Hi, is there any information whether it will be possible to play Wii games on the Wii U via HDMI? This is important since I can't pop an old Wii AV-Cable and/or RGB-cable into my Flat-Screen monitor without using a converter box.
Playing Wii games on the Wii U via HDMI output would be a Day 1 purchase argument for me, since I completeley missed out on all of those.

Thanks.

Yes, the system will play all Wii games. I don't see any reason for them to not work when using an HDMI (though I'm not exactly an expert on the more technical side of things), however don't expect them to be upscaled to HD.

The Wii U supports HDMI out of the box so there's no reason I can think of. Keep in mind that unless Nintendo chooses to upscale some Wii games, the highest resolution supported will be 480p. Playing most Wii titles on HDMI would be a moot point.

Yup wont be upscaled. HDMI is just an output it should work fine considering the PS3 lets you play PS1 disc games and PS2 games (launch models only) through hdmi

It will be upscaled. Just not rendered in 1080p.

If you don't upscale you would have to play the wii games in a small window on your HDTV.

Well... I'm not sure if you misunderstood on purpose, but anyway... If it's not upscaled, the signal to the TV will be 480p and then the TV scales it up to 720p or 1080p depending on the TV:s native resolution. But if the WiiU itself would scale it up, it could do it in a much nicer way. So your statement is correct, but it's not really an answer to the question.

The Wii U itself will not upscale the games like the PS3 does with PS1 and I believe PS2 games. The Wii U should play Wii games through HDMI just like the PS3 does with PS2 and PS1 games and the Xbox 360 with original Xbox games. They will probably play in 480i or 480p. The TV will do the scaling which is not the same thing. Regards compatibility Nintendo themselves said most Wii games will work but not all.

Wii games will be playable on Wii U with an HDMI cable.

However, the use of HDMI does not mean that Wii games will all of a sudden be "HD." In fact, they won't.

Thanks for all the answers guys. I was aware the Wii U hardware wouldn'd upscale the games, but at least I don't need to buy an expensive VGA Box to play Wii games.

Can't wait to get started with that Metroid Prime Trilogy!
