I know I know... this subject has been beaten like a dead horse. I thought some of the things said was interesting. This dev released a game on Wiiware called flowerworks. They are now planning on releasing a HD version called flowerworks HD: follies adventure on Wii U and here what was said about the game and Wii U power.

On fowerworks HD

"Flowerworks HD" runs at native 1080p, 60fps on the Wii U.

All textures, sound effects and music are now the original assets, at full quality. And there have been other graphical improvements too, like the in-game grass. So it looks and sounds great, especially on a big TV."

On Wii U hardware:

In general its been very smooth and reasonably simple. Most of the work for us has been creating our new Wii U engine "platform", which is based on the Wii version we already had. Personally, I have found the tools, documentation and processes greatly improved from developing for WiiWare. Testing is much easier, and much faster.

The change in the graphics pipelines (primarily supporting vertex shaders) required the most new code. It didn't fit in too well with the existing Flowerworks engine, as most of the game uses procedural geometry (all created in the game layer, not the engine layer). And vertex shaders are optimised for passing static vertices to the GPU. But we got there in the end, and I'm pretty happy with the results.

I should also mention that the hardware is extremely fast: we had Flowerworks running at full HD, 60fps with literally no time spent optimising any of the game or engine code. Zero.

If we do another title, I'm definitely going to try and squeeze as much as possible out of the hardware and see what we can produce. Flowerworks just doesn't push it at all.

There have been a lot of articles about how the Wii U is "underpowered". The way I see it, is you'll have to create a very specific sort of game for it to not work on the Wii U - especially from a gameplay/design perspective. There have been tens, if not hundreds of thousands of games written in the past - and 99.9% would run and play great on the Wii U. If anything, having access to a touch screen is a lot more important than having extra CPU cores or extra RAM.

Whether companies are interested in properly rewriting or porting games to the Wii U that were designed for completely different architectures ... that is another issue entirely. It has nothing to do with the specs of the Wii U.

So basically the Wii U is fine from a hardware/architecture perspective. Ports are what they are PORTS.... of 360 games from different architecture making Wii U look "underpowered". By no means is this guy game pushing Wii U and he stated that... I just cant wait for developers to stop making excuses and push this system and show what Wii U can really do.

Nobody cares what Indie devs think.
Big publishers brainwash people into buying and believing their unicorn tongue.

Like how sony made people think the p4 is better than a current pc, or how sony can charge an extra $100 in Canada just because of a minor fluctuation int he exchange rate between a country they don't have tax residency in or produce hardware in has fluctuated.

And various other things.
I value the opinions of indies because i love their rich diverse takes on gaming.
I listened back when the first one spoke up at launch, and released trine 2.
Ain't nothing going to change when idiots exist.

Why try to squeeze power form a far more efficient chipset when you can simply throw your main pipeline code into a console and sell $60 games and patch any problems later.

I wish it was viable for these indie games to have physical releases. I'd love to put so many of them on the shelf.I seem to buy more indie games these days than a good majority of hyped scrapheap of the week.

More indie love the better but as for games pushing the system or at least looking mighty impressive. We need Shin'en to show off Fast Racing Neo ASAP.

Their loss. Especially those who constantly sell and re-buy the Wii u so often that the loss on resale is more than if they had kept their original Wii u and considered it a sunk cost.

Not pointing fingers though...

you got a PR job for EA?

No, they'd never admit their practices.
To admit it means your marketing team have a tougher job trying to make people forget.
why waste that money?
It's like when you cancel a game people keep bringing up, you don't just say you cancelled Agent or Guardioansofwhateverthatgameis, you simply say others are working on it.
You never admit to your hype machine being just that. Rule number one.

Next Gen is here!

Actually, it's a Wii port, from WiiWare no less.

Wii U punches well above it's weight. It's a typical console in that regard where over time devs can get more out of it's hardware, the GPU and edram have all been praised by most devs.

I can always appreciate developers who speak freely.  The truth is there is very little business incentive for publishers to invest lots of money to rework the game engines for Wii U, and Wii U wont be included in next gen engine development for two reasons, one being sales of previous games released, and the second being the power chasm between Wii U and X1/PS4.  The power chasm itself woudnt be a deal breaker if software sales were great on the platform, but Ubisoft isnt going to invest a bunch of money into their AC engine for sales of 150-250k, same goes with Activision with COD.  Exclusives wont be held hostage by a lack of power on Wii U.  Mario 3D World looks great, Pikmin 3 looks great, DKC TF looks really nice, and if the Zelda HD demo is any indiciation, the next Zelda is going to be very pleasing to the eyes as well.

The idea that the extra power of the X1 and PS4 is revolutionizing games is crazy, there is nothing on those consoles that couldnt be done on Wii U with some visual compromises.

The reason third parties are staying away from the Wii U has nothing to do with specs, it has everything to do with a lack of profitability from a small install base.
