It’s a undertaking set-up, but iced rapidly degenerates from a dual character study into a romp – the sort of typical galumphing excursion narrative that sprints

through every animated video. After Elsa unintentionally plunges her kingdom into perpetual winter and runs off into the woods, Anna moves after her, which directs to

her gathering – delight have your checklists prepared – a handsome hill man (Jonathan Groff); his adorably anthropomorphic reindeer sidekick; and another, even more

adorable non-human sidekick (a sentient snowman voiced by Broadway celebrity Josh Gad). Meanwhile, back at home, Anna’s ostensibly generous love interest (Santino

Fontana) holds saying and doing things that make him appear too good to be factual – which should make even the smallest members of the assembly very doubtful.

While there’s allotments of converse about true love and melting hearts, the strong feelings not ever rather ignite. It’s hard to develop a sense of warmth when the

plot points all seem so frigidly calculated, and it doesn’t help that the musical figures are so pedestrian. The Little Mermaid may have been embarrassingly retrograde

in periods of its gender politics, but try getting Under the Sea out of your head. Broadway veteran Menzel – she starred in Wicked – deals the heck out of the pieces

of music.

With its gleaming colour palette of greys and whites, iced looks ravishing, and witty sight gags abound (Gad’s snowman verifies amusingly malleable). The film’s craft

is undeniable, and yet it’s not remotely the sort of family classic it’s endeavouring to be; it strikes its brands with precision but not an alarming alallotmentment

of passion.
