Dual layered is, to put it basically, is when the disc has twice the size on it. Instead of 4.3GB, it's about 7.8 or something. Earlier Wii lasers sometimes have trouble reading these, and therefore makes games freeze. The laser has been recalled for a better one I think.

My Wii is a launch model and has never had any issues with dual-layered discs (or any issues at all, for that matter). I think it was a manufacturing defect, but it most definitely didn't affect everyone who bought a Wii early.
