#313133 EDM Production and Appreciation thread!

Wow, cool! I love how FPS montages always sync up shots with the music. :D

BTW, if you don't mind me asking, do promoters and people like this who use your music usually message you and tell you they used it or do you just have to find out for yourself? lol

I usually search "hinkik" and put "recent first" to find people who've used my songs.

One hundred followers in a day? Well not bad.

Getting promoted by popular channels are quite smart actually. You guys should try sending in your tracks.

Sounding really great!

Made some funky jams!

I did use a drum loop, heh...

Dayum. Sidechain that bassline and compress/limit your drums and it will awesome.

Btw post your "studios" guys xD Here is mine:

Update on that 45 bar loop of electro I made before...

@Chaym

Let's wrap up. Different songs are musically and objectively better than others while all songs serve different purposes.

You gaijin, you... (that reminds me though, I really have to get working on making a new alias...)

And eh, I don't limit my songs to a certain except under 10 minutes usually. I'm sure if you looked through even wolfgang and deadmau5' stuff alone you'd find electro songs over 5 min (I use those two because they're kind of the kings of old school electro house). Heck Strobe is over 10 minutes long which is generally unheard of in electronic music. Song length is of the things I worry about least when I make music. I usually make the whole thing and only really check the time when I'm done. That way I don't limit my creative process. I can always cut bits out if I really feel it's too long or think it's too repetitive. Turning a long song into a short one is pretty easier. The other way around not so much. Also i kind of had a trap breakdown thing going on for emotion changes, but i cut it out before I uploaded because i'm still not sure I like it and it's pretty rough.

Anyway speaking of Strobe, I was demonstrating to my mom today why I respect deadmau5' music but not martin garrix's, which involved listening to this:

It got me thinking. I think you can tll you've made a great track when you can play it with pretty much any instrument, or combination of instruments and still retain the same beauty and emotion with it.

And in case you're wodering this is what I was comparing it to...

Strobe would be a pretty high level piano piece. Animals is like grade 2 or 3 tops

Those were really nice design wise. Didn't quite catch me aurally, although the second one came much closer to do so.

I honestly think you shouldn't degrade other music, we all shouldn't, because we aren't better. Animals is catchy and was unique when it was released. It's a great track (just a tad bit basic mixed but still fine) it's just over played and now it's kinda in to hate on the mainstream and love Deadmau5 and Noisia. They are both great but in different regards.

Animals has way more notes in it than that video and that transcription isn't even right on the rythm and Strobe can be played as simple as the animals video (bass note in left hand and melody in right hand). Besides, that isn't even the original composition, that's the Evan Duffy version.

If it's allowed to use other's arrangements then I will just post this video then:

Well, here's an idea...

Sounds like a cross between pop and the japanese way of arranging. Nice ^^

I would personally do a completly different sound design on the lead and make a more stabby chord sound though but that's ofc 100% subjective and depends on your style.

@Chaos your Submit button on youtube links to hotmail.com, literally just hotmail.com. Thought you wanna know that.

Cool! Sure, I'll send you a project file when I'm finished.

For the main synth though, I can raise the low mids in the eq, but the chords don't actually hit any of the high frequencies except for when I turn the cutoff on the filter all the way up, so that might be a little hard to fix.

I added some reverb and EQ to the rain sample and then I put some slight compression on it. So it sound better I think.

For the kick I just added a sub bass kick so I hope that works. I don't want it to clash with the bass line so I originally had the EQ set so that it wouldn't interfere with the bass as much. I guess I went too overboard with that lol.

As for the clap, seperating the stereo is probably one of my greater weak points. Maybe I can find a good tutorial for that.

Oh, and I made the intro and breakdown so long because I'm planning on making it over 6 minutes long. So it's long on purpose like that. Maybe I'll make the original version into an extended version and then make a shorter one though.

For crispier highs on the synth, you can just add to amount of cut off the cut off envelope does. You will basically get higher transiets in a very short time intervall.

Regarding the bass. A sub never clashes with a regular bass. You generally high pass at 150Hz on the regular basses. It will sound heavy/full layered with low mid bass you have. Sine wave is probably the best thing to put in the sub 100 Hz area if you want fullness and punch. (Just lower the volume of the sub if there is too much punch). Listen to Oliver Helden's Koala and you will understand what I mean. Or even a better example, this one has a very tight low end and still that plucky progressive feel to it. I think you should consider using that track for referencing. Listen to the highs in the chords in the track, they have crispy highs even though the cut off is quite low. He has probably done some mid/side EQ to get such punchy chords while still maintaining the width.

So I did some sort of progressive glitch hop thing...

What do you guys think?

Somehow reminds me of some youtube tutorials from 2008. Strange. Still nice sounding.

This shall be my new song after I fix the bass problem on my song Wilds

This one I liked a lot ^^

Probably my favorite from you.

If it had vocals and a profesional mixdown + mastering, I am not kidding, this one could get on the more major promotion channels.

Could you say something about this track as a whole? Mostly finished the arrangement now.

I am looking for honest feedback. Like how does this compare to other electro tracks and my other songs (I try to make something better than Invaders which many tell me is my best song).

My friend told me it's a little bit bland/boring. I can't tell if it's true since I've put 23 hours of constant editing on this song which makes me unable to know if it's good or not.

I am trying to set a little higher standard on my tracks from now.

Maybe too much highs now...

@Matrix holy rainbow that was actually some nice growls man

Btw, sample packs isn't needed to buy, there are tons of freeware that is really good. Deficio pack, which you already have is really good.

And as you said, Image-Line is still doing life time upgrades so you can buy FL whenever you want.

Thanks for the feedback guys

Yeah I can't reach higher RMS values than -5dB on the track for some reason. The mud comes from the sub bass for some reason I've noticed even though it's a sine with no processing other than a limiter...

I just gotta change the chord sound design I guess. That's the culprit of not getting a loud enough track and it doesn't work with the sub that well.

@Matrix I honestly don't like that name that much, mainly cause it's too long. If you have a strange/different name, I think it should be kept short otherwise no one is going to remember it.

This name might be better:

Spoiler

@Chaos I've seen some of Seamless' videos but I don't even have harmor so it's kinda useless for me haha.

Too bad though, you can almost always tell if someone has used a seamless tutorial to make their sound cause his sounds are so easily recognizable (those sounds made in harmor).

Still muddy? D:

This time I am a tad worried about the distortion of the whole thing, especially at 00:29

Is the track over compressed now btw? I can't tell anymore my ears are dead.
