making more than a million units with games like wii sports selling at 76 million, mario kart at 30 million, and smash bros with 9.48 million.
-brought in different types of gamers
-suffered from a lack of third party support, under power system, terrible online and some didn't like the fact that motion controls were gimmicky instead of enhancing gameplay
-By far had the largest collection of niche games that wouldn't be even made if the wii was a general console like the ps3 or xbox which are dominated by the fps market

so yeah, what are your opinion on the system, where do you think it went wrong, where do you think it went right,do you think Nintendo supported it all the way or did they give up

The Wii did better than I expected Honestly. Way back when this generation started with Sony, Microsoft, third parties and gamers going on about TEH GRAFIX. Nintendo not having the resources to go for a super powerful console, went with new ways to play. In my opinion Nintendo was not going for the gaming audience and I had no idea where this would take them. I was expecting motion controles to give me some fun times and the first party games to be avarage good not great. But Wii bowling was way more fun than I expected. For third party support i was expexting shovel and only shovel but Zack and Wiki, De Blob, No More Heroes, Sonic Colours, Okami, Epic Mickey, and Monster Hunter pleasantly suprised me. As for first party sofware it amazed me a lot better than I was expecting. The virtual console letting me play SNES and N64 games that I missed was awesome. While the Wii was not able to support my gaming needs throughout this generation it didn't matter that much as I love my DS and my PC brought me fun times. The Wii did better than I was expecting, it has it's faults but sence everyone has spent the last six years repeating those over and over again I won't touch them. So inconclusion I like my Wii but I don't love it.

1. What went wrong?

Nintendo didn't gain third party support, which de-valued the overall game library. It is unclear whether Nintendo took a calculated risk and said we don't need third parties this generation, or they did not realize their under-powered console would turn off developers. Then, of course there is the transition from Wii to Wii U. The lack of games is seriously depressing; but at the same time I understand that Nintendo has done everything they can for the Wii as far as quality games, and we know third parties never really fully supported Wii.

2. What went right?

Coming from an old school, grew up with NES, SNES, and N64 gamer, this may have been Nintendo's best firs/secondt party line-up ever on a single home console. I mean look:

Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Twilight Princess
Skyward Sword
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mario Kart: Wii
Metriod Prime Trilogy
Metriod: Other M
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Kirby's Return to Dreamland
Wario Land: Shake it
Punchout!!
Super Paper Mario
Wii Sports and WS Resort
Wii Fit
Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
Xenoblade Chronicles (great reviews internationally, US release soon)

I know I'm forgetting a few, but seriously, that first/second party line up can stand toe to toe with any console ever, IMO.Some of those entries are the best ever in their series, and all of them are at least solid entries. They also did a good job of marketing the hardware- see the sales numbers.

3. I do think Nintendo supported the Wii all the way, or at least they did as far as they could. In other words, they certainly did not give up. They had just all ready used all of their big guns and they were not getting any thrid party games to fill in the gaps. I mean, they have to devote their best resources to developing for Wii U, and they don't wanna rush something for Wii just to have a first party game out. Like I said in number 1, the transition from Wii to Wii U has been anything but smooth, but looking back, most console transitions have a little lull in them. Nintendo's just happens to be a big lull this time.

I actually re-bought a Wii quite recently, at 30 pounds it was a bargain and more importantly it works hehe.

I think the main problem was not so much lack of third party support more an abundance of shovelware for the system. The first couple of years I found it hard to track down quality games as the retailers seemed to fill their shelves with games like Ninjabread Man and other such titles. I do feel that during the end of it's life cycle it has improved dramatically though.

The good was the games, though hard to come by amongst all the dross there where some quality games for the system, games which where under rated and thus overlooked by a lot of people. Luckily for me while people are prepping for the new console I am able to pick up these games on the cheap. I got Fire Emblem for £3.99 the other day which is a bargain.

I think as a family bring everyone to play console it succeeded. As a more mature third part power console I wanted more. I think they could have put more into this console they could have pushed launch price to 300-350 and make it a little more powerful. Hopefully they right the ship with Wii U.

My thoughts on the Wii can surmised by this statement: The Wii will be the next Dreamcast. Not in the last hurrah sense,(the wii u proves that) but in the retro collector's sense.

While it is one of the most best selling consoles of all time, there are a ton of games that were just passed by. I believe that in the future that retro collectors will be hunting down all the games that they missed, and when they look back, they see that it really was a good system, but was bogged down by so much shovelware that they just couldn't get themselves to find that diamond in the rough.

