If anyone has been researching the design of the Wii U controller, they'd realize that there is a built in microphone. What does this mean in terms of games? This could very well be the end of headsets (ex. Xbox Live.) With a microphone in the controller, you can just talk without any extra peripherals and your team-mates can hear you perfectly. Do you think this could start a trend with the other gaming companies?

I'm betting right now that the controllers for PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 will have built-in microphones.

Obviously... Sony and Microsoft always copies Nintendo. I wouldn't even be surprised if this happens.

Well now Mass Effect 3 on the Xbox 360 uses Kinect to tell your teammates where to go and the Mass Effect 3 creator said he can imagine all the cool things that the new controller for Mass Effect 3 and that he'll announce something later, probably Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U. Then they could use the built in microphone to mimic Kinect's microphone. Also in the Ghost Recon Online trailer they were using voice chat without headsets so I's say it's pretty much confirmed.

Depends on a number of things. The Wii U looks to be designed to have a maximum of 2 people using the new controller allowing them to up the cost of the cost of the controller. I know its only a microphone but if Sony and Microsoft focus on getting 4 or more controllers on the go then the extra cost may not be too great... or sth.

In Ghost Recon Online's trailer (The game exclusive to Wii U and PC) they show how you can use the controller as a headset.

It would be cool if it could have some kind of voice recognition/Voice command feature.
You know what guys?
It's amazing how the the human mind does not process the the fact I used the word "the" twice in a row in this sentence.

I think headsets are more accurate than built-in mics so even though this is a pretty big first for controllers I don't think headsets will be phased out altogether.

If the microphone on the controller is anything like Wii Speak, I'll stick with my headset.

It may be better if Nintendo actually adds a port into the controller that allows a headset to be plugged in. So you don't need to stretch the cord all the way to the console itself.

Having a microphone on a controller would be very handy indeed. I'm just hoping that it would clearly recognise my voice without also picking up the sounds of my controller 'clicking'. :D

I do hope, however, you are able to hook a headphone/microphone headset into the WiiU controller.

I hadn't noticed the microphone on the controller, so thanks for pointing this out. I think it'll definitely be used in games. I hope it'll catch on a bit better than Wii Speak did. (Was that used for any games other than Animal Crossing?) Voice control would also be a nice feature.

You can see a USB port on the controller from the third picture on this Nintendo page. http://e3src.nintend.../#/introduction So at the very least, I think we'll be able to plug in a USB mic/headphones/headset.

Who does that anyways? I think we all be better off with a WIRELESS headset...

That's actually an HDMI port, not USB. Makes me wonder what exactly Nintendo have up their sleeves with this thing.

This will evidently have in game chat as one of it's uses, Nintendo saw the potential that Wii Speak had in games like Animal Crossing and Monster Hunter, but the fact that it was sold separately and had a generally low sound quality did hurt it quite a bit.

I sure hope they bring out a headset, the last thing I'd want anyone to hear is the F bomb being screamed out of my TV or some little kid screaming out "Raped" over and over because his team won an online game. Not that I know what Nintendo online gamers are like, I'm basing this on my Xbox live experience.

Mass Effect 3 on the WiiU? I'd kill to play that. Imagine having the power wheel always up on the touch screen so it wouldn't have to interrupt the flow of battle. But unless the WiiU version comes out almost right after the 360 version, there is no way I could wait for it. I need my epic finale now! :D

HDMI? You mean, as in High-Definition Multimedia Interface? What? I don't know what you're implying, that's it's not wireless? It's not a HDMI port. It's most likely for something like a nunchuck.

edit:

On closer inspection I think it is... but what would it be used for?
