It's probably because in my lifetime I've probably put over 10000 hrs into Pokemon games.

Situations like that are what get you shinys, I have never caught one when I was actually looking for one, they come when you least suspect it. That's why I always carry a butt load of pole balls, and a Pokemon who knows a move that paralyzes.
