An unconfirmed report surfaced yesterday saying that Apple CEO Tim Cook was spotted at Valve’s headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Whenever Cook is spotted out and about, people take notice. The CEO of the world’s most valuable company doesn’t personally visit other tech companies to simply have a chat.
Many speculated as to why Cook would be visiting Valve, maker of popular game series like Half-Life, Team Fortress and Portal. Valve also boasts an incredibly robust online PC gaming platform called Steam that operates similarly to Apple’s App Store.
We’ve gotten word that Cook was indeed at Valve yesterday, and what’s more, Apple is planning a full-on assault to take over the living room. This assault won’t just be limited to the long-rumored Apple HDTV set, but will also include a revolutionary home console as well.
According to sources to Cult of Mac, Apple is working on a television set with an iTunes-integrated touch screen remote and Siri-like voice command technology. The TV set will be coming before the end of 2012. Rumors and patents have said as much for the past year, so that’s nothing new. But that’s not all we’ve heard.
Our sources also say that Apple’s television set will come with an Apple-branded, Kinect-like video game console. The interface will rely heavily on motion and touch controls.
If true, this wouldn’t be Cupertino’s first foray into the console market.
Back in 1995, Apple collaborated with Bandai to product a Mac OS running home console called the Bandai Pippin back in 1995. Things were pretty disjointed at Apple back then, and the company was trying to regain its image under the leadership of Michael Spindler. Apple licensed the Pippin platform to Bandai for a console, but the market was already dominated by the PlayStation and Sega. The Pippin was priced too high to compete and Bandai ended up selling less than 50,000 units before shelving the project.
Back to Valve. The gaming company makes Steam, a PC game distribution network with 30 million active users on both the PC and Mac. Steam is to gaming as iTunes is to music. Recent rumors have suggested that Valve is working on its own console dubbed the “Steam Box.” Instead of another Xbox or PlayStation, the hardware would serve as more of a standard that Valve would license to partners, much like the way Google handles Android in the smartphone space.
Recent Valve job listings also indicate that the company is working on a mysterious hardware project. The Steam Box is rumored to feature biometrics technology in the form of a bracelet or wearable device for recognizing players.
Last year Valve CEO Gabe Newell seemed concerned with Apple’s ‘walled garden’ approach and the possibility of its entrance into the TV market. ”On the platform side, it’s sort of ominous that the world seems to be moving away from open platforms,” Newell told The Seattle Times. ”They build a shiny sparkling thing that attracts users and then they control people’s access to those things.”
Newell talked about “shiny sparkling things” again in a more recent interview a couple months ago:

Well, if we have to sell hardware we will. We have no reason to believe we’re any good at it, it’s more we think that we need to continue to have innovation and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that’s what we’ll do. It’s definitely not the first thought that crosses our mind; we’d rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do that. We think it’s important enough that if that’s what we end up having to do then that’s what we end up having to do.

If there’s anyone that’s good at manufacturing and distributing hardware, it’s Apple. We don’t know the exact details of why Tim Cook met with Valve recently, but the two companies are obviously talking to one another. Based on what we’ve heard, it’s possible that Apple could be considering Valve as a partner for its entrance into living room gaming.

So if this goes threw and gets amazing sales this could hurt Microsoft since they want there console to be like a Kinect Box which could take away sales from Kinect and Xbox 360/720.

Personally, I don't want Vapple (Valve and Apple name together) to make there own console, I think Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are the perfect fit and It would hurt gaming bad if we got someone new, what do you think?.

Can't wait. Not. Wii U FTW!

Btw, Apple is only good for making devices that play music IMO.

I really don't think this is likely, but I could be wrong.

I think this is more so to compete against Google upcoming technology that is basically wearable technology as well.

If true, it'd do nothing more than consoles currently do with a much higher price tag.

The Valve hardware crap gets worse and worse.
They're not making controllers, and they're not making consoles.

This is valve fanboy's dream fodder.
I am a valve fanboy, but I'd prefer them not to limit themselves to their own hardware.
What's great about Valve is that they don't really limit you.
Your PC can be what you want, Steam is DRM you don't really notice, and it's got really good community features and a kickface store to buy cheap games off.
I prefer them being third party.

REALLY?!?!? This is so totally awesome, I can't wait to play all my favourite games on the iSteam. Metroid will be so grea...of wait, that's Nintendo. Hmm, it appears that this isn't actually that great.

I still have a really hard time imagining Valve going into the console business. I just don't get why they would take a risk on a console when they are already so successful with the PC.

As for Apple, it would be rather interesting to see what they do with a console. I'm not sure how much they would have for console type games if they didn't team up with Valve. I'm sure no matter what it would be a huge success because it is Apple and people enjoy throwing money at them.

Google is destined to take over this world. Nintendo should team up with them. Use an android OS, have mini games on android devices and official YouTube and google search engine built in. Just to say a big Wii you to apple and Nintendo investors that wanted iOS lol

I don't get what your trying to say.

I just think the market will change drastically if apple enters the market on a partnership with valve.

The hardware will likely blow most of the competition out of the water and with a full partnership with valve, support of a great developer will already be there.

I just think an apple/valve combo is a big deal if its true and will likely cause a change in the industry.

If Jobs was still alive, I'd say this is 100% untrue, and based in fantasy.
But with the recent change in CEO, there could be a shift in what Apple want to go with their hipster appeal.

Valve hate DRM which limits players.
Apple love DRM which limits absolutely everything.
I don't think they are very well matched for hardware, but they'd certainly change everything if they did do something together.
Apple would have a cheap model to get crappy games and worse developers working on their hardware.
Valve would get every PC game working accross it with Steamworks and attract some really great original games and great indie developers.
The online features would be the best of all consoles, you'd be able to watch your itunes shows and listen to your music during games, etc. etc. etc.
It'd win.
But it's not likely.

well sony could partner up with Google if they were desperate but that also seems unlikely.

Though if that were to happen it would be a weird partnership.

THis is very good, open approach to the gaming hardware business i hope they make a console . Apple hardware is very reliable and enjoyable with a great OS / interface and valve games are unique and interesting so i think this rumor could be true and smart

that proves also, that the mobile era as the generation of devices who kill consoles, is sooooo wrong.. Because if dedicated systems are 100% game consoles.. Mobiles and this kind of craps are about 10%..
In the other hand, I dont think it will be successful, I mean only americans will buy that.. And historically, we know and it proved, that they cannot be more than 3 consoles in the market (only if they are different type of consoles, for a small specific number of customers). If this machine comes out, they will separate to.. Online box vs online box ( most likely xbox720 vs this apple valve machine) and (sony vs nintendo).. Because when they create a machine that force you to be always online, is not a feature of the machine, that makes it different type of machine... I think sony will not foce their customers to do that, they dont have the money to make a bet on that, as a successful patent..most likely the majority will reject it..

Personally I will never buy a net box.. (internet machine)... I want to have my own choices, in this one.. When I want to, and if I want to.
