It's not infrared or Bluetooth. The connection from the Wii U to the gamepad is a 5ghz 802.11n wifi.

I get the feeling the gamepad will be usable in my brothers room but not mine which is right next to his and the 2nd closest room to the lounge room upstairs >.> hope I'm wrong though!
