lol at the thought of Super Mario 4 being developed/coming out near launch.

It just won't happen, people should be kind of happy with Pikmin 3

How much money will we bet on the fact that there won't be a 3D Mario this year? People refer to SMB3 as Super Mario 3 sometimes for example. And saying SMG2 doesn't count is like saying SMB3 doesn't count.

People will understand that SM4 = SMB4 eventually but SM4 is a shorter name which is better for a domain.

I dunno... You know that the original Mario adventure games (2D and 3D) have the word "Super" at the begining. The Spinoffs like Mario Kart and Mario Tennis don't.

Super Mario Bros.: 2D Mario
Super Mario: 3D Mario
Mario Kart: Spin-off (Not including Super Mario Kart because 3D Mario's didn't exist at the time so the distinction wasn't perfectly settled)
Mario Tennis: Spin-off
Mario Golf: Spin-off
Mario Party: Spin-off

See how the last four don't have the word "Super"? There's a reason for it. Mario is a superhero in the original games. In the spin-offs, he's a normal character. Playing a "Super Mario" includes the fact that you're gonna save the princess, while in the spin-offs you just play a totally different game set in a world we all know: Super Mario's.
You may be right when saying that people refer to SMB3 as Super Mario 3, but that's due misunderstanding and confusion. I may call a cat a dog, many people could call a cat a dog, but would the cat be a dog, even though a lot think so? (Hope you see my point.)

You said "And saying SMG2 doesn't count is like saying SMB3 doesn't count."
I have to say I don't totally agree with your statement. Mario Galaxy 2 was originally supposed to be a expension pack for Mario Galaxy. But that proves nothing. You have to see Super Mario as a story, not only a game.Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are not two different games, they're one story cut in the middle. You know, some editors cut the Count of Monte Cristo (a book, but you should already know that) in two parts, some cut it in three parts, some just published the whole story in a single book. Think of Mario Galaxy as a book divided in two: they could have developed the whole thing and then released it as a single Mario Galaxy. Now, we're not dumb, we know what's the gaming market. You have to do things fast and the CD has a limit that forbids you to store too much content on it so... you know. SMB 3 is a whole new branch of the series, which makes it different.

Kof... Kof... that was a lot of content to say...

I wonder what the next Super Mario's theme will be.
I hope the water comes back.

I understand your point but you know, SMB, SMB2 and SMB3 are numbered (aside from 1 off course) and SM64, Sunshine and Galaxy aren't numbered so calling a new 3D Mario "Super Mario 4" would be very unlogical and confusing (I know they've done the same thing with Mario Kart 7)
No sig.

Either way we know we will see a 3D Mario at some point in the Wii U's lifespan, and we've heard from Shiggy himself that they're working on a Mario Wii U title, and I'm willing to bet that's just it.

I'm hoping they bring back the athleticism Mario had in Super Mario 64. It seems like he's gotten slower, stiffer and jumps less high since then. Also the ability to attack more in terms of diving, punching and kicking like SM64.

But that's just me. Probably.
