Nintendo customer service says Wii U/3DS to have unified eShop account setup

"A unified account system will be implemented later this year with the launch of the Wii U. Eventually this same account system will be made compatible with Nintendo 3DS systems. At this time we have no additional details to offer and nothing to indicate how or if this will work outside the United States and Canada. In the meantime, if the system has a problem, taking it to an Authorized Service Center will maintain the Nintendo eShop account. If the system is stolen, we can transfer the account to a new system once we are provided with a valid police report.

Of course, you asked this question because of the upcoming launch of New Super Mario Bros. 2 in retail and digital formats. What you need to know is that the digital format will only be available in the United States and Canada. We have nothing to announce regarding Latin American availability. Even tho I might not have a Wii U at launch, I'l definitely have a 3DS XL by then!

Nope, but this means the money you put on the 3ds account will be accessible on your Wii U account as well. This could also allow you to order games from the online store for any of the two systems from any of the two. As in buy a 3ds games digitally thru the Wii U, and vise versa.

That's great! Whatever makes Nintendo's online service more convenient and accessible is always accepted.

I do wonder if there could be some 3DS / Wii U cross-compatability? Maybe not 3D titles on your Wii U, but I could see playing some Virtual Console games on your Wii U, or WiiWare titles on your 3DS. Although, I think I'd like to see a Lost Winds sequel in full 3D. Anyway, this is cool news.

In other words just like how the PSN works with the PS3, Vita and PSP now.

If they don't do this, it's going to be bad for business. If it happens, hopefully like the PS3 and Vita there will be games that are on both consoles and when one version is purchased, you also get the version for the other console at no extra charge. Where games could also share DLC and cross platform play.
