Cycles is a new render engine for Blender, still in alpha, so I had to download an early build of Blender.

Basically, the previous render engine had direct point lightning, which means it only calculated where the light was going to be.
Cycles on the other hand, calculates how light bounces off the walls, creating a much, MUCH more realistic result with half the work.