I was pretty dissapointed. I mean, it started off great and I was super hyped in the year leading up to the the Wii's release. When it came out I don't think I even cared at all about PS3 or 360, I barely knew what they were. The Wii is a good console in it's own right, but when compared to it's competitors it just starts to look very underwhelming. It didn't get very many decent games when compared to 360 and PS3 either, but then a lot of the games it did have were pretty amazing and innovative in a lot of ways. Online was probably it's absolute weakest part. Whereas Xbox Live and PSN are these massive, highly detailed services that link gamers together and have all kinds of features you might not have even known about, Nintendo Wi-Fi was absolutely pathetic. It was barely better than the PS2's online. I didn't care too much about the graphics, but the lack of HDMI support doesn't do some of the Wii's best games justice. Not only that, but the fact that the Wii wasn't just an underpowered console, but literally an upgraded Gamecube, killed third party support outside of shovelware and a few exclusives.

That said, I do still think it's a good console, when you stop trying to compare it to 360 and PS3. I'm just dissapointed that Nintendo really didn't do much with what they had. The Gamecube, for all the slack it got, was in reality a strong competitor to the PS2 and Xbox and only lacked a few relatively small things. I can't say the same about the Wii unfortunately.

I was disappointed the most with third party. There were barely any good third party games and the ones that were good none ever bought them and just continued to buy first party software.THis is a problem for Nintendo for a long time but it really went to the extreme on the wii when games like mario galaxy selling at 10 million while No more heroes barely at a million(last time I checked),I cant help but think we are partly to blame for that for just buying nintendo software and not supporting third parties...And I am sure this will happen on the wii U as well.Sure it has great third party support but really you wont ever see a blockbuster in sales figure on a nintendo platform from third parties..

I do think that Nintendo really tried thier best to support the console throught it all. They had an amazing ideas but they could never really nail it down but then every now and then you would play a game like mario galaxy and Skyward Sword and you realised why they ever made it in the first place.that was thier initial idea and in some retrospecte it has done that.

It really made sense so much in paper though. It was a console that was based on the ds which as we know is like the ps2 in handheld consoles by having the largest amount of games from mainstream like cod and final fantasy to a more niche market that appealed to every type of gamer. With casual games like Brain Academy and Hardcore like Metroid and Fire emblem to a bridge games like Professor Layton..it was the best of both worlds and I am sure this was thier idea for the wii but somewhere it went wrong.Lack of hardware, online, motion controll

This is pretty much what the Wii U will do. Now about my option on the Wii. Market-wise the Wii was a HUGE revolution, renewing the gaming industry and make Nintendo tons of money. However, it had many faults that were listed above. The shear lack of what it had in comparison of the other consoles hurt its reputation. But it overcame these faults with great games both third and first party games that ,sadly, avoided pubic eye.
These tiles include:
Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Twilight Princess
Skyward Sword
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Mario Kart: Wii
Metriod Prime Trilogy
Metriod: Other M
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Kirby's Return to Dreamland
Wario Land: Shake it
Punchout!!
Super Paper Mario
Wii Sports and WS Resort
Wii Fit
Sin and Punishment: Star Successor
Xenoblade Chronicles
Zack and Wiki
De Blob
No More Heroes
Sonic Colours
Okami
Epic Mickey
Monster Hunter

Not to shabby if you ask me. Also the Wii was a great console in the fact that you can play a variety of different games and enjoy them a lot in only a short period of time. This pick up and play "style" was one of the many reasons that the Wii is well liked and favored over some gamers along with their Xbox 360's and/or PS3's.

This is pretty much what I am aiming to do with my Wii as we speak, though I am looking more for collectors editions of games (where there was collectors editions made)...Currently out of the 5 games I have I have the Alone in the Dark Collectors Edition and The Conduit Special Edition. I think further down the road some of these games will be worth a pretty penny.

I already see One Piece Unlimited Cruise Part 1 selling in PAL regions for 60 - 100 pounds and I think this game will turn out to be a lot more later on, much like Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Saturn which is impossible to buy for less than £100 pounds now and has been for some years now.

I've been thinking the same thing about the Dreamcast comparison.

Although with the Wii U being backwards compatible, I'm positive that a lot of Wii bashers would buy a few Wii games they missed out on. I've seen many people complaining when the Wii gets a good third party game as an exclusive (Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Goldeneye 007, Dragon Quest X, etc). If they end up getting a Wii U for whatever reason, I'm sure they'll dig into the Wii's library.

Nintendo didn't abandon third party, third party abandon Nintendo. Seriously, there were a lot of third party games on the Wii. They may be games that look better on XBox 360 and PS 3 but they were on the console. There may have been spin offs games that didn't appeal to you but they were on the console. For me, Nintendo Wii helped continue my legacy of gaming. I was bored of gaming. It didn't interest me anymore but the Wii was refreshing. I knew once HD was hitting strong that gaming would follow that trend. Motion controlling is what done it for me. It was something different and it wasn't really done before at that type of level. The motion controls felt more futuristic than HD. HD still is only SD but looks better but a new way to play is well a new way to play. I want to thank the Nintendo Wii for reviving my love for video games.
