Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that he had spent countless hours testing out the next instalment of the long-awaited Pikmin franchise on the Nintendo 3DS, Wii and the Nintendo DS. It wasn’t until the prospect of Wii U came along that he decided to scrap the Wii version and make Pikmin 3 exclusively for Wii U.

“And at the same time we were also trying out different experiments on the DS and the 3DS and the Wii to see which platform the game would work best on. We had decided on Wii when the possibility of putting it on the Wii U became available, as we began to see what that framework was going to look like. At that time we definitely decided, okay, this is going to be much better on Wii U.”

Glad they did, but I do really hope we get some kind of Pikmin installment on the 3DS at some point.

Pikmin 3 seems to be based on collecting treasure, but from what Miyamoto said, there might be a plot about Olimar's absence.

Pikmin 3DS should be about what's going on with Olimar and maybe Louie during the events of Pikmin 3.
In other words, the games would have parallel plots.

I think I blew my own mind with that idea.

We need Pikmin on the 3ds. Am i the only one that completed the pikmin streetpass puzzle and stares at the 3 pikmins for 2-3 hours

I'm glad Pikmin 3 was moved to the Wii U. It's the kind of game that cries out for supreme visuals.

Maybe they've given Olimar a seperate game to build his IP, that could be why they couldn't discuss it at the E3 conference.
