What from Wii U's launch should Nintendo keep in mind when making the Wii U's successor?

IMO i think Nintendo should...

Advertise more.

Be less secretive with projects.

Push more eastern devs for third-party support .

Rely less on western devs.

Make new IPs.

Try new ideas with existing IPs.

Fire Reggie and Iwata.

Nintendo needs to learn what an Account System is. This means that all online data from a specific person's account (eShop purchases, Miiverse posts, THE F-ING ACCOUNT ITSELF!) should be tied to an account and NOT the hardware! That was just an idiot choice on their part.

The biggest mistakes they made for the WiiU in my opinion was
*The name (cause sooommme people think it's just the Wii with a fancy controller).
*Having to update day 1, you should be able to access all features without having to do an update.

Also the sloppy OS and the delays on most of their big titles did put a big strain on sales.
Hopefully the WiiU will just be like the 3DS, started off terribly in sales than have a massive jump in sales.

This may be easier said than done, but they should really try to not have such a huge gap between a console release and first party AAA titles from them. Allowing their sales to dwindle. Added to the fact that they are NOT doing even CLOSE to enough advertising. Not smart. Yes, its launch titles were decent, but it really needs to time their game releases better. If there was a 3D Mario, Star Fox, Metroid, Mario Kart...whatever..in its launch window. It would be a lot better. The side-scrolling Marios' are nice, but they are not new or fresh enough to push nearly as many units as a 3D Mario would.

We probably wont see any of these major titles till later this year or sometime next year. That is a long time to wait.

That and of course the name of the system and their lack of explaining to the general public about the Gamepad NOT being a Wii peripheral. That is a major problem.

I don't think Nintendo has made any mistakes with the wii u itself.

But the marketing and timing sure could use a boost.

i think they shouldv waited till they got all the kinks out. also they shouldv named it something else. there are people that think its just an add on to the wii... im in favor of NES-U :) also like other people said, shouldv gotten better ports, exclusives, and more advertising.

Xbox - Xbox 360
Playstation - Playstation 2 - Playstation 3

Yeah...same mistake has been done by Sony 2 times already.

There is a big difference however between having a number after the main name to indicate its a new console and a successor and having a letter. Not to mention the way they promoted the Wii U before launch by focusing on the Gamepad making people think it was either an addition to the Wii or a new portable console.

Not necessarily. As the system has only been out a couple months, it is still more then relevant. Plus, they are already planning their next platforms. So it is an interesting, important and thought provoking topic to discuss.

Nintendo always had a new and unique name for each of it's consoles, theres nothing really to indicate a new console with just adding a U to the title. I like the name but they definitely should have changed the name for the sake of clearly showing it's a new console without having to promote it in any special way.

If anything, Nintendo should advertise the console more. I haven't seen one commercial yet. With that being said, Nintendo might be waiting until some major FP titles are released before they hit the advertising trail. After thinking about it, it makes sense. They've released the system, but don't have that many titles, nor all software available as of yet. Could we be in a "Silent Opening" stage for the Wii U. I'd say after the virtual console and a couple of major titles come out, Nintendo will be getting the word out that they are here to compete in the Next Gen Market.

More adverting. Less secrecy. Make sure your OS is ready.
